Intel plans to launch five 45nm notebook processors (Penryn) to go along with its Santa Rosa Refresh platform in the first quarter of 2008. These will be followed by another six for Montevina in the second quarter, according to sources at motherboard makers.

You're right, I never expected to see 3MB, Either 4MB or 6MB. But maybe what they're doing is a newer version of the shared L2 idea? 1MB per core and then 1MB shared between the two?

I doubt you'll be seeing any quad cores for laptops anytime soon. If they addressed the heat issues, there would still be issues relating to the power usage.
Personally, apart from fanboys, no one really gains out of using a quad core - other than niche/specialised scenario's.
