T-Mobile said Wednesday that it will sell the iPhone in Germany without a contract, complying with a court injunction against it. In addition, it will unlock any phone bought since November 19 -- the date of the ruling -- at no charge, so that the device can be used with other carriers. However, the company has asked the courts to clarify the injunction so it may change its offer to consumers based upon that.
Consumers will gain the option to purchase the device without the two year contract for €999, or about $1,478 USD. In all cases, contract or not, T-Mobile will unlock any iPhone purchased after the ruling. The process is apparently different in Germany than it is here in the US. American consumers may purchase the iPhone sans contract for a flat price of $399, whereas in Germany, consumers are apparently forced to purchase the contract first and the phone second.

I'm sorry, but no matter how nice that touch screen is, it just does not justify the price by a LONG shot.
this is just because they had to and not because they want to and because of that the price is so high. to meet the requirements and still not selling one without the contract really because if the astonomical price.
for the rest i can only say: qft

One side of me says that that is actually a calculated price that Apple consider fair, and what they would have priced it at if they did not need bundle it with a contract - and in which case it is OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive for what it is. An iPod touch costs like €299 or something - where the hell does another €700 come from for mobile phone technology bolted on there?!
The other side of me says (more believeably) that Apple has deliberately put a ridiculous price on it to deter people from buying it, which is an equally loathsome approach to take frankly.
Ugh - why must Apple keep giving me reasons to dislike them!
you could go prepaid...
or you could of cause think that unlimited (i know this is not 100% true, for the speed at least) data and some free mins and texts are then a better deal...
it just adds 300 a year (2yr contract).
and this exactly what T-Mobile wants you to calculate.

Except that the N versions of Windows are exactly the same price as the version with WMP, so not really very much like that at all...
Bloody €999 for a phone.
*cough*
BPN doesn't seem to be watched well...
