Microsoft has officially opened the much anticipated and well overdue registration for the new @live.com email addresses. This minor update along with the rest of wave 2 of Microsoft’s Windows Live Suite allows users to now fully take advantage of Windows Live. Microsoft should have opened registration to the @live.com acronym when the company first started Windows Live, but nonetheless this is a welcome change. The company now gives users a change and the ability to get away from the old "Hotmail" acronym and finally puts their email service in-line with the rest of the Windows Live Suite.

Looks like Live is down for now. I was just registering a new @live.com e-mail address and as I completed the signup process the next page said the service is currently down to fix some issues.

I had the same issue, just refresh the page and it'll work. chives@live.com!!

Is Live.com totally different from Hotmail.com?

I checked if my hotmail nickname was available, it is... When netscape mail (i know "who use that?", just bear with me) changed to AOL Mail i kept my old address "myusername@netscape.net" and also had "myusername@aol.com" in the same inbox.

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong option, but seems to me this isn't the case with Live.com
Quote this comment #4.1 Posted by Smigit on 07 Nov 2007 - 02:26
no people need to manually get a new account (or initilise a swap which I thinks possible). Hotmail will remain an active account type. The reason is likely to allow people to actually get accounts that dont contain large strings of numbers and the like which is all but impossible with hotmail nowdays.

Hi ppl,

I have been using Live email, imean @live.com from Jan 2007 when someone put a small hack to make yourself register in Live. Its just like New Hotmail. Although with plethora of new services like Google, Microsoft going to offer through Live (I mean Live Concept) still it is far behind compared to Google or others.

No matter it has got a new look and some new features, but beleive me still gmail and yahoomail are much better than Live.

It's only offering me @hotmail.com

Hmmmm... I tried reloading the page over and over, and it listed @live.com again.

I wonder if its letting only so many in at a time.

Anyway, I couldn't get the names I tried.

here's a tip that works! and i say that cuz it's what i did.

1. open a brand new browser session and go to windowslive.com
2. there should be a text link with a little icon (above the 3 boxes of options) to create a new Windows Live ID.
3. click it, and the new page (after a bounce or two) should bring you to a brand spankin' new sign-up page with "live.com" as one of the options.

enjoy

Something funny just happened

I tried to register using FireFox and it wouldn't show me the option to register my email with live.com

I tried in IE, and it worked.

LOL!

Is Microsoft trying to discourage the use of FireFox by limiting its services to IE users? I know its not possible...but still, I can't think of any other reason that would explain this.

and oh yes, after trying to sign up i get,

We are working to fix a temporary problem with our sign-up service.

Im from nz and seems the only option is @windowslive.net, and its ulgy as! Who would want that for a email, tho ive figured if you change the URL from:

https://signup.live.com/newuser.aspx?mkt=en...rs=04&lic=1
to
https://signup.live.com/newuser.aspx?mkt=en...rs=04&lic=1

it gives me the option, however i get a error when i try sign up

now i dont wanna sound like one of those idiots who begs for things, but if anyone in the US could registar me a @live.com email - coreyf _ at _ live.com, and send me the password, that would be awesome and i would very much apprecite it.

Thanks guys

Windows Live is butt ugly and plain. They take no pride and put no passion in the cosmetic side of web design which is exactly why this brand will not be a phenomenon.

I use Gmail myself, mainly because I don't care if my e-mail looks pretty. Google's whole thing is the minimalist approach, which has its appeal to the neo-tech geek/slacker whatever types. As the biggest software company in the world, I expect way better than the same generic graphical theme we always see. Forgetful names (Live This, Live That) don't help either. I prefer AOL's set of services. They look nice as well as their ability to perform.
