10 Cool Things about Vista you may not have heard of

With the release of MacOS X Leopard, the comparisons between Vista and Leopard are out in force. Windows Vista had a rough start and has taken its share of beatings on-line including here at Neowin.net. But after 9 months of availability, Vista has shaped up nicely and SP1 looks to massauge most of the remaining complaints with Microsoft's new OS.

Moreover, it is often easy to forget just how big of a release Windows Vista really was. While Leopard claims "300 new features" most of those features are minor in nature (Let's face it, MacOS X is so good that it's in the enviable position of only needing to evolve, Windows Vista, by contrast, had to play a lot of catch-up). Windows Vista has closer to 10,000 new features when one adds both major and minor updates to the mix.

WinCustomize has an article outlining 10 examples of minor features that rarely get discussed and yet make a small but noticeable improvement to the Windows experience over Windows XP.

What does it "snip"?
#1.3 vetbangbang023 on 29 Oct 2007 - 22:36
Holy crap, that is freaking awesome. It makes taking screen shots so much easier.

#1.6 midway40 on 30 Oct 2007 - 02:57
Have you been in Windows Features and turned Tablet PC Optional components off? The Snipping Tool is part of these components.
#1.7 +IceDogg on 30 Oct 2007 - 06:22
I'm really surprised how many people didn't know about this one. Not bragging I only knew because of someone like Tuffgong4 in the first place..and I agree it's a great little tool. I also really like the improved searching capabilities.

I agree...up to #4. Polish could have definately been given higher priority. #9, I don't know, since I've never run it (for an extended amount of time) on a laptop.

Everything else on that list is pretty dead-on.

We are? No one makes the trolls come out, they do that on their own. If you dopn't like what a newspaper publishes, do you write a letter to the editor chiding him for flame-bait?
#4.2 +Dakkaroth on 29 Oct 2007 - 22:10
A lot of this is mostly Vista compared to XP, not OS X.

Not that I'm a fanboy, but being one who's going to get Vista just for tech support purposes, I want to know your reasoning.

AGREED.
#5.4 toadeater on 29 Oct 2007 - 23:17
If you think he's in the minority in thinking that, you're wrong. While parts of Vista may be ok, or even good, overall it is an unfinished product that still needs a great deal of work to fix. If it can ever be fixed before the release of Windows 7.

In other words, a typical 1.0 release from Microsoft. Except this release may have a few more serious problems from the new, hastily-added or cut-down features included in Vista than XP ever did. Those things (UAC, WGA, WDDM driver performance problems, networking and file management issues, high memory usage, etc) need to be fixed before Vista can replace XP, or before more Windows users really do switch to OS X, and maybe even Linux.

Vista sales slow despite record MS profit

The sales rate of Microsoft's Windows Vista is gradually slowing down as the operating system reaches the one-year anniversary of its release to businesses, according to the company's latest financial results. Shipments of the OS peaked in the first three months after its January release, when the company sold an average of 20 million copies per month thanks to a wave of early adopters and users waiting for Vista to replace older systems.
#5.5 +xiphi on 29 Oct 2007 - 23:28
So what if sales decline after the initial release of Vista. That happens with any product.

It is in many ways an unfinished product, but when you say "overall" you're making a subjective judgment. One that I think judgmental people who follow tech stories have more than the average person. While some people who should never have bought Vista install it on their machines; the people who have bought new machines or upgrade over XP on capable machines I think are happy enough and pleased with improvements over XP. I don't think people who have bought new Vista laptops are really that unhappy.

While Microsoft certainly needs to get its act together; some people balloon this into saying "VISTA IS CRAP". No, its unfinished has some loose ends and has a lot less improvements that should be there development time speaking, but its not crap.
#5.7 +Dakkaroth on 30 Oct 2007 - 05:44
My point was for HIM to explain it, as I believed he was just another idiot troll. I'm sure there are reasons people not liking Vista, but without one, you're full of it. Especially if you haven't tried it because you're then taking other people's opinion as your own. Which makes you even more full of it, if you ask me.

All I've heard so far is people talking about all the problems they find when trying to replace it with xp.

I've yet to meet anyone in real life who has had, overall, a positive impression from Vista.
#6 mel00 on 29 Oct 2007 - 22:43
if yah knew how many laptops/system had to downgrade to xp.
and most annoying one some Toshiba laptop and gateway system and latop didn't have no support for xp
so had to hunt for drivers.
but back to subject as much vista has to offer people still prefer xp, solely because was huge improvement from win98
and since xp does good job and less BSOD usually because bad drivers or user errors and spyware/virus all user fault for trying to download everything they see has free on it.
I have use Vista for while and I still have mix feeling about it...
#7 virtorio on 29 Oct 2007 - 22:52
These are all good fundamental improvements and features, but I question their coolness.

You're somewhat stupid, period. What he was saying was that if Microsoft counted Vista's features like Apple did with Leopard, you would have 10,000. Actually, it's more like 11,000 (Paul Thurrott).

And plus, if you wanted to insult it, it's not VistaMe2, it's WindowsMe2.

So, you are stupid, period.

