A Mac-to-Vista Switcher in Pink

Daniel Fleshbourne   on 03 December 2007 - 13:33 · 122 comments & 43895 views

Advertisement (Why?)
This weekend, my 13 year-old daughter and I set out to replace her first-generation MacBook. She instead picked a pink Sony VAIO running Windows Vista Home Premium. I bought her the MacBook on launch day, May 16, 2006, at one of Apple's two Bethesda, Md., retail stores. The computer came configured with a 2GHz Intel Core Duo processor, 512MB of RAM (which I upgraded to 1GB), 64MB dedicated integrated graphics memory, 60GB hard drive, DVD burner, 802.11b/g wireless and Bluetooth. She does lots of video editing, which was getting increasingly difficult because of the puny hard disk, system RAM and graphics memory.

My daughter also had some interest in Windows Vista, because of certain applications not available for Mac OS X. We went to Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego looking at a new MacBook or a pink VAIO VGN-CR290EAP. The VAIO would mean a switch from the Mac. The mall has Apple and Sony Style stores.

AND a video editor too. Although when I was young I went through several laptops as sort of like hand me downs from my dad's job. I usually had some pretty decent hardware and used it well.

I thought I was the only one who thought this. Personally if I had kids I would never buy them one till 18. They would get a desktop, but no laptop.

My sister (who is also 13) is also on her 2nd laptop, going from a 5 year old dell running XP (a hand-me-down from me) to a brand-spanking new gateway running Vista (bought by my Mom as her xmas present).

Sadly, she isn't into video editing.

64MB dedicated integrated graphics memory

How does this work?

#4.1 +Frazell Thomas on 03 Dec 2007 - 15:29
The integrated graphics card has a small amounr of dedicated RAM (usually between 64 and 256MB) and takes the rest from the system RAM (usually around 128-256MB)

So iMovie is a product used by many professionals? I highly doubt that. Windows Movie Maker is included "free of charge" with Vista Home Premium.

This is false. As of now it seems that the only Windows-only Adobe application is Adobe Onlocation. See this page for system requirements for Adobe Master Collection CS3, which bundles all Adobe products. Scroll down to the Mac OS requirements for the remark that Onlocation is Windows-only, but nothing else. Adobe Premiere Pro is listed there, as is Encore (I presume when you said "Encode" you meant Encore).

maybe the dad wants a new computer, gets the macbook which is insufficient for the girls usage (multimedia editing, video to be exact) and gets a new one, but gives the macbook to her dad.
thats about the same my dad and me did a couple of times... i always "upgraded" to a better computer.

"She does lots of video editing, which was getting increasingly difficult because of the puny hard disk, system RAM and graphics memory"= hard disk upgradeable, RAM upgradeable, graphic's memory unlikely to be a limiting factor.

I think the friend who bought the Macbook off the author for $500 got the best out of this deal and that the biggest reason for the daughter's change in mind is that the Sony came in pink.

Way to go Daniel, didn't think you could lower the bar any further but you proved us wrong...

Quick, someone tell Steve Jobs. We all made fun of those fruity iMacs but apparently having a wide selection of colors is important.

The quality of the posts is in an all-time low and the news posted here are just worse each passing day. I'd hate to have to look for new forums to visit but that is the road this is heading.
Neowin stopped being the same for me the day i saw people begging for a science section yet the vista beta got its own sub-forum without anyone asking.

This is what passes for front-page news these days? Trollbait and useless articles like this? Wow.

A quote from the article:

Quote -
My daughter chose neither. She ended up with the pink VAIO because she liked the laptop's appearance more than the MacBook; she recognized the better value for base hardware; and she didn't see any huge benefit to Leopard over Vista. Operating system was not much of a consideration at all.

And thats the gist of it folks. His daughter chose the laptop cause she likes pink. And then her dad twists her into a 'Mac-to-Vista' switcher, even after admitting the OS wasnt even a factor in her decision. The decision of a 13 year old, no less.

I don't blame the article, the guy felt the need to blog about his 13 yr old daughter while attempting to somehow pathetically turn her actions into an OS vs OS issue, but thats fine. What does bother me is how neowin can choose such a useless article as post-worthy content.
#19 GEIST on 03 Dec 2007 - 16:54
Wow, most pointless OS switcher "review" or whatever you wanna call that ever. So his daughter doesn't dive a damn about either OS and only chose Vista for the pink laptop. That's so very... cute. Sweet little story for his M$ **** buddies. My heart is so melting I'll trash my new MBP and get myself a cute pink Vista VAIO right away.

And Daniel Fleshburne, please **** off. All your wannabe "journalism" and news postings blow harder than a 2 dollar crack whore desperate for her next shot.

#21 richstad on 03 Dec 2007 - 17:12
The article might be fatuous in terms of the credibility of the author. However, he does make a point from a marketing perspective. Current hardware purchasing demographics are showing a higher preponderance of lower age (as in low teens) having more access to parents' disposable income and making the purchasing decision. Also, those purchasing decisions are made on what the purchaser wants to do at that age, and not on what is "cool". There is in fact a far greater rationality in low teens purchasing decisions than in the late teens, as that demographic is far more susceptible to peer pressure and the "cool" factor.

