Germany: Criminal Investigation of YouTube For Nazi Videos

The Central Council of Jews in Germany wants the government to begin a criminal investigation into Google and YouTube for airing neo-Nazi and Nazi videos they claim violate Germany's strict laws against inciting hatred toward minorities. Salomon Korn, VP of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, called for an investigation of YouTube for allegedly allowing the spread of anti-Semitic propaganda. They include World War II Nazi propaganda clips, as well as recent clips from neo-Nazi groups active in Germany. German journalists said one of the YouTube-aired clips was viewed more than 400,000 times in eight months, despite pleas from several German groups to take it down.

German leaders and citizens are struggling with their nation's image and how to eliminate hate groups. The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights has published its "Report on Racism and Xenophobia in the Member States of the E.U.," which indicates a 14% increase in the amount of racist violence and crime in Germany from 2005 to 2006, when groups reported 18,142 such incidents. The report cautioned that the increase in violent incidents could be attributed to better reporting. Either way, the recent incidents are front-page news in a nation still trying to improve its democracy and image nearly 75 years after Hitler took power.

So, no freedom of speech? I don't advocate or condone these racist pricks, but... don't you think it's better that these kind of people come out in the light, so we know who they are, instead of them being in the shadows?

i can understand banning neo-nazism, even freedom of speech has some boundaries i think. But why bann nazi video's from world war II. You can't erase history, use it, learn from it...

+1... couldnt agree more
for educational purposes such material is worth gold...

anyways, the news may be a bit missleading, i dont think that germany has to improve its democracy more than just about every other country...
come over, have a short look into our system and see that germany is quite one of the most democratic countries...
anyways, yea, were still struggling with the image, however, i can proudly say that the FIFA world cup last year really helped us showing were generally a peaceful country, no more bad than very most of the rest of the world

Geez, they might as well ban the History Channel as half of its content seems to be based on WWII.

So, that's two egg mayonnaise, a prawn Goebbels, a Hermann Goering, and four Colditz salads.

They should learn from the past and be open with information, not try to restrict it. This is a ridiculous move that doesn't help anyone.

were not talking about historical media like WW2 propaganda, but actually and especially about neo-nazi propaganda (in case you dont know, that means temporary propaganda for nazis) which is best treated with banning
not restricting it would be like some nazis could open a tv station and broadcast neo-nazi propaganda 24/7... mmmh... yummy.... NOT
IMO that stuff has no right to exist, appart from the historical stuff, which better be watched for educational purposes only...

Glassed Silver is right, because neo-Nazism is hateful propaganda which is going on today. The word Neo means new and, in this case does not refer to historical propaganda, but with what is going on right now.

I am surprised at the openness of wanting hateful crap being on the Internet.

remove the neo-Nazi stuff and prosecute them to the fullest of the law, leave the historical stuff

Yes, but where do you draw the line? It is far more worthwhile to just educate the masses rather than try to cover up anything that is disagreeable. Prohibition didn't help in America, in fact it made things worse - I don't see this as any different. Anything that preaches attacks or abuse against a minority should be banned and those items should be flagged to YouTube on an individual basis (not as a unified action by a Jewish group) but it seems that anti-Semitism is treated as more serious that other forms of discrimination and that is wrong.

Propaganda is put out by all sides, like the current Western trend to discredit Chinese products or the so-called WMDs that triggered the Iraq war - Germany's policy of taking anti-Semitic behaviour so much more seriously is, imho, a mistake. I'm not supporting their viewpoint but you'll never eliminate bigots - restricting them only makes it that much more appealing and gives them a new angle: the Jew's are restricting the media. That is a view that is expressed a lot and only given more creedence by actions like this.

Right, because it couldn't have anything to do with the lead-based paint on children's toys, or the antifreeze in the toothpaste. It's just propaganda.

Just something before I go to bed...
Actually Germany pretty much does almost everything possible to improve its image.
Although, just like with a radio station: you can say stuff and convince people, but just the ones listening!
What Im trying to say is that Germany has a lot of good stuff to offer and were the leading export country (oh yes, count japan and china, too) and very very most of the Germans respect foreigners or other people that would be a target for nazis.
Its the un- or missinformed or ignorant people that still think germany is what it used to be or just "slightly" better.

this is just stupid. Like erasing a video from a site will erase the history. I wonder from where is the "genious" with such idea
