AOL drops free Kaspersky anti-virus, offers McAfee

AOL has quietly stopped offering its free Active Virus Shield software in favor of a competing alternative from vendor McAfee. The free anti-virus software, based on technology from Kaspersky Lab, had been available for the past year on AOL's Activevirusshield.com Web site, but it apparently was pulled some time in the past week.

AOL's free AV product is now McAfee VirusScan Plus, which was introduced last month as part of a new AOL portal, called AOL Internet Security Central. AOL also offers Internet filtering software for parents, as well as identity theft protection and pop-up blockers, through the portal.

It would be neat if someone could post some official reason behind this.

AOL dropped what was supposedly a good product by a good company.

In its place, they now have a questionable product from a company that has preyed on the ignorant and that is hated by many (much like AOL itself).

I know there is a lot of AOL-hate, but this change will only bring more unless someone can explain the reasoning behind this switch.

Agreed. There is only one reason AOL would do this, McAfee offered a much cheaper price. I wouldn't be surprised, given McAfee's terrible reputation and (hopefully) dwindling sales, if McAfee didn't dump their junkware for free to AOL. And AOL, not really caring about any of their subscribers safety at all, decided to sell out their entire user base for probably what amounts to a penny on every dollar. Sigh.

Exactly.

Wasn't this posted like a month ago in BPN?

well, well, well, it seems that AOL dropped a decent AV for complete crap..... GO AOL!!!! (then again AOL is more fluff than any other app out, with the exception of vista ultimate)

This was already posted...

Wow, even at rock bottom AOL just keeps lowering the bar. What are they gonna do next, mail out CDs with free trial offers?

Oh wait.....
#7 phiberoptik on 09 Aug 2007 - 14:44
Isn't that how it works... get them hooked on the good rock first, then after they are hooked, substitute it for some non-pure bloated crap?

Well, if you're dumb enough to be an AOHell customer at all, you deserve whatever you get from them.

Shut up you ignorant nerd. How the hell can you call someone stupid for choosing a certain ISP over another. For all you know someone else set it up for them.

Not everyone can be a super computer genius like you man.

Name calling is not the best way to prove a point. I've been on this site for over a year now, and I'll tell ya Croquant is not ignorant. Sometimes our opinions differ, but in this case, I do agree that if you're going to use AOL as an ISP, you get what you're asking for. Even my friends with little or no computer knowledge don't use AOL because they hear what people are saying about them (AOL). Just my two cents.

In this case name calling couldn't be more appropriate.

Why?
#10 MchWalte on 09 Aug 2007 - 18:04
Like I said in the other thread. They have always offered McAfee. I can just about guarantee it had to do with contracts.
#11 +Digix on 09 Aug 2007 - 21:32
it seems updates are still coming through for it so hopefully sticks that way until i can find another cheap or free kaspersky based scanner or buy kaspersky
#12 Enrickey on 09 Aug 2007 - 21:36
I downloaded it for my parents just last week. Hopefully it will still be good for another year.
#13 kyrio on 10 Aug 2007 - 07:02
Kaspersky is the number one AV software out there and has been number through all of the tests it's been put through.

Obviously this is a move by AOL to make more money (the same way most ISPs are offering that trash for free now).

Not that I really care, but... bad move AOL... bad move.
#14.1 PGHammer on 11 Aug 2007 - 13:04
AOL's move is *entirely* contract-related (in case some of you don't realize it, and it's likely you haven't, the default IS/AV products offered with AOL software have been from McAfee since AOL 7; this did not change through AOL 8 and 9, including AOL 9.x VR). And while Kapersky is number 1 among the tech crowd, they for some reason don't do well with corporate customers or ISPs (the leaders in those areas are Symantec, Microsoft and, get this, *McAfee*). So you tell us why Kapersky commits such suckage among the suit-and-tie crowd.
