some independent retailers may have sold them but you could not use all the TiVo Features and to get some of the TiVo Features you would have to hack the TiVo.

but now since TiVo is in Canada I would think you would get all the TiVo Features.

you mean we wont be locked into the substandard boxes that are forced to us by cable co's for dvr/hd? or are these solely to record plain old cable with an ntsc tuner?

I'm not sure as I dont own a TiVo.. you may need to look on TiVo's site to find that Info out.

the site doesnt show much. the most you can get from it is that its a TiVo Series2™ DT DVR with multi room capability. doesnt mention anything about digital cable or HD.

if this is just a simple dvr for regular cable, really, whats the point?

ok I have read the ( http://www.tivo.com/assets/pdfs/Canada-TiVo-Features.pdf ) and it does not support over the air antenna or High-Defintion.

so without support for over the air antenna or High-Defintion TiVo is not going in my home..

I'm not so sure forced is the right word (unless I misinterpreted your comment - it's early), since I can go to any store and pick up a fancy HDD or HDD/DVD recorder.

Do you have to pay any subscription fees for the tivo service? If so I see no point in wasting money on this crap. (website is down so I can't read up on it).

edit - you do have to pay a yearly fee! What the hell is that?! I'll just go buy a recorder from Best Buy etc. thank you very much.

ya, just saw more details. its a dual ntsc tuner it uses.. considering that all analog programming is going away within a few years, the only way this box will work is by plugging a digicable or satellite STB into it.

honestly, what a waste. theyre bringing an out of date tivo box here for us that can record basic analog cable.

what we really need is cablecard support from cableco's (i know its not perfect, but better than nothing) and HD tivos that can be used with them.

i didnt use the word forced, but i think it is the right word to use. if you want digital cable (HD or not) you have no choice about the STB. with no cable card available in canada, we're forced to use the STB that cableco/satco's provide.

these outdated tivos being dumped into canada dont help, unless you want to start chaining a cableco STB with av cables & ir blasters to a tivo and be limited to 1 channel at a time.

Exactly, and it sucks! Why do all our cable/sat companies encrypt their signal anyway? They should force them to send unencrypted QAM channels instead, with an optional STB. Especially since most recent HDTVs support ATSC and QAM anyway, they would work without any STB.

remembering that family guy episode where peter bought a tivo without knowing what it actually does i dont know what a tivo actually does, wasnt ever interested.

good canada gets them now, though.

goot for them, yea. with a human development index of 2 or 1 or what it is atm not having a tivo seems a bit out of perspective.

We have all these features pretty much on Rogers and Bell PVR's and we don't have to pay $12 month, TiVo seems like a waste of money to me. I don't see why it's so big.

To little to late. TiVo does not support Digital Cable, HD Digital Cable or over the air HD.

I'm much better served with my Explorer 8300HD.

what the hell ... TivO is so prehistoric ...

forget that ****, I have an Explorer 8300HD with Videotron.
HDTV + Digital TV + 120Gb HDD for recording and live pausing/resuming etc ...
and a lot more than this ****, no offence but this is pure bs.

I guess Quebecor Media jammed a wrench in their plans for sale in that province.

Why would I ever want a TiVo when my cable company offers a Motorola PVR with a ton more options and HDTV capabilities.

TiVo is like the Pentium 2 of PVRs nowadays.

Too many TiVo alternatives out there so they tried their last chance at a major market. Too late.

Especially with HTPC's nowadays, it's useless.
