Microsoft will release five sets of security patches next Tuesday, including a critical update for users of Windows 2000, the company said Thursday. With the remaining four security updates rated as "important" by Microsoft, this latest round of patches appears to be less worrisome than the August updates. Last month, Microsoft released nine updates, six of which were rated critical.

Microsoft rates its bug-fixes as critical when attackers can exploit the flaws without requiring any user action. Also set to be patched this month are Visual Studio, Windows Services for Unix, SharePoint Services, and the Windows Live and MSN Messenger software.

<snipped> it's a good thing that microsoft still makes the effort to patch an 8 (not 7) years old OS

I thought win 2000 came out in 2004

I think they have a policy to keep bringing out security updates for up to 8 years after a product has been discontinued.

Ya know, I am a Mac user now, but Windows 2000 was a great OS. It was the last streamlined windows release before they started stuffing everything under the sun into it. Glad they still release critical patches for it.

To the first poster, as many patches as my Ubuntu 6.06 LT distro has needed for the past couple of years. Get over it. Code is just way too complex to figure out all the bad reactions, and will always have bugs. If you cannot understand this, it's time to get out of the computer business and take up a hobby like fishing off the dock for boots.

To the OP... You realize I still get some Windows 2000 PC every year. We have production applications, that drive machinery that costs more money than you will ever see, that are not certified for anything over Windows 2000. The real world does more on computers than surf the internet and write papers for school.

Heck, at my last job, I still had 2 NT boxes on the floor.
