C|Net shows no love for Vista yet

Oh dear! It seems that there are no allies at CNet when it comes to Windows Vista. I can only imagine that their IT department is still firmly attached to Windows XP on all their clients (except of course some very poor test machines). Anyway, a bright spark at CNet HQ has clocked Vista in at Nr 10 on their article: Top ten terrible tech products, with the Sony Rootkit fiasco just ahead of Vista at Nr 9. The list even includes the Sinclair C5 as the worst tech product, will Sir Clive ever be forgiven for that?

Do our active members even know what a C5 is?

Heres what CNet have to say about Vista: Any operating system that provokes a campaign for its predecessor's reintroduction deserves to be classed as terrible technology. Any operating system that quietly has a downgrade-to-previous-edition option introduced for PC makers deserves to be classed as terrible technology. Any operating system that takes six years of development but is instantly hated by hordes of PC professionals and enthusiasts deserves to be classed as terrible technology.

Windows Vista conforms to all of the above. Its incompatibility with hardware, its obsessive requirement of human interaction to clear security dialogue box warnings and its abusive use of hated DRM, not to mention its general pointlessness as an upgrade, are just some examples of why this expensive operating system earns the final place in our terrible tech list.

What is incredibly funny about all this is that a great many technology enthusiasts all saw this coming during the development phases. Why didn't MS? It really is quite remarkable.

This can happen if employees of a company are busy in ass-licking and none wants to report bad news to king.

It's okay because I rate C|Net as one of the ten terrible Web review site.

Microsoft probably did not pay them enough, they got mad and now it's vengence.

I can understand why someone would want to stay with XP, it does the job quite well. But I'm running Vista Ultimate X64 before it got released (beta tester) and I've yet to have any problem with it. My PC is powerfull enough to make Vista perform like I want.

Most of Vista problem are not even related to Vista. Bad drivers, bad hardware. The only real thing I hate about Vista is the UAC that pop-up each time you want to do something. Microsoft got crazy stupid with "security" with Vista.

I agree. C|Net is a horrible site and their reviews cannot be trusted.

The funny thing is that people were saying the same thing about XP when it came out.
#2.2 Swordnyx on 27 Nov 2007 - 15:49
hagjhon: I so know what you're saying. I was like 8 when XP came out and my friend's dad would complain about it everyday. Then he got used to it and now he loves XP and hates Vista. I see no point in his arguements...

Yes, for a majority of users, Vista is terrible. And no, it isn't one of the best out there, not by a long shot. That is unless you're impressed by iCandy?

Alright, fine.

But what about the Average Joe?
#4.1 Neobond on 27 Nov 2007 - 11:00
My average Joe friends are in no hurry to upgrade as Windows XP works great on their machine. Generally speaking the average Joe doesnt find the eye candy worth the upgrade and they know little about the under-the-hood improvements.

It's fair to say that its not the step up from Win 98 SE to Win XP that was back then.
#4.2 Foub on 27 Nov 2007 - 11:04
The same feeling.

Vista isn't just "eye candy", there are a lot of under the hood features. Especially in the security department.

This sums up why I'm not upgrading. I couldn't care less about "under the hood features" that I don't really interact with.

The vastly superior security alone is more than enough reason. No amount of third party crap/tweaking can give XP the same level of preventative security Vista has.

I am shocked...shocked I tell you!! Image finding anti-Vista FUD on Neowin.

Will wonders never cease!!
#6 zoonyx on 27 Nov 2007 - 11:42
Vista is pretty much bad
CNet is most definately bad.

I run vista on a work laptop, and XPMCE on my main machine at home. Still too many problems with vista, and XP is a much nicer experience.
#7 hal90001 on 27 Nov 2007 - 11:56
Who cares what CNet thinks, I agree with TruckWEB's comment!
#8 daniel_rh on 27 Nov 2007 - 11:59
Well, I've never liked CNET reviews and opinions, not a surprise...
#9 James123 on 27 Nov 2007 - 12:19
I'm sorry but you can't rate something 7.8/10 (CNET Review) when it was FIRST released and then put it in the "Top ten terrible tech products"

After them having that dual-apple ad on the Vista page and this I'd say CNET has lost the little bit of credibility they had left.
#10 Rudy on 27 Nov 2007 - 12:25
Im one of those who "upgraded" back to XP

people always say that to defend vista.

