Red Hat Inc. has postponed until January the launch of a new Linux software product for personal computers that would directly compete with Microsoft Corp's Windows operating system. Introduction of the software, which would also compete with Novell Inc's Suse Linux software and would initially be sold in developing countries, had previously been delayed twice. Red Hat Chief Executive Matthew Szulik had said in September that he expected to get the new product on the market by the end of November. Late on Monday, spokeswoman Leigh Day said the company planned to release the software in January, five months after the original target date of August that it had promised customers.

Sold? Isn't Linux suppose to be free? And how will it compete with Vista any differently than so many other distros can already do in features that are free?

I am assuming that you are using the wrong definition of "free", for one thing. Free does not necessarily mean without a cost. Red Hat could be selling their certification and possibly support services.

That said, the article clearly lets you know (if you read all the way to the end), that Red Hat is complying with the GPL and that

Still, it can be freely copied and used anywhere in the world at no charge, Szulik said.
which should meet the Foub definition of "free"

You pay for it because it's Red Hat. Unfortunately (for them) Ubuntu has blown them out of the desktop end

Exactly. I tried Red Hat and I didn't like it much either.

Delayed again? Sounds like they are competing with Microsoft quite well!

On the serious side, the problem (not surprisingly) is patent-related

She said Red Hat was postponing the product's release again because it has yet to resolve problems getting the right to distribute software for playing music and viewing videos with the Linux software.

"that would directly compete with Microsoft Corp's Windows operating system.." ---> lol

Yeah, I find that funny, too. Linux has been much better for me than Windows ever was! Microsoft is no competition at all!

I thought that was good for a chuckle, too. So their new Linux will have tons of games, commercial apps, and and as much hardware support as Windows?

Linux Doesn’t Lack Drivers, it Lacks Complete Drivers

Thanks for the link. Lacking complete drivers means it can't compete with Windows for hardware support since there are complete drivers for thousands of devices for it.

What other OS besides Windows has thousands of games, tons of applications, and more? I don't have any particular love or hate for Microsoft, I just have common sense. Nobody I know will be dumping XP or Vista for whatever Redhat's new product is.

Bickering and nit-picking over pieces of supported hardware on one platform?

Windows: x86
Linux: x86, ppc, sparc, alpha, s390 and more. Oh, plus much of the hardware that is utilized on those platforms.

Now, please, put those Windows e-penises back in your trowsers. The subject is about the delay due to patent issues that could conflict with releasing media playing abilities.

Atari if i remember rightly most if not all where doing what microsoft are doing now before hand so there you have it windows is only now the main contender now because they had a good marketing strategy that was miles ahead of the rest but i assure you the others that where there before did a hell of alot before windows 95

Well if you've already found FreeBSD you're on the good stuff... why downgrade to Linux
