MySpace will open up to third party developers within the next few months. Facebook opened up its APIs in May this year and has been rewarded with a flood of applications written by third parties for the site. Although MySpace still claims the number one social networking spot, Facebook has seen fast growth this year as it entered the mainstream from its previous audience of students.

Speaking at an industry event in San Francisco, Facebook chief executive Chris DeWolfe said: "The idea will be to allow outside developers to tightly integrate their applications into MySpace. "There is going to be paid revenue opportunities for all the developers."

Lame... Myspace either can't think of their own ideas..and when they do think of them they sure as hell make them look like something from the 90's.

oh please, do not turn into facebook applications! thats why i dont use facebook anymore. its gotten out of hand.

everytime i log in i have like 50 application requests and the applications are pointless and pretty much the same as every other application

These days my friends aren't so invite happy I guess it's because everyone has settled down and found what applications they like/don't like.

However, this announcement won't make me go back to MySpace. Everyone else has migrated from it. Especially here in New Zealand, the number 1 social networking website is Bebo, followed a few places down by Facebook. MySpace is trailing (depending on where you get your stats from).

Just as I thought MySpace couldn't get any worse...

Seems like a bad idea to me. Myspace is already a mess to get around, especially the profiles with custom html templates. Add some poorly coded extensions and it's just going to become a bigger mess.

They should work on cleaning the site up so it's more useable, and then consider adding these sort of things.

If IE killed web standards last decade, Myspace will do it for this one.
