Thanks Radish for posting this in Back page News. It's a video of the iPhone launch in the UK.

From Crave TV: Last week we got a cryptic invitation to an event at the Apple Store on Regent Street. Not wanting to miss an opportunity to possibly see the UK iPhone, we galloped over there to get a glimpse at whatever Apple had hidden in the store. Fortunately, it was the iPhone, and better yet, Steve Jobs himself turned up to show it off. The British press were perhaps a little less respectful than their US counterparts and posed Jobs some rather tough questions.

Take a look at the video to hear what ol' Jobsy had to say about iPhone hacks, why we're not getting a 3G iPhone just yet and why he thinks it's worth paying so much for it. Plus have a look at our photo story for close up images of the day's events and the UK iPhone.

I thought it did support exchange.

Naaa, I'll never buy an iPhone.

Im definitely not going to buy one, when you have to pay for it on a £40 contract!.
Plus the only decent thing it has is the touch screen/interface.

exactly, if you want the touch screen get the touch ipod, and keep your cell phone.

the iphone is way overpriced, and the plans are rediculous.

I'll buy one and unlock it, hopefully without activating with O2.

Would like one, definately. Just has a lot of features I like in a package I like!

The British press were perhaps a little less respectful

Hmm people in the UK a little less respectful?
#5.1 RAID 0 on 20 Sep 2007 - 18:23
I wouldn't say that. A few people being "less respectful" doesn't mean it's everyone in that country.

After watching the video, I would say no one there was being at all disrespectful. Just people asking questions.

I wouldn't say disrespectful at all really.

When it launched over here none of the hacking tools existed yet, so there were no questions to be asked about it. Now they're out and people had a chance to ask Jobs some questions about it so they took their chance.

Just never release a product and say it can't be hacked. That just makes the hackers do it faster.
#5.3 David3k on 20 Sep 2007 - 19:30
That's because people still think that Jobs deserves some sort of extra respect...don't really understand it myself.
#5.4 |Rapture| on 20 Sep 2007 - 19:53
Less respectful than what?

Cant say I heard anything bad in there. lots of valid questions and with the exception of avoiding the carrier question lots of good answers.

Has to make a nice change from a room full of starry eyed ass kissers.
#5.5 theyarecomingforyou on 20 Sep 2007 - 21:32
Less respectful? They asked the questions that people wanted asking and did so without going after him for the sake of it. The only question he looked slightly foolish was about different carriers for different European countries (after saying that O2 was the perfect carrier culturally) and really he looked foolish because the business decision doesn't make sense... how can O2 be the perfect carrier culturally over here but T-Mobile in Germany? I appreciate that services offered can vary between countries but the carrier decision was obviously very political and based upon how much money they'd make (I'm not complaining but he shouldn't try to pass it off as a "cultural" benefit).

i dind't think they were disrespectful, they simply asked the questions everyone was thining, what are they supposed to just go in and do the apple fanboy thing oh steve your great, the iphones great can i have your children.

they were all polite with their questions and none of them rude, they al;l showed respect. just caue they asked questions he didn't really want to answer isn't their fault, and not disrespectful

to quote jobs "more mega pixels doesn't make a better picture" does he know somethign the rest of the world doesn't

Techncially it's true. compare the5-6 Mpx Kodak cameras to the more expensive Canon 10-11mpx(or whatever it is) camers of the same segment. You'll notice that the differece are marginal and in some cases the kodak gives a better picture while in a few rare cases the higher mpx can givea better picture, though thiis is becuase it can handle moire better. but the Kodak has excellent handling of moire anyway.

granted these are a totally diifferent class of cameras.

For a cellphone though, yet mpx does make a differencem BUT bigger lenses capable of collection more light and better glass may give you better pictures on a 2 ps camera than cheap cell phone optics and a 6mpx sensor.

ok comparing different brands fair enough, you woudl get the same thing with old polaroid cameras, but same brand camera with same technology, the more MP the better, true?

