Sony announced Thursday it's recalling 350,000 digital cameras, a point-and-shoot model called the Cyber-shot DSC-T5 released in 2005, because of a problem that could cause metal on the bottom of the camera to cut or scratch the photographer.

"Sony has recently discovered that some DSC-T5 Cyber-shot digital still cameras may experience peeling and warping of the metal coating on the bottom of the camera that could result in a slight cut or scratch to the user's skin," Sony said in an advisory on its Web site.

The Japanese electronics giant will replace the part and pay shipping for free for anyone affected by the problem.

I am so glad that I don't purchase Sony products and have to deal with all the broken and substandard merchandise that they put out. Almost every day there's stories about defective products, exploding batteries and various other things of that nature. Makes a person wonder why Sony still exists.

A product brand is a powerful thing. They made great products for decades and even though much of their stuff is of poor quality today (if not downright dangerous) people still buy it because of the name. They could start selling bags of bird droppings with SONY on the front and Sony fans would buy them.

I'm sure many cheap cameras would do the same, at least Sony recalls them.

For a small company, okay maybe you can't afford beta testers so everybody tests and there's no real quality control, but at sony... what's the problem?

You can't really test a product during 2 years before release it to market right?

I know, but in 2007, it's easy to know which materials are solid and which aren't. There has been enough tests in the past. Oh well, I just thought that it sucked once again for Sony, I don't want them to shut the doors because of all these recalls and their losses on the PS3.

Has there been any other case of a camera having sharp edges posing a hazard? I don't recall any.

Sony always had made the claim to having "cutting-edge technology" I guess this proves just that.

Thank god -- we don't want 350,000 bleeding people.
