Facebook opens platform to other social networks

Online social network site Facebook has opened up its developer platform to other social networking sites, with rival site Bebo the first major rival to implement the platform. The move comes in response to criticism that developers wouldn't create applications for Facebook because the website is too "closed" to be an effective market, and sets up a potential clash between Facebook's now open platform and OpenSocial, the open development platform initiative Google Inc. launched in November. Facebook senior platform manager Ami Vora first posted the news in a blog entry on Wednesday.

"(We) want to share the benefits of our work by enabling other social sites to use our platform architecture as a model," he wrote. "In fact, we'll even license the Facebook platform methods and tags to other platforms." Facebook has been steadily growing in popularity since the site became available to all users in 2006, and now ranks as one of the most popular sites on the web. The site claims it has more than 58 million active members, more than seven million of them in Canada. Part of what has spurred the growth was the site's decision earlier to open its platform to developers so they could create unique programs for the site, programs that allow users to share messages, quizzes, photos, or other media.

I wish news sites would stop covering facebook. It's really nothing special. Especially since all those applications are ruining it. I liked it a whole lot more before applications were alowed. Now I get constant annoying application invites. ARGH!

I would have to agree. I just started using facebook a few weeks ago and so far I'm not impressed. Those 3rd party applications make the site look ridiculously childish and amateurish. The invites get annoying as well. No, I do not want to be a vampire...thank you.

+1. I hate them. 95% of them are just plain stoopid.
I started using it just before the applications came out, and I was gone for a few weeks, came home, and found these nice little "applications" plaguing the site. I hate searching through people's 20+ applications to find their wall, lol.

Make sure to remove all third party apps and then go here and select the "Do not share any information about me through the Facebook API" radio box. Click the save button and you will never have to deal with another application invitation.

They need to give you an option to easily block application invites and mark them as spam or choose not to receive application invites at all!

100% agreed, I wonder how this option wasn't implemented from the very beginning.

There are a lot of things about Facebook that don't seem like they're well thought out before they are implemented.

+1!!!!!!111oneone

I HATE those invites. I get them all the time. I use a total of 2 applications (and they're not those stupid useless ones).

So which is better? Myspace or Facebook? I here so much about both...

Facebook if your a university student for sure!!!...
So easy to add/share/tag photos etc, see others status', shared events/calendar service, add new people (you meet as you just need their name), messaging service is really good too....

I find the applications are great. The whole righthand side of my welcome page is full of invites I don't want, it doesn't bother me as I don't look at it, I have email alerts for anything interesting eg new friends, info or event.

You do know you can get rid of the invites on the right-side page by clicking on one, then clicking on Ignore on all of them?

So, does this mean that I can add facebook friends via Bebo and vice versa? Or that I can use Facebook apps on Bebo?

Does this mean anything for non-developers?

I was wondering the same thing.

Other media = stupid useless applications that nag you and send you invites all the time, so that the receiver is constantly annoyed upon login and must therefore cancel them all.
/end rant

Facebook is awesome, but would be a lot better without 3rd party applications or better yet... a way for individual users to disable the presence of all 3rd party applications completely from their Facebook experience; as in from any user profile or page on Facebook universally. Otherwise, it's a wonderful social networking website. MySpace sucked from Day 1. I was and still am stunned and shocked with how popular it is. I guess most people just don't think properly.

You can actually block individual applications on Facebook. I'm not sure how to have Facebook set to block all applications, but in real life, all you really need to do is to block the 10 or so most common applications and you're fine (blocking Top Friends could be a start). But yeah, Facebook really went downhill ever since they created the News Feed and opened the site to everyone (even before the apps were originally introduced), which was by far the biggest privacy violation ever!

Is it me, or have they started using them now?
