Microsoft Corp. has quietly released pre-beta code to two forthcoming Windows service packs to testers in the past week, but the company continues to remain vague about when the final code for Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Windows Vista SP1 will make it to end users. Microsoft confirmed Tuesday that it released preview code for both XP SP3, but still would not say directly when the updates to each OS will be released in their final versions.

While Microsoft said it will have a beta of Vista SP1 available "sometime this year," it won't commit to a more firm date or speculate when the final release will be available. Some insiders had expected a beta to be available by now, though one has yet to materialize. As for Windows XP SP3, Microsoft said it is shooting for the first half of next year, but called that date "preliminary" and declined to disclose more details

I want to try Vista SP1 as performance is currently pretty poor - I preordered Vista Ultimate OEM and yet I've been back on XP since about mid-March. Even browsing folders in Vista is noticeably slower than XP.

Vista SP1 is an .iso only. It can only be installed as a clean install. It is not a patch.

So, uh... what's the point!? Is the final version going to be a patch?

The point is, this is about the current leak of Vista SP1, not RTM. The build is available in .iso only and is 3.07 GB in size for x86. If someone posts info about an .exe file, it is not the real build.

It says in the article that the SP1 beta will be released later this year, so I can't imagine it is anything other than fake.

way for both of you two read.

MS released a PREVIEW.

It's real, it's pre-beta, and it's NOT FAKE. It is just NOT FINAL.

What nemo says

As posted in post 1, the Vista SP1 is an .iso. It can only be installed as a clean install. SP1 is not a patch, it has been slipstreamed into Vista RTM. So if you have a spare PC, then try it out.

I read the article and it mentioned pre-beta code but never mentioned whether it was in an installable format. Also, there have been plenty of fake SP1 builds floating around torrent sites so I assumed the download was fake. I might have misinterpreted it but I have no problem with reading thank you very much.

Why? The SP is mainly all the patches you can get already all you are doing is putting yourself at risk for unchecked patches not working

That is incorrect. There are over 200 Hotfixes that have not been released to Update or the Download Center. You can only get them from MS Support. The purpose of a Service Pack Beta is to make sure all of the Hotfixes work together as a whole.

Here is a story from Bink.nu that explains XP SP3. When SP3 is installed 2848 files are updated.

they are the performance and reliability packs, not service packs.

The "Performance and reliability packs" are not the leaked sp1 btw. Don't get it confused.

they aren't leaked but they are available for download from Microsoft. It's been talked about too already:

Enjoy.

Will the Final builds of the service packs be iso's as well or available as patches? Is this just to make it more difficult to be leaked and used before the final builds are available?

Thanks if anyone can let me know
