Mozilla scrambles to patch Firefox for second time this week

Mozilla Corp. will probably release a Firefox update tomorrow to patch a bug in the just-released 2.0.0.10 version, according to the company's bug database.

If so, it would mark the first time that Mozilla has released two versions of the open-source browser in the same week.

A bug in rendering "canvas" HTML elements worked its way into Firefox 2.0.0.10, the edition Mozilla released Monday to fix six other vulnerabilities. Canvas elements, which were first used by Apple Inc. in its Safari browser, let Web site designers dynamically render bitmap images in HTML. Firefox, Safari and Opera support Canvas natively; Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer does so with a plug-in.

All editions of Firefox 2.0.0.10 -- for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux -- break pages that include the Canvas element, and cripple at least two Firefox extensions, FoxSaver and Fotofox.

I keep having a problem with scrolling on sites, suddenly the scrolling goes weird and instead of scrolling a page it will increase or decrease the pages text size, to fix it i have to close firefox and open it again, really annoying.

You should check your keyboard - make sure there are no stuck control keys.

Hmm, that again sounds like you have "stuck" keys. Not physically "stuck" as in being depressed, but that your computer think they are. Have you tried pressing the left AND right control keys a few times and then trying again?

This may not have anything to do with your actual keyboard, but that Firefox somehow doesn't restore the key states properly.

why are they freaking out over a minor bug?
not complaining though good that there on it
#3.1 Cryton on 30 Nov 2007 - 16:23
Simply because it was a stupid regression that effects a non-trivial number of websites, and it should have been caught before 2.0.0.10 was released.

Updatesssssss. Always welcomed.

Here is something those of you still using MS's os can only wish for, actual updates when needed not updates when MS decides you need it, it would take MS what like 2-3 months to patch the same bug if it was in IE.

IE usually follow the same Patch Tuesday schedule, besides in very rare circumstances (more rare than Mozilla updating the browser when it needs to).

For what it's worth, Microsoft has to make sure their patches don't break anything before they're released to the public. There's alot of testing that has to happen before an update reaches Windows update.

Exactly...

Anyway this is the 2nd time in like a month that they have had to rush an update out after regressions were found after a fix. I'm not sure your comaparrison to MS changes the fact that both 2.0.9 and the soon to be released 2.0.11 were released to fix issues introduced in the previous version. Perhaps they could do with a bit of extra testing before putting these out.

You know, as an INTERNET user I hold a fervent wish that little boy trolls like you (you must be a little boy, otherwise your attitude and immaturity are even more shocking) would all simultaneously suffer massive coronaries, so as to free the resources of our internet just that much more for the rest of us. Take your close-minded elite open-source attitude away from a conversation that you've tried to steer away from the fact that it was an open-source app that needed emergency patching in the first place.

2.0.0.10 also screws with Tab Mix Plus to a degree, and ChromaTabs no long works.

IE7 - Has around 90 Fixes this year and Firefox around 200. Is IE7 more secure than Firefox hmm. Also lets not forget the memory leak issues Firefox suffers from. I find IE7 much more stable than Firefox.

I do use both browsers IE7 (default) for normal surfing and browsing and Firefox 2.0 with an anonymous web surfing and security tunnel enabled. For security sensitive sites.

I downloaded 2.0.0.10 and told the browser to wait until I next restarted... which I haven't yet and now a new patch for it? There should be some way to cancel the patch installation or patch straight to the next one, now I'm going to have to reboot my browser twice... more quality product testing from Firefox... I'm finding it hard to recommend this browser to my friends as I once did.

WOW Firefox Sux!!! It can never update successfully I always have to delete the .exe, and then download the whole file to update. I hate it!!

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you did (and/or are doing) something wrong. I know you hate to hear me say that, but 99.999% of the time the kind problem you describe so eloquently (and I use that term loosely) is the user's fault.

Now, if you would please be so kind as to get your foot out of your mouth so you can take a few deep breaths and calm down, perhaps you could go describe your issue in the relevant forums over at http://www.techsupportforum.com/ where you may actually find a solution to your problem (well, your firefox-related problem, anyway).

If this kind of bug had been spotted in IE, I wonder if Microsoft would be so fast to work on a fix for it?
I'm thinking no.

I'm thinking no.

They don't normally rush out versions that break IE, but when they have, yes, they are quick about it.

Well, I for one appreciate the constant efforts.

Keep up the good work.

I'm starting to get the impression that Mozilla need to improve their testing plans. Bugs in updates aren't uncommon, but 2 'emergency' updates in a month (2.0.0.9 and 2.0.0.11)? That's a bit worrying, especially considering that Firefox is my main browser on all of my computers!
#16.1 +Smigit on 01 Dec 2007 - 17:12
I agree. It's not the end of the world and probably is bad luck, but it certainly isn't a good thing to have happen either.