He does not have to give logical reasons. All he did is that he reflected a piece of reality out there. you think that decision (of his daughter) was because of her age? I worked at Best Buy and I know that ~80% of customers think exactly like she did.

Apparently, to the average Joe, that Sony Laptop offered them a bit more than the MacBook. What is that thing offered? exactly. It does not have to be tangible or reasonable but it made her switch.

It isn't her age, its called monopolies and marketing. Appearance and specs are factors of selling something, you may not know it but if your stuck between two things, and you decide on one with no real reason, the reason was because of a factor even if its just the paint used on the computer. Of course most people on here look at specs (I hope they do) and I'm 13 going on 14 and trust me, it isn't age. I planned with my mom for this christmas and my birthday (my birthday is right before christmas) that I want 4 GB of RAM Memory for my birthday and an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 for Christmas, today was my lucky day, the estimated ship date was correct, I just brought my 2 gifts in, they are shipped in one box though. I'm planning on installing these products myself, and I use Windows XP, Vista, Server08, and OSX Leopard. I only have one computer and its a Dell ( ). I hope all of the people who keep saying 13 year olds are so naive now know to remember most people that age are naive but some are smart. And by the way don't blame the poor girl, its her idiot father who blogged this and she didn't know she was on the frontpage news on Neowin.

This article is such BS

(1 reply) #24 +Chrono951 on 03 Dec 2007 - 18:14
The one reason I'll probably never switch to Mac. I can get a better computer with far better specs running Windows for the same price as a Mac. I cannot justify overpaying for a computer with lower specs to get a specific OS. Also, I like games.

However, I will say this. Does OS really have anything to do with the buying decision of most people? I doubt it. A good amount of people buy iPods and MacBooks simply for the name brand. I've asked around my campus, a good majority of the people who have MacBooks don't even know what Leopard is and the only reason they bought their Mac is because they thought it looked neat. Same thing with Windows. Most normal consumers don't know nor care what the difference between XP and Vista is. We get 2 copies of Vista Ultimate for free here, along with 2 copies of XP pro for free, for being students and most people don't take advantage of the offer to upgrade because they don't even know what an OS is.

I'll probably going to get lynched for this, but does the iPod's success have just as much to do with branding as with the actual product. I'm gonna say yes. Think about it, the Zune is a great PMP with almost equal features (some more things as well) to the normal iPods (excluding the touch, that's in a league of its own) and I bet most people will overlook it to get the more well know product this holiday. Not saying that they iPod is bad or anything, but I think people often overlook the idea of product branding and think that because it sells the most, its the best.
#24.1 backdrifter on 03 Dec 2007 - 22:23
I completely agree, but the thing is people really have different priorities which other people have a hard time to understand. Many people see laptops as personal equipment which they can write papers, surf the net and chat, so just like they don't look for features in their cell phones, they don't look for features in their pcs. Being shiny, pink or apple could be enough for them to get it regardless of its feature set. For instance in my faculty people are using 3d modeling applicaitons and when many of them were buying new laptops this year, they learned about the dedicated/shared memory thing. All they were asking the sellers was the amount of dedicated graphics memory of the device. They had no idea about anything else, if a cheap crappy celeron had 256mb dedicated memory, they would've gone for it. So, the point is many people don't have any idea about anything and they just make decisions over rumors, small bits of information and so on. Apple is just taking some advantage over this ignorance and I can't really blame them.

"Every article cannot be compared to 'gold'."

If you think this website needs a 'clean-up', than maybe you should start your own news site. Just like a Mac, could it be because the website looks better than most news sites? Looks nowadays seems to attract higher user base regardless of what it is. The content does not seem to matter.

I enjoy coming here despite what articles are posted, mainly for looks & clean format of the site. Ass kissing? Not likely... Just a simple point of truth.

We already have enough professional journalism from a lot of news media, including MSNBC.

ALL "journalism" is ad driving now, which means it is entertainment/ratings driven. CNN or Neowin, it's all about getting you to generate ad dollars...sigh.

Lets see:

"Windows Vista goes gold"
"A Mac-to-Vista Switcher in Pink"

Do you see the quality between these 2 news titles/articles? I sure as hell do.
Stop trying to be a ass kisser; The mayority of staff and (of course) newsposters are going down in quality. This I do think is part fault of the new members which are getting worse and worse. But staff/admin/etc is getting horrible; I suggested a cleanup YEARS ago and, since it hasnt been done, I was correct in saying this was only going to get worse.

The problem with your logic is that Neowin was accually a good news site with GOOD information. But now it just posts crap like this.

And you use a product because it looks pretty and not its content? Are you like this for everything? Guess you like the tipical blonde, big tits, nice ass, but doesnt even know where Europe is. If so.....the world's IQ population just dropped.

Again quality > quantity > pretty. If you dont understand that, then I have nothign to talk to you about.

Dissappointing reading the whole site really. Its like linking to a Mac vs PC comparison on a site like macrumors.com as the guy is completely Microsoft slanted. I really don't care but some of his articles about Apple stuff are cringeworthy.

http://www.microsoft-watch.com/content/ope...ur_copiers.html

More specifically the comparison table....

