Microsoft today released to the Web (RTW) Silverlight™ 1.0, a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering richer user experiences on the Web. In addition, Microsoft will work with Novell Inc. to deliver Silverlight support for Linux, called Moonlight, and based on the project started on mono-project.com.
Silverlight significantly reduces development and deployment costs and provides enhanced Web audio and video streaming and playback using industry-leading Windows Media® Technologies. Microsoft unveiled new Silverlight customer experiences on “Entertainment Tonight,” HSN and World Wrestling Entertainment, and also launched the Silverlight Partner Initiative, a program designed to foster collaboration among solution providers, content delivery networks, tools vendors and design agencies.
“Our expectations for compelling, immersive experiences on the Web are increasing daily,” said Ray Ozzie, Microsoft’s chief software architect. “With today’s release of Silverlight 1.0, we’re making it possible for developers and designers to deliver to individuals the kind of high-def experiences they crave by integrating data and services in rich and unique ways. Silverlight will further accelerate the growth in rich interactive applications by giving developers and designers new options for delivering great experiences that span the Web, PC, phone and other devices.”

Silverlight is however better off in that area, with both cross-browser and platform support either there, or planned.
wtf?
I updated wikipedia too!
And where does this link link to?
No Problems with FF 2.0.0.6
Gee, what a surprise. Someone who is bashing Microsoft.
Works fine for me in both browsers. How about actually testing something out before bashing it?
Dear god *shakes head* it is Microsofts competitor to Flash and JavaFX.
Another way of looking at it: Take an applet, then take Flash, mush the superior graphics with the superior programming.
When I visit the download page I get "Thank you for installing Microsoft Silverlight 1.0 Release Candidate", but I am sure I had installed a previous version and not this RC1.
EDIT: Found it, rightclick on a Silverlight site schow me "Microsoft Silverlight Version: 1.0.20816.0", is this number correct?

Its taken years for Flash to spread and mature. Just leave it alone.
Why does Microsoft have to take a good idea, ruin it and then make it Windows only (for dev at least) and if its anything like WMP for osx then while it may run a little it will most of the time mess up, be unsupported and always a little behind its competitors.
Fixed
Please tell me why expanding secure, core components of they .NET framework to the web, thereby increasing functionality, is 'ruining' something.
Have you even tried silverlight, Igenerally hate flash and flash like things and their use in webpage, But silverlight it grew on me right away, sure I still don't think it should be overused like on all flash sites. But it's an incredibly powerful tool to expand on websites and make some awesome stuff. Flash s like a badly made toy compared to silverligh. I've seen silverlight load complex applications with detailed vector animaton far faster than you can load a simple non animated flash image.
And if you're going to go by need, there's a great any things peopel don't need but damn we'd hate to be without them, Cars, cell phones, computers, internet...
Stop being an anti microsoft fanboy and critisize things for real reasons and use your brain, not the anti MS herd brain.

Can you give some examples to back up anything you've said? I've only seen a few 3D Silverlight apps and they all paled in comparison to Papervision (by far). At this point, it seems that AS3 is much more adept at handling these complex vectors you speak of than Silverlight is.

Don't blame the underlying tech for its use. I'm sure the same will happen to Silverlight if it becomes common enough. The number of idiots using a technology is proportional to the total number of users using it.
