Shift Linux is a project that was created by the Neowin community. Shift is Debian based, therefore it has access to all of the software and applications as other Debian distributions. Neowin's Shift Linux is designed to give the user an experience of being part of the Neowin community as well as having a simple, easy-to-use Live CD that can be installed to your hard drive, if you enjoy the way our distribution works. Shift is a free, GPL-based Linux distribution that can be freely distributed or modified. There are no restrictions with Shift.

Shift Linux 0.5 (RC-2) includes three fully branded versions: KDE, Gnome, and Flux, all Live CDs. Included in this version are most of the most popular packages to include wireless support and a desktop installer. In addition, we have newly created packages such as:
  1. k3b (All Versions)
  2. Rhythmbox (All versions)
  3. Bluetooth Support (All versions)
  4. HP Printer Drivers (All versions)
  5. Power management and laptop detection (All versions)
  6. NTFS Read/Write support (All versions)
  7. Envy (All versions)
  8. New branding!
  9. Extremely fast...You'll forget it's a CD in 5 minutes.
Feel free to download and try our newest release. It has been designed for increased loading speeds. Please post any bugs found in our Bug Tracker.

This is by far the best effort yet. I hope you enjoy our efforts. The final release is scheduled for the 10th of November.

#2.1 Barney on 09 Sep 2007 - 14:40

Thanks man! If you include it, I will replace my current vm with Shift.
#2.3 Jugalator on 10 Sep 2007 - 08:22
I'm not right now planning to use this (or another Linux distro), but Mono would at least seem pretty suitable in theme for a distro by Neowin.
(1 reply) #3 Epsilon on 09 Sep 2007 - 14:34
Shouldn't take long to install it in a virtualbox and check it out
But I'm gonna stick with debian as I don't have to reinstall everytime theres a new dot release.
Oh btw Leo you seem more sensible on this board than the other one
#3.1 Leo Natan on 09 Sep 2007 - 16:32
Epsilon?

Well, what can I say, I've opened toward Linux in the last couple of weeks.

#4.1 WAR-DOG on 09 Sep 2007 - 17:23
I think they will use torrents in the final release

First of all congrats on the work. Does this really have to be listed on the FrontPage though? No offense but I could care less about it and its the 5th times its been listed as fpn in the past couple of weeks. I know you want people to know about it but its been listed a ton already. My two cents. Or is there a way in Neowin for me to disable these types of posts?

Peace,
RA

This is a new release and is a huge accomplishment of many in our community. Many here are really proud of this feat. In addition, our release news is seen by lots of Linux sites all over the world.

This is not the 5th time we've had an announcement on the front page. I suggest that if you do not like the post, do not read it.

Jeez dude, cool it.

It's great Neowin has its own Linux distro and they can post about as much as they want. Don't want to read it, then don't. Just move your eyes higher or lower.
#5.3 +Rich on 09 Sep 2007 - 18:05
Well said Barney.

As this was made by Neowin, then it is up to the Neowin staff to post about it as much as they like. It also helps them to grow larger as a community, because people who use the OS will then pass on news to others who will then use it> Then these people will stop and think, "Hey, this Neowin site ROXORZ!", and subsiquantly come and join the community here.

As two other people have said... if you dont like the post, then ignore it... simple realy.

I appreciate its a "new release and huge accomplishment" [sic] however its pretty tough not to read it. Its basically in Neowin pink and takes up half the front page on my screen. I don't know how many times its been up there but its definitely been more than a couple and more than i would care to read. I don't get how linux sites all over the world would go to Neowin for release news. It would be great if neowin had some preferences I could set so I wouldn't have to look at it. That way everyone wins! Of course Neowin can post whatever they like no one said otherwise. Just a suggestion, take it or leave it no need to get all agitated.

Well you can set your page to go to software news instead of the main news.

You can set your homepage to www.google.com instead of Neowin.

You can frequent other news sites such as Bink.nu if it bothers you that much... that is until they start posting things you feel you no longer wish to read.

Whilst the rest of the Neowin community will happily sit here, reading news on Shift Linux and waiting anxiously for the next release or update.

Honestly, its like going to the MS website every day and then one day telling them you would rather not hear about the latest patches for MS Windows and would much rather hear only about Office.

You obviously have something against Neowin, as you have gone out of your way to highlight the win, much the same as people use the $ sign in MS(M$. Therefore i vote that you are most likely here to try and steer people away from the site, because you dont agree with it.
#5.6 fugazi26 on 09 Sep 2007 - 19:29
Shift Linux is a Neowin based community project therefore news on Shift Linux is posted on Neowin.

I think he was stressing the fact that Neowin started out as a Windows based site and for the most part remains as such. However, the Linux side is growing and this distro is proof.
#5.8 Slimy on 10 Sep 2007 - 00:19
Just use the headline view and it takes up very little space: http://www.neowin.net/index.php?view=headlines
#5.9 redavenger on 10 Sep 2007 - 14:38
Thats awesome fugazi I understand its a neowin project but it doesn't make any sense that the vast majority of linux users come to Neowin's homepage to find out about shift linux. Do you honestly think that makes any sense? I bolded the win in Neowin to point out the irony in that Neowin was a site that Linux people flock to. By and large I love neowin and thats the only reason I am speaking up. I don't want this place to go down the toilet like slashdot has and if the digg ms haters have their way that site as well. All I wanted was an option to take out some of the noise from the site. I highly doubt the majority of Neowin even cares about Shift Linux or Linux period. Your replys prove the point that the linux zealots can't take any criticism, and is also the reason why I would rather cut those people out from whom I read.

