AMD Plans to Slash Pricing of Dual-Core Chips Shortly

Advanced Micro Devices has notified its partners that starting from next Monday, the 8th of October, it plans to decrease the pricing of some of its dual-core AMD Athlon 64 X2 chips. The price corrections will allow the world’s second largest maker of x86 microprocessors to get better positioned for holiday season. “As we begin a new quarter and prepare for the busiest time of the year, selected AMD dual-core desktop processors will have a reduction in suggested prices effective next Monday, October 8. This will be a great opportunity to upgrade customers to dual-core, as the AMD Athlon X2 5000+, 5200+, 5600+, 6000+ and 6400+ processors all will feature new pricing,” a statement by AMD sent to partners published by AMDZone web-site reads.

The new exact new prices for the higher-end AMD dual-core microprocessors are unclear, but given that the fastest chip from the company is currently sold for $251, it is highly likely that the price corrections will not be substantial and will be generally meant to align pricing of AMD Athlon 64 X2 processors with mainboards based on AMD chipsets so that to attract attention of system integrators to AMD’s platforms.

yeh. i'm stuck with a 939 system (which is by no means a dinosaur) i've just swapped my 3800 x2 for a 4200 x2 with a nice zalman cooler and copious amounts of overclocking

[the 4200x2 being the only 939 proc i can find that's reasonably priced given the fact that 939 is obsolete]

lol iam stuck with socket 478, i have a 479 dual core pentimum around but i cant find a good mother board to put it in.
its the pin type socket.

Anyone know the cheapest one which can easily decode 1080p video on a single core? I know on intel chips but I'm out of touch with the AMD's.

5000+ X2 would be able to do it fine, it's a dual core.

Can't wait for phenom X4 though finally be able to upgrade. + Asus RD780 AM2+ mobo hopefully

I was very close to upgrading my 754 board to a cheap 939 board (with AGP and DDR), but someone pointed out it would be a better upgrade path if I switched to an ASRock Socket 775 Intel board. I can still use my AGP and DDR stuff, but now I can upgrade to PCI-E, DDR2, and Quad Core in the future!
