Hackers will feed on Vista in 2008, says McAfee

If there isn't already enough bad news going around about Windows Vista then this takes the cake. According to InfoWorld, Hackers have been ignoring Vista due to its small market share!

"Most of the current malware has ignored Vista," said Craig Schmugar, a threat researcher at McAfee's Avert Lab -- but that's not because the operating system has been frustratingly secure. In fact, Schmugar argued, Vista has been a worthwhile target in the first year of its release.

"These people make their living writing malware or attacking users," he said. "They're driven by financial motivation, and only when market share has an impact will they really work on Vista."

At some point in 2008, Vista will own a tenth of the desktop operating system market, Schmugar predicted. The milestone should mark the beginning of concerted efforts by attackers to root out vulnerabilities in the newer operating system. "Although the huge market share that XP has means [attackers] will still be profitable there for years to come, Vista at 10 percent will put it on their radar," he said.

The same reason Apples aren't attacked then.

(I know loads of Apple fanboys will come along and argue with this fact, but like they say when Vista reaches 10% market share that's when it will start)

I'm not an Apple fan. I've just come here to discuss your opinion.

Your theory does not account for the Linux viruses/worms that have existed, though Linux is a small marketshare. Put that "10%" back wherever you put it. It is just made up, and you know it.

Yes, marketshare makes a platform more lucrative to "hack". But it is not the determining factor.

markjensen: No it is the determining factor. In Linux, everyone is technologically skilled and know how to hack certain things. In OS X, most everyones an idiot (technologically) and have no idea what to do.

Don't forget that Linux and Unix still share a huge market in Servers. So why wouldn't they get hacked? In comparison to *nix and Windows, OSX still has a small overall userbase. And where it is used there is nothing to gain from hacking it. Most attacks are done to get money really.

Hackers will either

A) Hack for a reason ie to break in to get sensitive data etc
B) Cause as much chaos create bot nets etc.

You will prob find that linux and unix fall under category A where are macs dont. There are some (but not many) apple bases servers in comparison to windows and llinux.

If you rlooking at category B which is to exploit to create a nusence spread viruses and obtain personal information then macs (and windows pcs alike) will fall under category B meaning the most market share wins.

So in one year, Vista will have a bigger market share than OS X? That's mad crazy y0!

For reals though, McCrapy is only trying to get people to buy their crapware. As long as retards are on the net... there will be a place for hackers and malware.

um Vista had more market share than Apple within months of its release, hehe.

But you're right. Here's to mcafee going out of business next year instead.

Do hackers have a market-share meter connected to an alarm that tells them WHEN to start hacking on vista?

Don't be silly. They each have a special telephone on their desk. At the right time, each one will receive "the call" giving the code-phrase: "the lettuce is green in November, and ripe for a salad".

At which point, they will each pop their todgers back into their trousers, fire up their VBScript, and cause devastation; the likes of which has not been seen since your shoelace last snapped.

on the other hand, mcafee has been feeding on computer users' fear and worries since the ms-dos days.

i have never believe a freaking thing mcafee said, because that is how they make their money, especially when their market shares started to take a turn for the worst ...

Dear Mcafee,

As if McAfee would say anything else. They make their profits off of Hackers and instilling fear in the public.
#8 rm20010 on 27 Nov 2007 - 20:07
Are they still bitter over PatchGuard?

Who is that?

McAfee or the hackers...
