Samsung has thrown its weight entirely behind its dual-format Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD player and will de-emphasis its BD-only offerings, online reports suggest. However, the two-format machine, the BD-U5000, may have been delayed. Separate reports point to a December release in the US, with the European debut taking place early in 2008.

There was a report earlier this year -- or was it late last year -- that Broadcom developed a software-on-a-chip solution that could change the strength of the blue laser depending on whether you put a HDDVD or BluRay DVD into the drive...wonder whatever happened to this, as we'd have dual players a lot earlier?!

There is already a player that supports both released by LG quite a while ago...

This is the first player to support both formats interactive features fully.

The LG doesn't do that.
