Mozilla Corp. said developers have handed off the second beta of Firefox 3.0 to internal testing, and will ship the next preview of the open-source browser before the end of the year. The tentative release date for Beta 2 has been set for Dec. 21, said Mike Beltzner, Mozilla's interface designer, in a posting to a company blog Monday. "If all goes well during the testing, Firefox 3 Beta 2 will be released on [Dec. 21] in the early afternoon, Pacific Standard Time. You can track our progress on the Firefox 3 Beta 2 Release Checklist," Beltzner said.

Mozilla dropped Beta 1 on users Nov. 20; a day later, Mike Schroepfer, the company's vice president of engineering, said the goal was to get another beta out the door before 2007 ended. On Friday, Mozilla will hold one of its all-comers test days, where it asks for volunteers to run the beta through a series of stress tests.

[sarcasm]Yay![/sarcasm]

I don't mind Firefox so much in Linux, but it sucks the big one in Windows, IMO.

Linux has created a few different distributions of it called Bon Echo or Iceweasel, that are stripped down just enough to NOT be Firefox anyway!! Still prefer Seamonkey or Opera over those also, in Linux.

Bon Echo is a codename used by Mozilla for nightly/pre-release versions of Firefox.

And Iceweasel is the same as Firefox, minus the name and the logo, which are copyrighted and are therefore not deemed 'free'.

Bon Echo was the codename for Firefox 2 pre-releases. Minefield is Firefox 3, etc.

Bon Echo is still being used on the mozilla1.8 Branch nightlies where Firefox 2.0.0.* is being developed on and is also for the Third-party/unofficial builds.

Actually.. Minefield is Not the codename for Firefox 3.0 as Minefield is actually the codename of the Trunk itself and will still be Minefield when Firefox branches off from the Trunk and then releases. The code name for Firefox 3.0 is Gran Paradiso

Current mozilla1.8 Branch nightly: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.12pre) Gecko/20071218 BonEcho/2.0.0.12pre
Current Trunk nightly: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9b3pre) Gecko/2007122004 Minefield/3.0b3pre

w00t, can't wait for version three Hopefully they've managed to make it hog a little less memory. Microsoft are not the only ones to let their release dates slip

I'm with you dude. I went back to IE because I just couldn't stand the memory leak anymore. 3 tabs=500mb. In Maxthon 3tabs=30mb. Hope they fix this issue in FF3, then I will definitely switch back.

That has never happened to me. It can get to maximum of 70mb or so, never more than that.

3 tabs = 500mb? that's just plain bull****

i have 20 tabs to neowin open right now and it's using 104mb

it's rediculous when people like you make false claims like that

Well, it's not rediculous and it's certainly not false. Under certain conditions with certain computer configurations, Firefox uses insane amounts of memory. It also depends on the sites you view. Just because you're not affected doesn't mean the problem doesn't exist!

Wish they would hurry up and go gold. MS can't finish IE 8 until they see what features they are going to need to copy.
