I noticed that the Beta 1 for Firefox 3.0 was made available sometime yesterday. I’ve been curious as to whether the Firefox dev team would do a serious revamp for this release or just concentrate on bug fixes and performance improvements. Early indications seem to suggest that it is indeed a major revamp of both the core and the UI, and that Firefox will be a much better browser for it.
I’m not a big Firefox user because I find the memory management to be very poor most of the time and the spiraling memory consumption affects both Firefox’s performance and the overall performance of my systems. I like Firefox but Firefox just doesn’t like me, so, while I have it installed on most systems, I mostly use Internet Explorer 7 and Opera for day to day browsing. Every time I say this I’m faced by a chorus of users telling me that there’s no problem with the way that Firefox handles memory, but this isn’t what I’m seeing. When a browser starts to edge near to consuming 500MB of RAM on a regular basis, something is wrong. Sure, I hammer the browser and have dozens of pages open at a time, but since both IE and Opera can handle this load, I expect Firefox to do so too. So far, it can’t, and because of that the icon doesn’t get clicked on that often.

I will do now
Have you tried the latest build from the nightly directory? there have been a number of bugs corrected after Beta 1 was branched off:

Thanks for the link!
if they clean the core up and optimize the core for the various operating systems it runs on... KUDOS to Mozilla dev.
cause i want decent look (which it already has), SPEED/Functionality/Security (these are #1 in my book)
I'm using the Vista version too and the skin's still very ugly, though.
I think this beta is quite nice on Mac OS X though.
Firefox does like to consume a ton of ram at times, but it's not bothered me so much like it used to. Plus, I'd rather it know my history better and use more ram, than not. I've had to go back many times to closed tabs that I closed and needed again later.
Windows ME had serious issues with memory leaks.... biggest software embarrassment in history. (aside from AOL)
I could say more, but your generalization of "free" software programmers is more than enough to discredit anything you could say from here on out.
and norton's everything

how old are? 12?
but, with all the good things im hearing, i expect them
* Firefox 3.0 Beta 1 is out.
* Firefox has poor memory management compared to IE7 or Opera.
How about... what's new in Firefox 3.0 beta 1? Or how well does it perform? Or anything relating to the subject of "First look at Firefox 3.0 Beta 1" for Christ's sake?

The start time seems to have improved as does the overall browsing speed. I love the UI, gunna have a tinker around with it and see how it goes, so far so good!
Gareth
did the GUI change? or still the same? and are you sure this is a BETA? because it happened before, and it became a pre-beta.
Woody
That's because people sometime post links to their FTP sites and call whatever they like "beta", "alpha" etc when it's really nightlies.
But you can check the link in the story above and make up your mind this time.
me personally as far as i payed attention to it... is i dont think i have seen my firefox go past 100-200MB and i had alot of browser windows open at the time.
but someone mentioned something about browser history using up more memory? ... cause i dont have mine save it at all.

well its subjective to each person, 400mb to you may be a lot but it's nothing to me, firefox could use 2gb and my system would still run fine lol
..but of course I have disabled AdBlock on Neowin
I'll wait til it's released. No biggie

I had that problem too, I fixed it by disabling my Windowblinds custom theme and going back to the default Vista look.
So far this is a huge improvement, takes WAY less time to load, not that I had a problem with FF2 load times, and currently only using ~71 mb
