Laptops suffer battery, keyboard issues with Leopard

Advertisement (Why?)
Apple's release of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard appears to have brought with it battery drain and intermittent keyboard freezing issues, which are plaguing some MacBook and MacBook Pro owners. Numerous posts in Apple's support forums for both notebooks detail an issue that essentially shuts down the keyboard at random intervals, and affected owners report having to restart or wake their systems if the problem doesn't resolve itself in good time. Trackpads and external keyboards still function normally, however, as noted by AppleInsider.

Users attempting to correct the problem have gone so far as to reset the affected notebook's PRAM (Parameter Random Access Memory) to no avail. Users also say they are still experiencing the problem on freshly-installed Macs, which effectively rules out third-party software as the culprit.

The frozen keyboard issue appears to afflict Apple-branded Intel-based notebook of all ages, with freezes beginning immediately for some or become more frequent over time. The issue persists through Apple's latest Mac OS X 10.5.1 update, and users report experiencing no problems when running Tiger for months prior to their latest upgrade.

Some users suggest that force-quitting Finder temporarily re-activates the keyboard, and one forum poster said he noticed his internal keyboard disappearing from the USB device list in Apple's System Profiler utility whenever the input device was unresponsive.

Battery life issues tied to Leopard release?

There appears to be no quick solution, however, for users encountering shortened battery life on MacBooks converted to Leopard. Some users are reporting on Apple's forums that where Tiger allowed a normal three hours or so of notebook use, they are now down to two or less. "My laptop has become unportable," says a poster in one thread.

Apple does not yet have an official solution for the problem, and has not replied to complaints. It has been suggested by users that the problem may be attributable to taxing new features in Leopard, particularly its enhanced graphical interface. A solution claimed by one user is unrelated, though, and involves fully draining and recharging a battery, and then repeating the process. Many users further say that the draining technique has not worked for them.

Umm no. This is NOT a "new" OS. It's 10.5. If it were new, it would be 11.

Apple works differently to Windows. Mac OS X is a brand of operating system, it's the fifth version of this brand of operating system. Steve Jobs has said before that Mac OS X is the next decades of the Mac OS.

FYI XP was NT 5.1

Oh, so what Mr. Jobs says is the end-all truth?

BTW, I never mentioned ANYTHING about XP being a "new" OS. Did I? Nope, can't say I did. Since you brought it up, what is Vista? 5.2?

There are DirectX 10 games out now? It will soon enough when there is a call for it to be added into WINE. BTW, you can add DX 10 even to XP.

Uh, no. The entire Linux fanbase can call for DirectX to be "added" into WINE all they want but Microsoft's not going to do it. DirectX is what corners the PC gaming market for Microsoft and they'd be idiots to allow it to run someone else's platform. In case you han't noticed, they have a monopoly in that area and nobody's going to stop them.

Oh really? How? I haven't seen real DX 10 on XP and neither have you. Reverse OpenGL wrappers are not a DX 10 API, no matter how much you might want them to be. Wishing doesn't make it so, OK? To do it for real you'd have to either steal the source code or reverse engineer the hell out of DX 10, and in either case Microsoft would sue your ass into oblivion if you posted it publicly. RIP, Alky Project.

After reading the Apple forum postings, I'm very impressed that most of these issues with Leopard have not been brought out in the open more often. Now I have a good source for "fanboyism" rebuttals!

You can bash XP/Vista/MS/Linux all you want, but I've never heard of widespread KEYBOARD FAILURE!!! "Oh dang it! I was right in the middle of doing some boring computer work and my keyboard has stopped. Oh well, thank God I wasn't playing a game or else I'd be REALLY ****ED!"

Next year when i buy a mac, I'll be sure to "downgrade" to Tiger, unless Apple releases a "service pack" for it.

I hope you are kidding here. If you buy a Mac that has had a hardware revision change since Tiger last shipped on it, unfortunately it will not work. Just not sure if you knew that in the 10.X.Y (talking about Y here) they add kernel driver updates in to support new hardware, that is why only a certain minium version of OS X tends to work on the Mac's.

Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah through 10.4 Tiger spotted a Quartz rendered GUI which heavily relies on the Mac's GPU card. This didn't change with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. So how is it possible that the Aqua interface is now suddenly affecting battery life this dramatic?

The new Core Animation API is nothing more than an easier means to create animated GUI elements without using excessive amounts of custom code. It still relies on the same Quartz rendering engine used by Mac OS X since its initial release in 2001 right?

Dont really see the same from the Windows fanboys with this news...

#5.1 Croquant on 26 Nov 2007 - 04:28
That's because Windows Fanboys (a wholly owned subsidiary of Microsoft Inc.) already "know" that Apple makes "overpriced crap that isn't worth buying", so they're not surprised that Leopard (or Leo-tard, as they like to call it) has issues.

Well, that and it's the Turkey Day Weekend, so they're all at home watching football and stuffing their faces. Occasionally some of them wander in here and post their usual "OMFG APPLE SUXORS" nonsense, but then they usually get distracted by something shiny and move on to other stupidity. Like something Xbox based. Once in a while an Apple Macfan and a Windows Fanboy will collide. If that happens proceed in a calm and orderly fashion to the nearest Flame Shelter while the brave men and women of the Neowin Moderation Service risk their sanity and their bandwidth to stop the inevitable Flame War.
:sniff: God bless our Moderator Corps. Let's have a moment of silence for all of them who laid down their fingers to preserve the sanctity of our forums.

Wow, discovering what we've always known since the beginning. When you do a major OS upgrade, there are always problems. So far, I've experienced personally or had to deal with other people's upgrades since Dos 3.0, Windows 3.0, Mac OS 6, various Novell systems, SCO Unix (not that Caldera Cruft, but the real thing) and any number of Linux Variants. Guess what, there's always something. Deal with it.

