Microsoft and some of its partners are hoping that Vista will be the gift that fills their holiday stocking this year. This is the first year that notebooks and desktop computers loaded with Vista software were available for the recent lucrative back-to-school season, as well as for the upcoming holiday season.
As Windows Vista was only widely released at the end of January 2007, Microsoft and its partners essentially missed both of these peak retail periods in 2006, although retailers did offer customers who bought machines upgrade coupons to Vista once it was available. "I expect sales of notebooks and desktops loaded with Windows Vista to eclipse the sales we did last holiday season of machines with Windows XP," Wendy Fritz, a vice president at Best Buy, in Richfield, Minn., told eWEEK at a Microsoft-sponsored dinner Oct. 23 to discuss the first holiday season with Windows Vista broadly available.

Surely this speaks volumes of the actual opinion the majority of the market has for Vista, I know when XP is finally discontinued, Ubuntu will be my OS of choice.
The ONLY good thing about Vista is the fact that has done more for the uptake of alternative OS's than ANYTHING that Apple or Linux could have done for themselves.
Also notice in the article, the unfounded sense of optimism and hope, LOL.
I fully intend to support manufacturer that do not bundle their hardware with Vista.
Yeah, that vastly improved level of security and stability simply not possible in XP because of limitations in how the operating system works.....Screw that, it's not a 'good thing'.

Fact: Vista has more out of the box support for hardware than any previous release of Windows.
Fact: Vista has extended driver support through Windows Update to include more drivers than any other Windows release.
Fact: The vast majority of applications that did have problems on Vista's release (a relatively small percentage of all Windows software) has been updated since.
I know that one day, when Vista is the dominant OS, this endless and senseless bashing of Vista will stop. Everyone will praise it for being so stable, and speedy (it is all these things now), and will start bashing the next Microsoft OS.
And now on to commenting about the article.
No doubt PC sales will be better than last year. PC sales (in general) increase year-on-year, irrespective of OS releases. The majority of consumers don't even know what an Operating System is, or that it comes in different variety's. Furthermore, manufacturers are now releasing quality Vista based PC's with good driver support, so consumers who do know about OS's will feel re-assured in their purchasing decision.

They only want to buy some "good and fast" computer and due to the fact they have no idea what an OS is they are NOT going to go into a BestBuy asking where the XP computers are. They are going to buy whatever crap they find first. (Probably an Emachines). Since all computers basically come with Vista preloaded, they are going to get Vista.Vista will sell over the holidays, NOT because people want it specifically, its because people can't tell the difference and don't care about the differences between Vista and XP.
