Every Sunday, as part of the Sunday's Member-Written Review of the Week, the front page will bring you a new review posted by one of our very own members in the Reviews by Members for Members subforum. The subform is predominantly hardware reviews but software reviews have an equal chance of being picked. This week I have stumbled upon rajputwarrior's review of the 16GB iPod Touch. Pictures are courtesy of Apple and rajputwarrior.

"So this will be my review of an iPod Touch 16gb. I just got this recently and like every geek, first think I did was hack it, but I will talk about that later. Anyways, here it is. And oh yeah, pics will be coming soon (showing of all the apps). To give a bit of a background of my iPod experience, I have owned two nanos and a shuffle (all of which are first gen). So in terms of iPod upgrades, it doesn't get much bigger (well, maybe an iPhone)."

A note to future reviewers -- and I say this with respect and appreciation -- please open a window before taking photos.

The reviewer was fortunate enough not to encounter one gaping flaw in the device: A lack of 802.1X support. So many colleges need it to connect to wifi... (Read: me)

it supports 802.11B and G. Check specs on apples site.
#2.2 rajputwarrior on 21 Oct 2007 - 16:10
it supports A B and G, also WEP, WPA, and WPA2 which i do mention in a later post.
#2.3 MioTheGreat on 21 Oct 2007 - 17:32
I said 802.1X, not 802.11x.

802.1X is a port based authentication scheme used with ethernet and 802.11a/b/g/n. A lot of colleges and businesses use it, and it makes the iPod Touch utterly useless on those networks (it can't connect)

OSX has supported it since 10.3, so its absence in the Touch is completely inexusable.

i have tried it at my college and at UBC and it worked fine....

I didn't say all college networks. Probably not even a majority, but there are a decent number of colleges that use the 802.1X authentication that the iPod Touch lacks.

oh, i did some more research, and yeah you can, if you jailbreak it, you can download the support for 802.1X networks with an open source library

802.1x ???? you mean 802.11x???, ok looked up 802.1x, and now i am just annoyed, why not think of a different name so people don't get confused

Neither xsupplicant nor wpa_supplicant is compatible with the iPod Touch, and the only project I found that had anything to do with 802.1x on the iPT/iPhone didn't seem to be any further than the planning stage.

it is called OpenLLDP, and i have it installed on my touch.

http://openlldp.sourceforge.net/

#2.10 MioTheGreat on 22 Oct 2007 - 01:58
OpenLLDP doesn't add 802.1X support. It's a LLDP handler. (802.1AB)
#2.11 rajputwarrior on 22 Oct 2007 - 02:08
alright fine, i give up, the description on the installer said it did, but whatever. you win

Hey, I wish I didn't win. I want to get an iPod Touch, but I can't use its wifi until either someone hacks a supplicant on it, or Apple adds support.

Does the iPhone even have this?

The thing is in designing the iPod touch they probably didn't really take cases like yours into account; 802.1X isn't very common in home networks and places like that.

No. The iPhone does not.

But as I said, aren't college kids a big market? Quite a few campus networks use it.
