Best Buy has embraced the holiday cheer a bit early. Not only did they match and beat Walmart’s $100 HD DVD deal, but when they ran out of Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD players they gave their customers HD-A3s instead. The HD-A2 is a discontinued product, meaning that Best Buy could have simply told all those that had ordered one that the stock had finished, and cancelled all purchases. The retailer instead decided to replace all backordered HD-A2 players with the third-generation device which retails for $299.99.

Because we value your business, we will be fulfilling your order with the next generation Toshiba HD DVD Player (model # HD-A3) that is replacing the HD-A2 in Toshiba's lineup of HD DVD Players,” reads a letter sent to the Best Buy customers. On top of getting a newer product for the same ridiculously cheap price, customers automatically, since the deal applies to all third-generation Toshiba HD DVD players, get the movies "300" and "The Bourne Identity” in addition to the five free movies that can be had after a mail-in rebate.

I think this is really an example of going above and beyond for the customer, and it's both shocking and commendable that best buy actually stepped up like this

After the fiasco of the person having the problem ordering his 1TB drive and getting ceramic tiles... it's more of a push to resecure their failing reputation.

BestBuy Canada is charging $350 for the exact same player! What a rip. I plan on going to the store and asking for the same price as in the US. If they don't give me the same price, it's cross border shopping time...

Best Buy isn't selling the unit for $99. They are only fulfilling the A2 orders than can't be completed because they ran out of stock. The A3 will be on sale for $199 this week.
#11.2 zivan56 on 04 Nov 2007 - 10:23
It's still $150 more, which isn't exactly a small price difference.

first walmart, now bestbuy selling the $100 HD-DVD player. This can't be good for blu-ray, I think you will see a sub $200 blu-ray player announced soon for the holidays, even if it means selling at a loss.

I'm stilling waiting for some no-brand company to release a HD-DVD/Blu-ray combo player for dirt cheap. Not that I will jump out and buy these, but many people will. And it will force the brand name companies to come out with similar product at a competitive price with the no-brand ones. Well, hopefully next year.

Well, it's neither no-brand, nor dirt cheap, but Samsung is supposed to be releasing its BD-UP5000 dual-format player before Christmas – which every reviewer I've read so far says is more or less perfect in all respects.

The MSRP is supposed to be $1000.00, but I doubt if they'll be selling for that much considering the current retail climate. Nevertheless, it's sure to be expensive; but at least it'll do everything you'd likely want it to do.

Even if they sell it for $800, why would people buy that when they can buy the Toshiba for $199 or less? The more people that buy only HD-DVD players, the higher the chance the format war will be over in a shorter period.
#16.3 +Smigit on 04 Nov 2007 - 05:53
Yeah no way they could sell it for $1000. People would just get a $100 or $200 HD-DVD drive and a PS3 or whatever for less. Still, the sooner the dual format players hit the market the sooner this format war will be over. I dont think single format players will do much but prolong things. Sure these players are a great price but the PS3 is selling well enough too to give the BluRay a good leg up. I think the best solution is to roll out the dual format players soon before many people have single format devices because neither part is going to win this war within the next 18 months.

I'm aware of the existing dual format players, LG has one too. The reason they are expensive is because they don't have any competitions. Thats why it is important for the no-brand companies to release a dirt cheap dual format players, then it'll force Samsung or LG to lower their prices.

Back then, DVD players were expensive too until a company no one heard of called Apex started selling $100 players at Circuit City. Next thing you know, all the brand name companies dropped their prices too.

The A3 is basically just the A2 in a different case though isn't it?
#17.1 Prowler on 05 Nov 2007 - 15:13

Not exactly, the A3 is third generation, A2 is second generation, so the A3 is newer technology, I just replaced my A2 with an A3, and I would not recommend buying an A2 (it had problems playing certain DVDs even after I upgraded the firmware, and the A3 play them fine).
