- Sounds like a FUD piece to me. In a country where the state doesn't like the internet and wants to discourage people from using it, you have to be suspicious when the state-controlled media reports that the internet killed someone.

- Good, he deserved to die.. If your going to sit in front of a computer for 3 days straight and try to prove some point?... then you deserve what you get.
And before I get flamed.... think about this... these people are the same people that are driving a car next to you while you go down the road... If he didn't die this way, he probably would have fell asleep at the wheel trying to prove another point, and killed an entire family..
yea I know.. I'm heartless... but it's for the greater good... -
#3.1 Posted by carmatic on 17 Sep 2007 - 14:33
- what if he doesnt drive anyway? might he have walked under a ladder 'to prove a point' , tripped, pushed the ladder onto some overhead electrical cables, bringing it down onto a street and electrocuting everyone and setting fire to everything? i shouldnt have to say this, but anytime someone dies its a bad thing...
anyway, where did it say anything about the government forcing online games to 'dock the points' for people who stayed on too long?

- Get a heart, no-one deserves to die for doing what he was doing. What makes you think he was trying to prove a point anyway?

What makes you think he was trying to prove a point anyway?well your point is obviously wrong, someone who is killing tons of people would deserve to die. but thats not the point, the point is this guy was an idiot, and he was doing something which could lead to death, and he died (and it wasn't some noble cause or anything, he was playing a game presumably)... so he deserved it.

- I don't think he deserved it, but it is his own fault. It's like that contest where people chugged a whole ton of water; you got to be an idiot to do that. Doesn't mean they deserve it though..
Unless he was: a rapist, child molester/pedophile, murderer, drug lord, wife/child beater, racist, RIAA, terrorist, gang member, thief...(to be continued) -

There ARE people who deserve to die. Are you saying Sadam Hussein didn't deserve to die? Does that mean that if I went out and killed 100 people, I would deserve to die?
Sorry, I know those are some harsh examples, but that comment just made me think "what the heck is he thinking." -

Umm.. there are, but they are very exceptional cases. Whatever, you don't kill them when they disagree with you. You make them believe you, then kill them. You don't want to create martyrs when people die.
That was OT... back on topic...
Surprising he wasn't kicked off by the e-cafe staff... as long as he was drinking their products I suppose they didn't mind.

- While I won't rule out the chance that this guy was playing some grind-fest MMORPG for three days straight, where in the article does it say he was playing a game?
-
#4.2 Posted by JiveMasterT on 17 Sep 2007 - 15:22
- It doesn't say he was playing a game, but it was somewhat implied where the say "China's government has taken steps to combat the problem, including forcing online gaming sites to dock the points of gamers who stay online too long."
Either way, I think it's stupid that this stuff even makes the news because it's not the first time it has happened in China and it certainly won't be the last.

- Excuse me, FORCING gaming sites to do their bidding? WHO THE **** DOES THIS COUNTRY THINK IT IS?? As if Magic Lantern and Echelon weren't bad enough, now this!!??
Microsoft needs to grow balls, annihilate Magic Lantern and Echelon from cyberspace, and then deal with China's anti-internet policy!!! They have the power - it's about time it was put to use!!! -

I would imagine that they think they're a oppressive communist country. Oh, wait, they are.

- Didn't they have a story last year about someone dieing after playing a MMORPG in China? To me this all seems like political BS they are trying to spread to have a reason to censory and control peoples usage of the internet.... we never hear of this in other countries, and if it does happen its not that huge of a deal obviously, so why is China blowing it wahy out of proprotion? this is the same country that wants to force people that use the net too much to go to "thearpy" to get their "problem" fixed

- Yep, they did have a story a while ago on a guy in an internet cafe dieing because he was playing a game to long. Why does this happen so much in China?

Two people out of 1.3 billion die from the same cause (within what, a year?), and you're instant response is "why does this happen so much?"
:p

- You guys are wrong. The media and internet show pictures and share stories like China is just **** poor and corrupt.
If you've ever been there it's a completely different story. Don't believe everything you read. -

- You're kidding right? 1.3billion people of which 1 billion live in third world conditions. Its well known that China is one of the worst countries ever in terms of human rights. Why dont you know this?
Read and learn :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Rights_in_China
This is widely known stuff and it never ceases to amaze me that some just refuse to see it. If you dont like that source there are about a thousand others that back all that up.
Oh and one other thing..what we are saying in this thread is exactly why China is locking down the internet as much as they can. This is what opressive governments do. Keeping information out of the hands of its people is job #1. Stupid ass scare stories such as this is just one of the tactics. They dont care what we think or know because our conversation will never get into the hands of the populous if they can help it.

Give me a break, it never ceases to amaze me that some just always try to establish connections of every single event happened in China to criticizing its human-right condition.
Come on, if the news reports some guy were dead after 10 min use of internet, yes, that's "control by fear" to stop people using Internet. But died after 3 uninterrupted days of using computer/internet (probably without much sleep)? use common sense, please, it must affect a person's normal biological status in some degrees. And a suddenly death is a possible result. So, at most this news is probably trying to scare people from using computer for a really long time without break. I don't mind my government to give its citizens a warning like this.

- What could you possibly do on the internet for three solid days?
A thirty-year-old as well - What kind of life did this person have to find himself stuck in an internet cafe for three days?
I always thought China was a bit iffy. >.>

The paper did not provide the man's name or the online activities he was engaged in. Worried about growing Internet addiction, China's government has taken steps to combat the problem, including forcing online gaming sites to dock the points of gamers who stay online too long.