I was expecting a deeper voice

#7 Jugalator on 20 Sep 2007 - 20:00
Well it's all warranted questions... Especially the 3G part that's even more common in Europe. Actually it's pretty crazy to release a high end (or at least high priced) media-oriented phone here without that. As a European, I would doubt about getting an iPhone even if it was competitively priced, which it's not.
#8 ntbnnt on 20 Sep 2007 - 20:31
Some tough qestions but I wouldn't say grilling.... maybe stir-fried....
#9 .kvn on 20 Sep 2007 - 20:49
The questions were certainly not a grilling. Jobs wasn't even fazed.
#10 +BeLGaRaTh on 20 Sep 2007 - 21:00
More megapixels doesnt make a better picture .. ROFL

So, they picked the most customer unfriendly provider (O2), and the most customer unfriendly reseller (Carphone Whorehouse), it is a "marriage" made in heaven, or is that hell?
#11 theyarecomingforyou on 20 Sep 2007 - 21:27
I liked his response (or lack of) to the question about different carriers for different European countries. There were some very good questions in there and he obviously wasn't prepared for some of them. Not quite a grilling but some tough, though fair, questions.

erm... why is he talking to people like they are idiots ?
#12.1 phantasmorph on 21 Sep 2007 - 00:41
Because he's used to having to speak to most Apple customers that way?

HAHA! SO true. I've had a number of Mac lovers say to me, "I don't get viruses, everything always works!" I tell them "Yeah, it's because you don't know much about computers, you need to buy something that doesn't work with everything." The typical response is "Well, I like it"

I like Macs.. but Christ Almighty, the majority of the people that buy them, don't know jack **** about computers. To each their own.

Lol...I think you hit the nail on the head.

Why would someone buy an iPhone instead of a N95 or something ? Apple is offering what Nokia was offering 2-3 years ago. iPhone is FAR from revolutionary.
#13.1 theyarecomingforyou on 20 Sep 2007 - 22:27
I think it's more about polish and looks than being revolutionary... obviously it's missing features a lot of users take for granted but the music side and interface are both very polished. Personally I much prefer the styling of Sony Ericsson phones, as I've never been a fan of Nokia's latest phones.
#14 Toology on 21 Sep 2007 - 02:45
Jobs's reality distortion field doesn't seem to work outside of America. That explains all the questions.
(1 reply) #15 Stup0t on 21 Sep 2007 - 08:14
The funny thing is that all the mac owners have white this and that.... desktop.... white..... laptop....white....ipod...white.....etc etc etc.

Iphone - Black

NNNNnoooooooooooo it dosn't match anymore I am going to have to go out and buy all new kit
#15.1 simon360 on 21 Sep 2007 - 19:08
When's the last time you took a look at Apples product line? Except for the Macbook (and only the macbook), everything is black or silver, or both, and made of aluminum/glass.
#16 +DrunkenMaster on 21 Sep 2007 - 13:38
It goes to show you that at least some of the ooohs and ahhs of Apple special events is taken away when an opportunity arises for people to ask questions.

Which is why you never see executives take questions in large audiences, esp when recorded, for a big product launch.

I think Jobs is just going to start launching product info on the Apple Movie Trailers site instead.
#17 Septimus on 21 Sep 2007 - 13:44
Once they release an iPhone which doesn't have its tech based in the dark ages and has GPS which I don't need to be connected to the internet to use (reason: who the f*** wants to pay roaming data charges in another country where GPS is the most useful?).
#18 Croquant on 21 Sep 2007 - 19:47
It's seriously overpriced, you can't change the batter, you have to use iTunes with it, and it doesn't even have a real keyboard. No thanks.
(1 reply) #19 plastikaa on 21 Sep 2007 - 20:32
It wasn't necessary to ask why 3G wasn't included... it was obvious they did it to increase what they could advertise the batter life as....

however I've suggested it before and suggested it again... the speed difference from EDGE to 3G is a greater multiple than the battery life consumption differences... hence if the 3G / EDGE power consumption is being managed efficiently to only be in use when needed - you'd assume that 3G would be the better choice and actually be able to download more before the battery ran out.

It would be interesting if someone had access to an iPhone and a few 3G phones - who could charge them full then see "how much" they can browse before they run out... for example reloading something like a 100kb webpage every minute till they ran out.
#19.1 whocares78 on 24 Sep 2007 - 03:05
it was absolutley a question worth asking, apple have never really answered it and every other phone has it.
#20 McDave on 23 Sep 2007 - 01:57
Few people are going to be able to afford this product as it comes out to around £50 a month (on the £35 tarrif).