Translucency? Apple has been doing it for a long time, way prior to Leopard. Admittedly they somewhat pointlessly made the menu bar translucent in Leopard but.. thats about it.

Photo Desktop - Not sure what this is on about? Not sure what directly competes with Dreamscene...

New start menu / new dock - What is so new about the dock other than stacks and a few functional improvements? Its just an evolution of the product, same as it is in Vista.

Flip3D being compared to Coverflow - they're completely different things. Coverflow is a pictorial representation of directories of files.. Flip3D is a freaking 3D alt+tab replacement.

And so forth.. I don't think I need to point them all out. Most of the technologies either don't compete, some have been in one prior to the other, and some have been in both before. I frankly don't see the point of the article.

Why are people having such a hissy fit about this artical. I really don't get it. Sure its at the top now, but in 2 hours it will be down about 5 or 6 in the list, was I THE ONLY ONE who was actually entertained by this story? Everyone always says vista sucks and switch to apple, but now we have a news story about someone switching FROM apple TO Vista and you guys are still bitching.

Those of you, who would say this artical sucks so bad you are leaving Neowin for good, well all I have to say is , Bye Bye!

Joe Wilcox constantly spews out windows fanboy garbage. His overwhelming ending argument is that a 13 year old girl who likes pink chose a pink laptop over her macbook. End argument. But not quite.

However, then he uses this 'oh so sweet' tale to divulge his bitterness towards Apple's Leopard OS. His previous articles also try to knock Leopard down a peg or two whilst he never shows or supports anything he spews on about. The man is himself pink around the ears and anyone who actually follows this sort of tripe really hasn't got anything better to do with their time either.

Using your 13 year old daughter's colour preference as an example of which OS to choose! Shame on him. Shame.

I think you are missing the point. "Biased" is the right word there. Journalism shouldn't be biased, it should be objective, and relevant. I don't care whatever is in favor of whatever, but "news" or "journalism" like this M$ fan daddy's cute little pink laptop story made up as an OSX vs. Vista thing... you gotta be kidding me. I used to visit Neowin and read real news, stuff that matters, and not that BS fanboy gossip that countless other so called journalistic outlets and blogs post.

So the choice had nothing to do with Leopard vs Vista but rather white vs pink.

You basically summed up the entire article. I was hoping for a remark about ease of use and other features, but the author didn't even say what video editing software his daughter found so much more appealing that existed on Vista and not on the Mac.

In summary, the concerns were that the Macbook's internal HD was too small, and that none of her friends had a pink computer. Aside from seemingly not knowing that external hard drives exist, he also raved about Windows Live Mail over .Mac, which IMO doesn't have much to do with anything.

Of course, the realization that his 13 year old daughter apparently has heavy video editing demands, and is using a laptop as a primary video editing system really trumps all of this. I use my laptop for occasional video editing, but if I needed a system that could handle that as a primary activity, it'd be a ridiculous choice to go for a laptop.

Very disappointing article, although it's generated the most comments I've ever seen.

I took a girl out to buy a new computer and she went right over to the Mac's and said that was what she wanted. The price was $1899.

In the end she went home with a $699 PC which included a 22" monitor.

Neowin has really degraded so much. I'm gonna start to look for some alternative medium to get my tech fix on ... The only thing good about neowin now adays is the weekly podcast and the handful of helpful members who still post and reply to non volatile threads.

If it were a Vista user switching to a mac you'd be drooling at the thought of ripping into Microsoft for something.

It's not even a review.

It's just a "switcher" announcement.

And as for ripping into MS for whatever reason (now we're off-topic) . . . an easy target is an easy target.

This guy's story proves nothing about educated decisions in computer purchasing, especially if he is able to find deals on upgrades. As a owner of both Mac and PC, these are the flaws I noticed:

1)Upgrade the mac to 2GB of RAM and a bigger hard disk. I got a 250GB SATA for about $140 2 weeks ago...Beats $1300 on a laptop.

2)Don't like leopard? Well since you bought a "launch day" macbook, roll back to Tiger with the disc you got with it.

3)144MB shared video max a problem? How much memory do you have left from an OS that needs 1GB to run at all, after your REQUIRED security software sucks down its share? The new video memory (which is still shared btw) just hit the minimum.

4)If this was a Windows XP machine that was purchased it would have been a little more justified, but exactly what video editing software doesn't run on the mac?

5)I have run into driver support problems with Leopard, but exactly what problems did he experience? None that were important enough to list it would seem.

Congratulations, you just dropped $1000 more than a Pink Speck case, 2GB of Ram and a 250GB HDD could have got you.

What I got from the article? His daughter bought the pink laptop. From personal experience I can agree with this as 100% of the time when a teenage girl comes around looking at the cameras that I sell she always wants the piece of crap pink Polaroid camera over a good Nikon or Canon. I tell them that the Canon's and Nikon's will take much better pictures but noooo, "I want really like the pink one." They don't give a crap how the thing performs as long as it looks cool.
