An iPhone user by the name of drunknbass has succeeded in turning Apple Incorporated’s smartphone into a video camcorder. The application he has written allows the device to capture 2MP quality videos at 10 FPS for 10 seconds. He has posted (download requires registration) a 36KB proof of concept application, without any UI, that will record 5 seconds of video and replay it – all data is stored to memory. More importantly, he states that the final application will be able to record somewhere from 15 to 30+ FPS and should have an unlimited file length. Yet again a hacker demonstrates the potential of the iPhone’s hardware; Jobs please don’t delay the SDK past February!

This is a step in the right direction until Apple starts up the SDK, although I'm sure video recording will come either through an iPhone update or through this method. Video recording should have been standard from the beginning as well as mms but apart from those two unfortunate gripes it's still the best mobile I have had the pleasure to use. The possibilities that are available with a jailbroken iPhone are what makes it a great mobile and with the release of the SDK it will only get better.

A great mobile phone wouldn't require you to jump through hoops to get an application running on it. And if Apple was going to add video recording they'd have done it already.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but if you want video recording, you're going to have to get another 3 year contract when Apple releases the Iphone 2.

Sorry, here in Canada, if we want any phone for a reduced price (from the carrier) we have to sign a contract. 3 Years is the longest. That's why 3 years popped into my head.

orrrr since development for it is pretty much open game now, and almost all the people I know who own iphones including myself have jailbroken then we can simply wait till someone releases the apps.

you complain about 2 major features not being present but still 'claim' it is the best phone ever, yet then basically say becasue it has been hacked silly is what makes it a good phone. id ratgher a phone that does evertything already.

you assume the SDK is not going to be locked down to ridiculous levels and that anyone can get it, however in realiity it will be given to selected developers adn will be locked down.

when i look at a phones features i go on what it does NOW, not what the possibilities of it are once they update it. any PSP owner will tell you, half the crap the PSP was supposed to be able to do by now, or psp owners wanted it to do just hasnt been released.

I expect Apple will release a "Patch" to "Fix" this "Flaw" and "Lock" it's "Users" away from "using" their overpriced "phones" as camcorders. And then release a version that features video recording... something that no phone has EVER been able to do before. Ever. Never ever.

(For the humor-impaired,: Yes, I'm being sarcastic.)

I think a few of you are missing the point here, I won't bother explaining as I'm having a beer and there's more to life than extolling the virtues of the top product of 2007 but you can't please everyone.

Top product of 2007? Who says that? Britney Spears?

theres more to life, like having the features all other phones have, u cant take a phone, remove half the features add a fancy touch screen make it pretty adn charge ridiculous ammounts for it, then have the nerve to tell me it is the best product. best marketing campaign is about all, because technically it is nowhere near the best

This is really amazing! A phone which can record video? How far have we come? I absolutely need to buy one of those iPhones and experiences features unseen on phones ever before.

I don't get why people make a big fuss about MMS and video recording - I've never recorded a video on my phone and I've never ever sent an MMS. I've only occasionally emailed myself a photo I've taken, but that's about it.

Honestly, no phone yet has video recording that is actually good quality, and MMS? Just send an SMS and email the person the photo if you have to.

Yes, because the world revolves around you and what you do/don't use.

exactly. I've recorded a lot of videos with my sony ericsson. They are not the best quality but they do the job.

I don't know if you have an iPhone... but if you do, then its pretty obvious you havent used MMS or video recording.

Basically you have just admitted that you have a boring and no social life and dont ever go on vacation. Congrads. You are a real winner.

but theres a problem.... see, its still an iphone, its still the biggest heap of crap phone you can waste money on
Quote this comment #10.1 Posted by +tunafish on 16 Dec 2007 - 11:45
i have to agree with you.
It's over priced, battery life is limited, i cant even remove the battery to replace it.
No MMS
Only a 2mb camera?!?!? My N95 has a dam 5mp camera!!! As well as video calling, im sorry but theres nothing Inotive about this iphone. It's soooo 2000

So that's 279, then [£]35*18 [months], for a total of over 900 quid.
For that you could get yourself a Nokia N95 on a 12 month Flext35 contract, with double the included minutes, and unlimited 1.4mbit 3.5G.

What's more, you'd still have enough left to buy an 8GB iPod Nano, and maybe a cheap pc LOL

Why don't you guys just do what Steve Jobbs wants to do in the first place. Go to Apple Corporate headquarters get on your knees allow Steve to ****slap you and then you recieve your iPhone.

Also I love my iPod but the iPhone is ridiculous.

How many of you iPhone bashers have actually used one? It's the UI that puts in it in a class above, not the feature set.
Quote this comment #12.1 Posted by whocares78 on 18 Dec 2007 - 00:56
ive used enough mac crap to know all they carea bout is lookign pretty. features come a distant last, UI is nice, but how easy is it to make a nice UI when you have hardly any features.

there is something called "Benefits Equilibrium" in the technology world. If you have the means to produce a nice and functional UI with a good hardware, why don't you put some effort in the applications and framework so everyone can produce software for it?

the only success it is getting is because the "eye candy" and the marketing campaigns (hats off to apple) that attracts costumers like honey attracts bees...appart from that, there are more complete phones with touch screens that can beat iphone's every function and more...

I perfer HTC Touch and Tilt .. even altough they too have limited battery life.... but I can change it myself.