Snip Tool sucks, it doesn't even save it to file automatically for you like Hypersnap or Snagit.
(8 replies) #11 wilbert on 29 Oct 2007 - 23:11
Ok, #2 is total crap.

I have tied Vista on two different laptops and have come away feeling that the wireless networking in Vista sucks. In XP after you added the network, which is easy, it instantly connects every time you turn on the laptop. In Vista, after I turn on the laptop it will sometimes connect within a minute or so and sometimes it will not even connect and force me to recreate the profile. Plus, you have to "refresh" the wifi list around 6-23 times before the network I am looking for will show up.

In XP Wireless works and it works FAST.
#11.1 +xiphi on 29 Oct 2007 - 23:24
Wireless networking works fine on my laptop. Never had issues with it connecting to my home network after I've taken my laptop out to places.
#11.2 WarLuigi on 29 Oct 2007 - 23:41
If you're using a Dell Laptop there is the problem. Dell has an onboard tool that simply sucks at wireless connections.

Luck you . I had a Dell in my hands for about three weeks that just craped out at WIFI.
#11.5 +Smigit on 30 Oct 2007 - 04:01
Absolutely no problems with wireless in Vista....and in fact going back to my XP desktop and resetting the network was just a pain in the backside. Not that it took that long, but it was less smooth than it is on Vista.

Only thing I'd like to see is a quicker way to see how much data has been sent and received. In XP you just double clicked. The info's still there but it takes a bit more time to get the window with the info to come up as it's more hidden. Still, for average users thats probably for the best.

I got this tip from TweakVista to create a direct shortcut to Network Connections:

Adding direct shortcut to Network Connections
#11.7 virtorio on 30 Oct 2007 - 10:07
I upgraded my old (Toshiba) laptop to Vista and had no end of problems with wireless (and wired networking for that matter). Though on my new (HP) laptop I've never had a single issue with either wired or wireless networking.

I guess some of it must be down to driver issues.
#11.8 wilbert on 30 Oct 2007 - 20:00
The networking works, the problem is how quickly it "grabs" the wireless network you have setup. I have tried this on 3 different laptops: Dell D630, Lenovo T60, and Lenovo T61. They all act the same in that Vista takes a minute to realize there is WiFi connection, establish it (if it can) and then your good to go. Windows XP will see the network almost instantly everytime and connect.

All 3 of these were done with clean installs and the latest Intel drivers as all three laptops us the Intel WiFi chipsets from the 39xx to the new 4xxx series.

#13.4 yottabytewizard on 01 Nov 2007 - 16:56
I also could introduce myself, and a lot of friends, coorporative admins, programmers, gamers. I don't know a single soul that likes Vista over XP. Even noob friends of mine (who don't know much about computers).

I use any other OS, linux, XP, MAC, anything but Vista. It has been causing my some problems on different computers, and all the people that know me are begging to remove Vista and install XP. Actully, yesterday I got 3 laptops and 1 PC just for that matter.
#14 DKAngel on 29 Oct 2007 - 23:47
i cant stand xp anymore it feels old, slugish and out of date
#15 +majortom1981 on 29 Oct 2007 - 23:50
There are features that nobody mentions. I don't have office so I find the vista calendar program really helpful .The integrated search in te start menu helps a lot also.

Shadow copy is also a life saver and have used it on more then one ocasion .Also the built in full systemn backup image software is awesome also.

Vista is great you cant blame microsoft for all the lazy 3rd party's and their drivers.
Wirless is also much better for me then xp.

One more thing. I also find the dual core usage much better on vista. On xp when I would switch things to their own processor 50 percent of the time xp would blue screen on me. On the same computer (a dell xps 410 with a core 2 duo) with vista not a single error when switching porograms to the different cores.

Fair enough, perhaps odd conflict or other vendor issue then.

while i agree that vista has some marked improvements over XP, the fact that they listed the improved wireless networking is a joke. Vista's "profiles" for different networks do little more than to screw up connections when you switch between a public place and your home network, and to navigate and change wireless settings has about 50 more dialogs in vista than it did in XP.

I had a feeling too when I saw this on my PC, but since the DTS already begun 3 weeks ago where I live (had to remove the automatic synchronization, like everyone else here, like we do every year since Windows XP), it was not a NICE feeling.
More like rage....

At least they have a hot fix for this (Portuguese), but giving it on windows update before the problem occurs would be too much to ask.

1 and 5 are nice improvements from XP, the rest are, well, nothing special or downright useless.

Polish? Please. Better thumbnails? Maybe a little but at the expense of performance. Disabling that **** makes Vista's explorer run much faster.

Vista has some nice little improvements here and there but overall I still contend that it's a slow, bloated, badly designed hog.

2. My system is much faster than the majority of systems out there. It runs Windows XP just fine, it runs Ubuntu just fine, in fact it even runs OSx86 just fine. My system is not the problem, Vista is a slow bloated hog, or did you just gloss over that part.
#24.3 Swordnyx on 31 Oct 2007 - 00:32
Yeah dude if your PC can't run Vista at average or high speeds you need to get a new computer. I though the same thing when I installed it on my desktop, then got ****ed and bought a new one. It's blazing fast.
