To complement the Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition, AMD has silently launched its Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition. All technical aspects of the processor are identical to its non-Black Edition counterpart; the only new feature is an unlocked multiplier – allowing overclockers to increase the frequency of the processor without the need to adjust the HyperTransport clock. In other words, the chipmaker is hoping the processor’s overclocking performance will make it a worthy new product. According sources familiar with the new CPUs launch schedule, retail availability of the processors should come later this month, but as of right now no major supplier is selling the new processor. AMD guidance sets the MSRP of the Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition at $136 in quantities of 1,000.

Looks like AMD is really desperate for cash; ATI wasn't cheap. imho, a year or two should pass at least before we start seeing really something innovative and competitive as a result of that merger.

But hey, Black is a cool color, so this must be a cool plan for the youth generation. :p

Gotta love the Intel fanboys. Even though AMD is not the performance king, they still make good quality products with an exceptional price/performance ratio. I have no problems with either company, I buy what i think is best suited for the task at hand. And who knows, the overclockers may be able to squeeze more performance out of the 5000+ Black Edition than the top Core 2 Duo. In any case, it is unfair and unwise to judge products until they are given a chance to prove themselves within the market.
