While many considered the LCD issues plaguing some iPod Touch units a hardware issue, Apple just released a firmware update for the device that appears to fix the problem.

That's the issue many Touch owners are dealing with at the MacRumors forums right now, it APPEARS to fix the problem.

Some forum members speculate that the update, which is a huge 150 MB, alters the contrast and brightness settings of the LCD screen. Others simply believe that the incorrect application of the LCD coating theory was just plain wrong, but that raises the question: Why did Apple admit to shipping faulty units if it could've asked users to wait for an update to fix the issue?

No one can answer that question, but one thing's certain: the update significantly fixes, at least to a degree, the LCD issue.

I rly don't get it. If you gonna sell a product, my guess would be to test it to death before actually selling the darn thing.

Now they are selling it, and all of a sudden there is a problem with the lcd...... how?!

There is a marketing balance point that they shoot for. Test products internally for too long, and you lose the jump momentum into the market. Release too soon, and you run into too many of these potential warranty issues.

Nothing is released and is flawless, software or hardware.

Unfortunately, companies nowadays tend to rest on "we'll patch the firmware"

i pre-orderd my touch when it was announced,, from what i can decipher, i have a week 37 ( week affected ), and have had no issues before or after the update.

I have a week 37 iPod Touch, and can confirm that this update for me at least has had a significant improvement on the screen issue.

I would have kept the touch even without this update though, cos o be honest even before it didnt bother me.
I just hope in the next update they unlock iCal so can make changes on the touch instead of on PC and having to sync the changes

It has improved the issue, but it is still there. I am waiting for the local Apple store to get some more in and they are going replacing mine. They confirmed mine still has the issue.

Can they use a more updated picture than the 1st generation iPod? lol.

I think the picture is from a 3rd generation iPod, but it won't help in this topic !
Still waiting for mine, hope i won't have the LCD issue.

150 MB? Even if there's other fixes in that update, how can it be so big? Someone accidentally zipped their pr0n stash along with it?
