Turkey blocks YouTube...Again

It seems as if today is the day of the repeat story: a court in Turkey has banned access to YouTube after a single citizen complained that it contained clips which insulted the country. The ruling was based on allegations that material posted on the video sharing website mocked the country's modern founder, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, along with the national army, president Abdullah Gul and prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Consequently, the Turkish Telecommunications Board has been told to block all access to YouTube. Previously, Turkey had blocked access to YouTube in March this year after it hosted a video showing pictures of Ataturk with insults superimposed in English. The country's penal code makes it a crime to insult 'Turkishness' and the courts routinely press charges against writers and journalists for mentioning the Armenian genocide of 1915-1917. Thus, this ruling comes as no great surprise.

And they want to join the EU with these types of laws? How about joining the civilized world first by admitting to crimes such as genocide...

The way the EU run, they'll be in like a shot with their attitude. Basicly, anyone who thinks the EU is a good thing is an idiot.

Don't feel too bad, it's not too different here in America, or many other places in the world. Nothing is in the best interest of the people; just the ones sitting on top.

how can you blame a country for a genocide that happened (if it even did happen) when the Turkish Republic wasn't even established yet?

Right, and Germany wasn't responsible for the crimes against Jews because the Federal Republic of Germany didn't exist then ...

They don't blame a country, they blame the people ... the Germans, the Turks ...

For what reasons? Do you live in the EU? Which country?

EU law would require Turkey to be a lot more free before getting in, but I don't think this would change - France and Germany block things (Germany being quite obvious), the Eastern bloc probably is less free than them, there is quite a few areas that have less than free press/speech.

What is this talk about Turkey I hear......? ....is it thanksgiving yet?

Perhaps YouTube should simply block all access to the site from IP addresses in Turkey. Maybe then enough Turkish citizens will bitch at their government to get this silly policy eliminated. Who is the government going to listen to, the one person complaining about an "offensive" video, or the thousands or millions complaining about not being able to access the site?

I'm very pleased to see that this country is led by intelligent people with common sense. On that note I totally don't understand why they have not joined the EU yet!

cuz the eu would find some stupid ass way to fine them for anti-trust infringement by blocking access to youtube?

long live democracy, how Turkey can even ask to be admitted to the eu, let alone negotiate about it is beyond my comprehension
