A new study by internet monitoring firm Netcraft has revealed that Apache, a popular open-source HTTP server, has now dropped to below 50% of the market. Out of 127,961,479 websites looked at, the sruvey found that Apache was on 48.42% of web servers, with Microsoft taking second place at 36.21%. This marks a dramatic decline from a survey taken in November, 2005, when Apache was on 71 per cent of web servers while Microsoft struggled to make 20 per cent. In a statement, Netcraft noted that "Apache's lead remains substantial in both categories. It's worth noting that Apache has lost market share to another open source server, lighttpd (1.2 per cent of all sites), and Google (4.4 per cent) as well as Windows. But if Microsoft continues to gain share at its current pace, it could close the gap on Apache sometime in 2008." Finally, it's also worth noting that the Google server uses Apache software.

Should I guess 'Google' refers to the domains G hosts under the Google-apps-for-your-domain banner?

I'm not sure, but my guess would be that it means pages that are hosted on googlepages.com. If you have an Google account you can create your own web pages at http://pages.google.com. It might be those.

Who cares. People use what they want.

And if you looked at another 127,961,479 servers, you might get a completely different set of numbers. The internet is a big place, you know.

You might, but it's doubtful as long as the study was done right. As long as you get a fair sample of data, the numbers should be fairly accurate.

If you doubt their research methodogy, you can always read their entire white paper. It'll tell you how they did it.

Sorry, but what is a Appache or a Windows Webserver in this statistic?
I setup the IIS from windows (XP Pro or Vista), put some pictures in a folder, setup an DynDns service in my router, and give my friends the link to it? Is this a windows WebServer in this statistic?

I did a quick look on Netcraft's site, and found some documented methodologies.
