I was very optimistic on Silverlight, I really like how it works and for a few months I played with SDK. But it won't be adopted with majority of people. No one is going to choose it for this reason. Almost every developer know that Flash is in their product's users machines. It would take several years for Silverlight to get the same level as Flash and after that it still doesn't support Linux which already have big market share.
