If the rumour isn’t just a rumour, Wal-mart has just proven it isn’t backing HD DVD whatsoever. Here is some information about one of the 4 planned "Secret Sales" for the holiday season. A supposed Wal-mart employee claims that between 8:00am on November 24th and 11:59pm on November 25th, the largest grocery retailer in the United States will be giving away 10 free Blu-ray movies (of your choice but limited to the store and each must be under $30) to every new owner of a $499 80GB PlayStation 3. Walmart is reportedly taking this quite seriously: “For those stores that carry BD already, additional titles are being sent in for the sale. For those that do not have BD in their store (a small minority) product will be sent to each store specifically for this sale. Oh, and you still get your 5 FREE movies by mail.”

in a retail world nothing is "FREE" it's all .01 so yes they can count it as a sale.

Nothing close to that in Canada. Although at least the PS3 80GB is the same price here. IMO still one of the cheapest blu-ray players available here (I would get it just for this if there wasn't a format war going on)
#3 brent3000 on 19 Nov 2007 - 03:21
if ya cant sell em... give them away

Is there many titles under 30 in most retailers? i know theres very few in AUS but im not sure of US prices..

I wonder if you can return the movies after to get refunds on them <.< if you got 10 $30 movies, that would be $300 off the price of the ps3!

Very very doubtful.

Jesus, they really are trying to push BluRay.

"Hey, you brought a PS3, here, have $300 worth of movies for free"

As long as they are still in their wrapping most shops will take them and give you store credit or similar; just say you've lost your reciept!

Wow that's great. If they did that here in New Zealand (hell no), I would definitely get one straight away, just like that.
#5.1 Digix on 19 Nov 2007 - 05:48
bluray is already majority sold HD format here so we don't need to "war" over anything, also we're counted as a minority market so they'll never drop marketing schemes like this here. we've also only got last stock of 60GB and 40GB ps3's no 80GB here. If you want one though just go grab 40GB ps3 its worth it to have it.

I recall a statement in the forums that the HD-DVD camp was desperate when they included x movies. By that logic, this is even more desperate.

Whoopee doo.... Only the retarded or insanely bored watch the same movie more than once or feel the need to "own" a "collection". That's what Blockbusters is for folks!
#13.1 Samboini on 19 Nov 2007 - 10:53
I disagree! I'd like to see how many CD's you have because one could argue you point is just as valid for that media type!
#13.2 _dandy_ on 19 Nov 2007 - 13:52
Try to be more selective. Some movies are worth seeing more than once.

You have not heard the saying "chicks dig a guy with a enormous DVD collection?"

No BOZ?

It's a good deal, you get the PS3 for almost nothing and it's a good kick start for a movie collection.
#14.1 Mathachew on 19 Nov 2007 - 21:17
Since when is $500 is almost nothing?

My guess is most likely using this math formula.

Assume $30 per movie

10 movies in store + 5 mail in rebate = 15 movies.
15 movies x $30 per movie = $450 in movie value

PS3 @ $500 - $450 in movie value = $50 for the PS3.

or almost nothing.

I don't think this is so much to push the BluRay format but rather something to get the hoards of PS3s off the shelves before the end of the year.
#16 Jdawg683 on 19 Nov 2007 - 14:10
If anyone knows me, I'm a pretty big HD DVD supporter. This deal, however, is quite tempting. There's tons of movies on Blu-ray that i'd love to own. Too bad i dont need a PS3, let alone the 80GB model. if this were the 40GB model i'd be all over it.
#17 BigBoy on 19 Nov 2007 - 19:01
"Wal-mart has just proven it isn't backing HD DVD whatsoever"

Childish statement. Please repeat after me:

"Wal-mart backs only those things that help them maximize profit, no matter what they are"

Wow! On November 24th I'm going to go straight to Wal-Mart...

...and throw up in their parking lot!
#20 C_Guy on 20 Nov 2007 - 17:38
Wow that's really sad for Sony. That is very, very desperate.

Then again their PS3 TV commercials aren't going much for sales either.

Didn't Sony get the hint? You lose, pack up and go home. Make more shelf space for Nintendo and Microsoft. They obviously know what they are doing. Nintendo can't keep their Wii in stock anywhere and they didn't have to lower their price or offer free movies.
#21 DJ Specs on 21 Nov 2007 - 06:19
Well, this proves yet again, that the price of these movies are beyond inflated. If they can afford to give 15 movies away, at about $30 each, then it's proof these new formats should be selling for under $10 in the stores.