I remember using a dodgy copy of XP RC1 and it was pretty much as stable as the final version. i seem to remember it was very well received, at least here in the UK.

So the whole "people said the same about XP" line is utter crap

I'm glad you said that because I was starting to think it was my imagination. I keep reading all these "People said the same when XP was released..." and I sit scratching my head. My memory (again, in the UK) was that XP was very well received. In fact, celebrated would be an ideal world. People couldn't wait to get their hands on it because it was so radically different to previous Windows versions. The only real complaint I remember being levied against it was that it was too "childish" looking with its vibrant colour scheme.

It was nothing, and I mean nothing like as damp as the Vista release. Thanks for assuring me that I'm not losing my mind.
#11.3 Angry_Badger on 27 Nov 2007 - 13:37
Absolutely. XP was very well received. I couldnt wait to upgrade. The improvemets it brought to the table from 98 (NTFS, Permissions, Remote desktop, Fast user switching CD burning, built in zip support) far, far out wieghed the compatability issues there were initially.

I was looking forward to Vista but I gave it a good crack for 4 months but couldnt get on with it. I hate the breadcrumb UI, i had strange networking issues (where it claimed there was an IP conflict even though i only had two PC with static IP - manually clearing the arp cache would fix it), performance is a bit of a dog even with a decent pc.

Theres no killer feature that sells Vista. If it doesnt work as well as XP what compelling reason is there to change?
#12 dugbug on 27 Nov 2007 - 12:36
Vista has been great. I don't get the whole XP nonesense.

Critics can't decide if it looks too much like XP or not XP enough.

#13 Croquant on 27 Nov 2007 - 12:53
There's so many reasons not to like Vista I don't know where to begin.

But let's start with what has got to be the number 1 reason: Nobody actually needs to be running Vista. There's no compelling features in Vista and too many downsides to migrating to it that it's just not worth the hassle.
#14 rdmiller on 27 Nov 2007 - 13:03
I'm glad someone else has issues with CNet. In just two years, it has gone from a good source for tech news to the home for all things kiddie-culture. Serious writers have all moved on.
#15 jgrodri on 27 Nov 2007 - 13:22
I think vista is a terrible product in principle (when you consider how long it took to write, what was promised, the expectations, the issues, etc) but as software its not all that bad.
I'm not sure if i make myself clear... it's like its not a huge mess on its own but at the same time they had all the resources to make it sooooo much better that I can't help but to feel disappointed by MS and the work they do.

Terrible. This could be the most poorly written thing to date on Neowin. I am by no means a grammar Nazi, but if something is going to be on the front page, it needs to be better than this.

At a place where unprofessional journalism looks better ?
IMO I kinda like the way it's written, not hard to read, and gets your attention because of how it's written...

What?? A negative article by c|net about Microsoft? OMG I am shocked beyond belief! Thank God they are not at all biased and come off looking like intellectual professionals.

Oh, wait....
#19 Imnotrichey on 27 Nov 2007 - 20:15
My XP computer before service pack 2 (never tried XP before service pack 1) had many more problems compared to Vista now. After Service pack 2, many of those problems did go away. I still have some on Vista but they are minor compared to what I used to experience on XP prior to SP2. Im still hoping SP1 sorts out those problems for me on Vista though
#20 PatrynXX on 28 Nov 2007 - 00:34
Why ME didn't make the list I'll never know. Sticking Vista in that list throws the whole list into unreliability.
#21 Albert on 28 Nov 2007 - 00:55
i can understand cnet's presumed vista hating / fear-mongering obsession - it's all about business, and at the moment, vista bashing is good for business, as it brings in the much needed audiences (ie those stupid and me-too users) to their sites for ad revenues.