Peace,
RA

Honestly, I'm glad it was posted more than once. Today was the first time that I have ever seen it advertised. I don't get here often, but when I do, it's good stuff.

#5.11 spikey_richie on 19 Sep 2007 - 16:50
You could always use AdBlock in FF and block it...
#5.12 Gergith on 01 Nov 2007 - 04:17
Hey, I understand your complaints 100%, and I do agree to an extent...

But by your thoughts.. How would Microsoft advritise office for mac? it doesnt run on windows, and thats what microsoft is all about.

this is a linux distro made by ALOT of windows users learning linux. so this will have alot of the requirements windows users want because of this.. making it in its own way unique.

to have its own website would seperate that project from the community. (the way autopatcher was a bit more seperate)

Don't worry, I dont want to gang up on you. I think your best bet is using firefox as suggested, and extension for adblocking.. it works perfectly, its how i remove all ads and unwanted content.

and heres a question. Would it bother you as much if this was posted MORE times but not stickied? :p would that be better or worse in your mind (curious earnestly)
#6 Kreuger on 09 Sep 2007 - 18:32
Flux screenshots here for those who are curious. There is also a shot of KDE and Gnome in the forum discussion.

Edit: 2 more shots added! If anyone wants to see anything in particular, just ask.

whats the diff between Flux and Gnome? I'm a linux noob, i've only worked with ubuntu. So guide me a bit please!
#7.1 Barney on 09 Sep 2007 - 20:58
These are simply different desktop managers. Ubuntu uses Gnome as a desktop manager, so that it what you are probably used to. Fluxbox is a less resource - intense desktop manager and is really for computers that have limited resources (older CPUs and less RAM)... although many people like to use Flux anyway... it just is more responsive, in most cases.

It is all in your preference.
#7.2 sibot on 10 Sep 2007 - 03:18
Ah..more like xubuntu...Thanks! I'll surely give Shift Linux a try! Is this the final release? I am running on a very slow connection i.e. 256kbps, I really need to give it a good thought before i download something more than 20 mb ! But all in all, Great work guys! NeoWin has its own Distro!! AWESOME

Note quite like Xubuntu. That's more or less a light weight gnome and Fluxbox is totally better IMO

I reolize that what makes linux linux is all the distros, but I think the only way its ever gonnna have a chance of competing with windows is to have one Linux OS
#10.1 buletov on 10 Sep 2007 - 09:27

I like Linux being my Linux. It contains only what I want. It works the way I want. I don't care if it "competes" with Windows. I don't care if it has a 7 percentage point marketshare gain year-over-year against Windows. I leave those concerns to the corporate people.

And I sure as heck don't want to be forced to use the "one Linux" as The Only Linux. Which UIs do we get rid of? Kill Gnome? Stop KDE development?

The "One Linux" strategy may seem like a good idea to some (on the surface, anyhow), but an artificial determination of what is "best" is really subjective and impractical to implement.

So Linux can just be another version of Windows with it's one size fits all ideas...

I'm not trying to criticise, but most people don't care if Linux competes with Windows. Hating Windows/MS is not a good reason to use Linux imo. Liking Linux (and it's open source culture) is a reason to use Linux.
#10.4 Gergith on 01 Nov 2007 - 04:19
uh.. I believe your asking for ubuntu :p
besides.. we DONT have 1 distro of windows

we dont even have 1 distro of xp.. or 1 of vista :p

there are different version of the same os, then different os's also sold :p
xp home doesnt work ENTIRELY like pro and is different again then say 2003 server etc etc...
(1 reply) #11 PureLegend on 10 Sep 2007 - 18:23
Good work. I think I might keep my eyes on this as a new distro to use
#11.1 cork1958 on 11 Sep 2007 - 03:09
Yep,
Same thing here. Just waiting for that final release to try that Fluxbox on this old a** raggedy box!
#12 RuudJacobs.NET on 15 Sep 2007 - 16:33
I'm going to try this right now!

Edit:
Moved my question to here:
Oops! Screwed that up. Now I can't find where I moved my post to and I had subscribed to that thread. That's not showing up in my control panel either. Just subscribed to it a few minutes ago. Part of why my vote on the front page was neowin still needs work!!

FWIW,
I have now tried Shift on 3 different machines. WILL NOT even get to the desktop on any of them!! All 3 have different setups using internal video, ati video, and nvidia video. All 3 are different processors too. One Inel Celeron. One Intel P4, and one AMD Athlon 3000!! Don't know why I have to be so stubborn and not just give up forever with this goofy OS (Linux in general, that is). Just hate having things kick my butt!!

What is the support like for graphics drivers on this OS?

I've unsuccessfully tried to use Suse and Ubuntu on my laptop, but without graphics drivers it's unusable..and with the graphics drivers supplied by Via Chrome I don't have a GUI at all!
#16 RedFlow on 02 Nov 2007 - 20:07
This looks very interesting I may try this out later on!
