The launch of Apple Inc's latest operating system, Leopard, was its best ever, a research group said on Monday. When comparing the first full month of sales of Apple Mac OS 10.5 "Leopard" (November 2007) to the first full month of sales for Mac OS 10.4 "Tiger" (May 2005), dollar volume for Leopard was up 32.8 percent and unit volume up 20.5 percent, NPD Group Inc said in a statement. Apple, maker of the Macintosh computer, the iPod digital music player and the iPhone smartphone, started selling Leopard on October 25, after a four-month delay due to the company's work on the iPhone. The new version of Apple's OS X software costs $129 for a single user and $199 for a "family pack" that can be installed on as many as five computers in a single household.
New features include a file back-up feature called "Time Machine," improvements to e-mail and instant messaging, and the ability to preview documents or files without starting up a separate program, as well as quick access to other computers on a home or an office network. While the increases in dollar and unit volume can partially be attributed to going on sale during November -- a key month for consumer shopping -- and the growth in the number of Apple retail stores, NPD said the figures show that Apple has found the right formula for rolling out new versions of Mac operating systems. Leopard is the sixth version in as many years, a fact the Cupertino, California-based concern is quick to contrast with Microsoft Corp, which went more than five years between new versions of its Windows operating system.

Well, let's be fair, both OS's are buggy to whatever degree. OS X to a much lesser degree at this time, I'll wager. But it's the not-having-any-viruses for OS X that kinda makes the difference. and the UI design . . . and the stability . . . and iLife . . . the list goes on, but you get the picture. The virus issue may change in the future, but we're still waiting. Care to write one? Hell, I'm sure someone out there would even PAY you.

i woudl write one just to annoy you but, the only reason i have is to annoy u, i do not have a mac to tst my code on and welll i aint buyig a 2 or 3 grand machine just so i can write a virus to annoy you. and yeah i doubt anyone would pay

i wouldnt pirate mac for ****, its junk, even if you paid me £50,000,000 to pirate it i still wouldnt. I'm happy on my XP, NT, Memphis and 95 pcs which all run perfectly fine, no problems, haven't been hacked and dont have need a 5Ghz 200 watt hogging CPU, hell my 95 box has a 90w power supply, i bet yours is over 450w, so all in all im getting more for my money and im not being a greddy ******* like you!
You misinterpreted the meaning of the article. It didn't claim the OS was the best ever, but rather Apple's best launching of an OS ever.
I can't imagine computing getting any better than Leopard but we all know that the legendary Apple engineers will create yet another master piece.

It's a universal OS now... one disc fits all type setup. I doubt they will be dropping support anytime soon... since macs pre 2006/7 are ppc. They'd loose a ton of customers in another upgrade if they dropped it... it just wont happen.

Yeah, same here. I'd feel better paying $5,000 for OS X even though it's worth far more than that.

Buy the Vista Ultimate full version OEM CD...it's the same thing, the only difference is that you don't get phone support when something goes wrong...I paid $193usd for mine

Service Pack 2 in XP added a firewall, security center, upgrade to IE6 SP1, plus some other S**t that I can't think of, and allot of behind the scenes improvements.
Though updates to Leopard are more noticeable than XP's was.
Vista on the other hand did have bugs and still has a few. Why, MS rewrote the whole OS, whereas Leopard didn't. You will know when Apple rewrites the whole OS.
I guess when MS screws up people won't let it go, but when Apple does people just slap apple in the hand and say that it's ok and try again...lol
As for Viruses, yes MS has most, but now that Apple has joined the Intel x86 family, and getting more popular, they too will have plenty of viruses in the future. Viruses are writen on the intel x86 platform.
The actual news story however isn't shocking. Considering that Leopard is just a service pack (Mac people can say "upgrade" if they want but the fact is, it's still OS X) and considering how aggressively loyal Apple people are, it only makes sense that there are more sales of 10.5 than 10.4. Most 10.4 users have upgraded and all new systems are 10.5.
It's the most basic math there is.
