Microsoft Corporation doesn’t just hunt around the top 100 tech websites for each country; Multimap also happens to be one Britain’s, and the world’s, leading online mapping services. It is unclear how much the software giant spent on its latest acquisition, but the company did announce plans to integrate Multimap with its other products and platforms. Apparently, Multimap is a great complement to the services Microsoft already offers. Multimap, which is available both for personal and business use, will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Microsoft, as part of the Virtual Earth and Search teams in the Online Services Group.

"This acquisition will play a significant role in the future growth of our search business and presents a huge opportunity to expand our platform business beyond the U.K. and globally. The addition of Multimap enhances Microsoft’s position as a leading provider of mapping and location platform services. This acquisition will play a significant role in the future growth of our search business and presents a huge opportunity to expand our platform business beyond the U.K. and globally. We are thrilled to welcome Multimap onboard,” said Sharon Baylay, general manager of the Online Services Group at Microsoft.

I don't see what's so great about this website... I really like Windows Live Maps already.

Functionality wise it's very similar to others (Live Maps, Google Maps etc) and in some extents worse. However, it is very popular in the UK; hence, why M$ probably decided to purchase.
