Leopard vs. Vista: feature chart showdown

There's no doubt, Vista and Leopard are both extremely advanced, feature rich consumer operating systems. But way back in January when Vista launched knew we had little choice but pit the two in a head to head chartngraph Thunderdome competition. We know we're not even going to be able to stop the epic fanboy arguments about break out over this one, so we just ask that you try to keep it fair. Leopard vs. Vista: it's on.

NOTE: The chart is only for out of box features, and does not take into account 3rd party software. We realize that with a few choice apps this chart would look completely different -- but that's not what we're after here.
  • Green indicates a category with more and/or better features, and generally a better user experience.
  • Red indicates that a category not quite up to snuff. Either it doesn't yet exist in the OS or it just sucks more than the alternative.
  • † (dagger) indicates a category we think are too subjective or not similar enough to judge. These do not have any clear winner.
  • ‡ (double dagger) indicates a category that is in many ways subjective, but that we feel one category is still ahead. Your own tastes may vary.
  • Notes help out with a little background, where appropriate.

Not a bad break-down of features. Good read.

Yeah, but I felt a lot could've gone either way, depending on your preference (Windows Photo Gallery vs. iPhoto)

I have to agree. Some feature really are just user preference.

Its surprsing that Vista did better in Media considering that that is suppose to be OSX's thing.

I still consider both to be mostly bloatware anyways.

FrontRow2 is ok but Media Center really is nice.

How does Leopard's integrated screen capturing work that it beat out the Vista Snipping Tool? I think the Snipping Tool is fantastic.

I don't know how the Snipping tool works but I can say that in Leopard you don't have to open an app to do it. Just hit Cmd+Shift+3 or 4 to take a full screenshot or crop respectively.

I keep the snipping tool in my quick launch bar, so I just have to hit Windows+6 to do it.

And it's just the PrtScn key or Alt+PrtScn (for a particular screen print of a window) in Windows, no app needed. Actually it's been there for every version of Windows, I believe (can't remember in 3.1).

wow... no points for wmp11?
its clearly much better than itunes and crappy quicktime.
oh it's engadget... nvm

Personally I think WMP11 is equally as dreadful as iTunes/Quicktime.
Although, I feel iTunes does more in a much more clean and easy to use manner, great for noobs!
#5.2 Hurmoth on 03 Nov 2007 - 22:21
I hate WMP, period. iTunes is a lot better IMO!

so ? most if advantages in MACs are from built-in applications...
I would prefer getting raw OS and install tools I like tough.

Good read. However, Vista does have "Task Scheduler" (for the "Automation (user)" section). It's not as powerful as Automator, but Vista does have something comparable.

Also, "Activation" and "System registry" could/should have just been left out.

I've not use Leopard yet, but Tiger and Vista each have their strengths and weaknesses. Thus, keeping score is kind of funny and is used to stir fan boy fights.

I like the side-by-side comparison, although the author was clearly a Mac user. As MacOS and Windows evolve, I'm sure we'll see more of this type of comparison as they're getting to be more like one another in each version.

Still feels that some points are objective. But, then a point of a review was never to be affirmative.
#10 kouhii00 on 03 Nov 2007 - 23:38
why compare the features, just be glad you don't have to fork out more $$ for a feature that comes with the OS
#11 qdave on 04 Nov 2007 - 04:06
hmm, this is too biased.
(1 reply) #12 owensd on 05 Nov 2007 - 00:51
Well... I thought the comparison was ridiculous as it offered no qualification for the ruling (in most cases). Also the fact that it's really comparing Leopard/iLife to Vista, which is a very misleading thing. OS X, out of the box, does NOT have programs like iPhoto and iMovie (true all Macs come with the software installed, it is not a true comparison of operating systems).
#12.1 Antaris on 05 Nov 2007 - 10:13
Engadget have always been a bit Apple-bias, and it wasn't really a concise read at all.