And also major version changes are best done from scratch (in-place upgrades usually are a recipe for disaster) and usually on a complete new computer system (they always need more memory, drive space and processor performance). Doesn't matter what your OS religion of choice is, progress is costly.

That frozen keyboard thing sounds pretty cool, so far, I've only experienced it as an extreme static electricity problem, usually solvable by unplugging the keyboard so its microprocessor would reset. Neat software feature, Microsoft needs to duplicate it.

Macs are known for 'simplicity' right?

The keyboard thing is obviously just an experimental feature turning on. Keyboards have far too many buttons. They might confuse the user. They're just trying to simplify the experience for you by disabling it.

#8.2 Croquant on 26 Nov 2007 - 04:34
Hey, that was the plan with the one-button Mac-mouse.

Mac users would look at a three-button Windows mouse and their brains just would not be able to handle it. So they'd have to stick with a mac. I mean, you have five fingers. FIVE! How on earth are you supposed to be able to use more than one button on your mouse? It's crazy, I tell you CRAZZZYYY!!!!!

But then some bright spark put another button on a Mac mouse (something that had NEVER EVER been done before, by the way. Naver. Nope. Not at all. Not in the slightest. Well, xdcept for the various time that some Windows hardware mice did it, but they don't count. Becasue the Steve Jobs Reality Distortion Filter* is in effect here) and the rest is history.

*patent pending.

2 hours or less? I laugh at that considering I don't even get an hour in Windows XP with the battery that came with my laptop unless my lid is closed (effectively turning off the screen), in which case I get about 1-1/2 hours. I agree that it does hinder portability though. After all, if you can't use it reliably, there is no point in bringing it with you. +1 for external storage media.

all this does is prove that the more people that own a mac, the more your going to be"hearing" about troubles.
Now that the world has gotten a little taste of a wider mac user base, you're seeing all these little "hiccups" come to life.
There always have been these little "hiccups" in mac's but it was a dirty little cult secret. Protect the name and justify my purchase.

I dont think that is correct, it has nothing to do with user base, but A: a new operating release with a few bugs, or B: some wonky hard ware, or C: other as I bet that if you ask any Neowin user who has a mac has he he/her met with these problems I bet they will say No, I have had none of the problems so far some people are reputed to have.

Ignorance at it's finest. Define "most". By your logic, most people with Vista have no problems... most with no problems with XP. That's why every story or thread on Vista, there's not any users with problems? It's a new OS, some have "wonky hardware", but... there's no issues.

What exactly is "wonky hardware"? Are you admitting that Apple has hardware issues? Say it aint so!

The person above has a very valid point about the more people that buy from Apple, the more problems that you're going to hear about. It must be hard for you to understand, you know... being the distortion field and all.

My MacBook Pro is no longer usable as a laptop. I have it plugged in and am using an external keyboard full time now, which really sucks . For some reason I've had tons of problems with leopard, and thanks to the fact that my Mac is over 90 days old I don't get any phone support.

So, it's not that the Apple fans don't bash Microsoft... It's just that Apple does it enough for most of them on the airwaves under the guise humor.

True.

But the reply would be that you still can't play/tinker with the insides like you can with a generic (in this context, non-mac) PC.

No matter how much you or I don't care - or no longer care - about messing around in a case, and this illusion of "choice" people speak of, the whole argument will still get you nowhere.

Hey, I could certainly go to a Mac fanboy site, where we could all sing the praises of Apple, unhindered. But it's more fun to stick around here, and at least you get the opportunity to get into a fun back-and-forth with people around here who have a sense of humour, like RAID. Croquant is another example.

So just roll with it and have fun. There's always another news story around the corner . . .

Actually, to be fair to the Mac users: they have just as many choices of OSes as the rest of the PC crowd plus their very own OS X. Your sentence made it sound as if Linux distros are made to fail upon installation on Intel-based Macs.

well actually as he did clearly state vista PC, then i assumed he meant OSX computer, i know assuming is bad but you can't even vbegin to compare a slice of apple to a whole orange, if he said mac has more legal OS than windwos then yewah he is partly right they have MAC OS, however i am fairly sure but not positive that if i payed for a license of OSX and i had the right motherboard that supports it, then can i not install it also legally on a PC, in which case the whole comment is still ridiculous

aww..... more problems with Mac..... wait, i thought Mac OS is bug free! whoa! i'm like, totally shocked! :-p These recent stories illustrate just how ignorant the Apple fanbase is by asserting year after year that Mac OS is bug and vulnerability free. Lets face it, the only reason Apple hasn't had as many vulnerabilities found is because no one wants to spend the time finding them.... People who make viruses want to take as many computers down as they can.... cripple the internet backbones, render home users' computers useless, cause a lot of monetary damage, etc..... you can't do that by exploiting Mac OS systems... Things would look different if Mac had the bigger numbers, i guarantee it.

Seriously, is sad to hear all the problems people are getting with Leopard. Let's hope that it's install base doesn't grow to much or it might as well be targeted by virus and spyware makers (i don't know what kind of things can we found if this happens).

All companies have to test better and not rush their products. This is happening with OS's, Apps, Games and almost every Gadget out there.

This all makes for users to start thinking about other choices no matter how cool or appealing the product is. We need that Apple slogan, "It just works" for everything computer-related...

Let's start "I will never switch to Leopard..." topic lol

That's silly. DVD drives don't cook very well. The best way to grill cheese is by putting it between a pair of 2900XT's in Crossfire. That's 450 watts of grilling power.

My sandwich maker got 1200 watts! And it's got 1 button to open the lid which always works, so it beats the Mac. But it's got no battery life at all, so after all the Mac pwnz my sandwich maker. What a sad day :'-(
