There's no question the channel is eager to get its hands on Advanced Micro Devices' first quad-core x86 microprocessor. Monday's belated launch of the long-awaited server chip code-named Barcelona finally brings to market the "game-changing" technology AMD is promising with what it calls the "world's most advanced x86 processor ever designed and manufactured."

System builders who received samples a week or two ahead of today's worldwide launch say they aren't ready to issue benchmarks just yet. Nevertheless, sources tell ChannelWeb that the processor AMD calls "the first native quad-core" is faster than they had anticipated. They say three key advances are testing out as advertised -- a tri-level memory cache hierarchy with fully shared L3 cache for all four cores, a floating point unit with 2x128-bit loads/cycle, and independent power supplies for each of the processor's four cores and to the memory controller. The last feature distinguishes AMD's quad-core product from Intel's, in that it's possible to idle one, two or three CPU cores for a workload to better manage power consumption.

Disappointing. It is 15% faster than the X2's but still trails the Intels

Let's see how disappointed you are in a few months when AMD is kicking Intel's ass all over the place.

...I hope.

Who cares about who kicking who - until AMD get their act together in regards to graphics cards; AMD is completely off my shopping list. Intel all the way unfortunately. I'd like to see competition but AMD deliberately makes itself unavailable by virtue of their enept support for alternative operating systems.

Yeah, I suspect that will be about the time that Matrox takes the 3D crown from nvidia and ATI.

Except for the fact that Intel used to be on the top int he early days, then AMD had the best performing processors way back, but suffered form the weak Ali and Via chipsets, then intel took back the throne, then AMD and Intel was pretty much equal witht he slightly hot thunderbirds(withs lots of snide comments from intel users who made fun of the hot CPU, wich only made it more fun when intel sfollowed up with a processor even hotter than the TB...) and AMD on top lately with the XP/X2 setries, before intel took the crown with Core 2 series.

YEah there isn't a change that this oh so stable market won't fluctuate and intel will forever stay on top, cause Intel is "teh win" huh ?

QFT. A lot of people seem to forget the "old days" when AMD was the CPU of choice for gaming. Even their 486 DX4's were faster than Pentium 75's.

this processor is a power hungry electricity system, 4 independents processors with 4 fans, you need a 600 watts PSU

...Quad Core, my dear fellow, Quad Core. Same TDP as the Dual Core Opterons.

In any case, just wait till Phenom hits. I'm pretty certain the TDP of those processors are far more acceptable.

Sure, except for the problem that even though AMD have a chance in the Server market against Intel with Barcelona, Intel will easily continue to be the desktop leader.

Phenom Preview available at:

"If we are to believe that 15% is the best we'll get on average, taking into account that Penryn is around 5% faster than Conroe, the updated architecture from AMD alone isn't enough to really compete with Intel."

Not to mention the huge clock speed advantage Intel will have as well.

I really do hope you get a warning. You're the same <snipped> in the other barcelona post trying to start a flamewar.

I am not starting a flamewar, you missundertood, I am expressing my opinion about this processor, think before you post

Enough with the spin, people. Show me some benchmarks.
Numbers don't lie.

Congratulation for AMD ....! ...I will continue to use AMD processors . I've built a lot of INTEL based systems....not bad at all.
But in terms of quality-price equation AMD surpases INTEL products...Anyway I will await for the AMD " Bulldozer "...!!!!...few months more...!

AMD dont seem to like me, I have had a P3m laptop for years no problems with it, got myself a amd64 something or other and its giving me grief left right and centre lol.

Well its just a stop gap while i get the funds for another intel then the kids can have this amd.
