Apple stops Boot Camp downloads

Apple Inc. has pulled the beta of Boot Camp, the application that lets Mac users run Windows XP or Vista on their Intel-powered machines, from its servers in preparation for Friday's launch of Leopard.

Although a Boot Camp 1.4 beta page remains live, clicking on the download link brings up an error message that reads: "The page you tried was not found." A graphic of the Mac OS X 10.5 packaging appears in the background. Earlier this month, Apple reminded users that the license to Boot Camp would expire when Leopard shipped. The application's beta has been available free of charge for Mac owners running Mac OS X 10.4, commonly known as Tiger.

While licenses will expire when Leopard launches, Apple has confirmed that Windows partitions created with Boot Camp will continue to work. However, the Boot Camp Assistant, software that sets up and manages Windows partitions, will not. Apple also has said that it will stop delivering driver updates to beta users.

Most analysts believe that Apple will not sell a separate Tiger-only version of Boot Camp, but will instead use the dual-boot software to entice users to upgrade. Leopard, which is priced at $129 for a single-user license and $199 for a five-license family pack, goes on sale Friday.

And . . .

1) Boot Camp was always a Beta, or rather, not a full version of the software.

2) The Beta is no longer offered, as the full version will be in Leopard.

3) Windows partitions already in existence on Macs, created with Boot Camp, will continue to work.

Lock-down? Google the words "Microsoft" and "activation." Boom . . . there's your lock-down in all its bloated WGA glory.

Perhaps you should look up the words "lock" and "down". Be warned: It will probably display a picture of iPod+iTunes.

And if you have time, try looking "bloat".

So what would you say if a DX-10 beta was putout by MS as a beta for XP? Then, they decide to do EXACTLY what apple did... except they could say.. "you can't install anymore games with DX-10." You'd be talking about how much better Apple is. Am I right or wrong on this one?

Whocares why stop downloads of a beta unless you release the full version
2) The Beta is no longer offered, as the full version will be in Leopard.
they didn't actually say that in the article, and what about users of old OS's, does apple not care, or is this just to force people that want to run windwos to buy the new OSX
3) Windows partitions already in existence on Macs, created with Boot Camp, will continue to work.
we can all read too however THAT'S not the POINT, what about new partitions you want to create

OK, if your "lock down" comparision is anywhere near correct, you are talkign about almost every new app out there, a whole bnunch of games etc etc, most companies use activation, to verify legal copies of their software, i actually think adobe's is the worst, and can't even be closely compared to apple stopping boot camp.

i give you one tip, stop trying to find excuses for all of apples crap. hell at least i can admit when MS F&*ks up

A lot of people can, I guess that's the difference (or one major difference) between people who are happy with a product or company, and others that defend it tooth and nail. I think of this word.. ya know.. it's on the tip of my tongue... oh yeah.. FANBOY-ism!!! Man, it took me a few to think of it. It must be all this heavy drinking.

All joking aside, no company is perfect.. well, maybe Honda... maybe.
