Oh wow, Thanks Microsoft! They have just posted a refresh of Windows XP Service Pack 3. So if you are still stuck on XP, by choice or not and you're a tester.. then it's available for download now! This build will be made publicly available soon, but there are 2 points to be aware of troopers!
  1. Even though the update packages are the same as RC Refresh, it is referred to simply as Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate, to avoid confusion for people who have not tried these releases before on a private beta.
  2. There will be a public forum on TechNet to support that release. If you choose to read or participate on that forum, we ask that you continue to observe your NDA regarding schedule, beta releases, bugs you've logged through the private beta program, or other information you have obtained from the beta program.

XP SP3 RC1 is already available publicly

http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/1197391546/1

and the actual link at BetaNews is directly from MS.

As far as I know, this SP3 does not support Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio Bus, and the KB888111 is useless with it.

As far as I know, that is the only RC1 build of XP SP3 available publicly. It would help if the stuff Neowin posted was actually there, ie. there is no updated build on Connect nor is there any announcement of that sort (as far as I can tell) in the beta declaring a build is coming soon nor is there anything else new.

Is that the same build as the one above? i.e 3264? Or is it an earlier build?

That link is an earlier build. Swift33 got ahead of himself.

The one that has been available publicly for awhile now is 3244.

I did not Slimy. That is the build MS posted publicly and I hate to say it again, but, having checked with a few friends in the beta, there is no new build or any mention of that ^ about a new build coming. They could all be wrong and could be missing something very obvious but I'm still a bit skeptical. Of course I'll gladly say I was wrong if/when it is available.

You and I both know that it sometimes takes Microsoft a while to get their servers ready for everyone. If you can't trust Neowin by now, with all the exclusives we have posted, then that's just sad. You did get ahead of yourself because the title says RC refresh and you posted RC1.

How many times do I have to tell you, there is no new build nor any announcement for it. I've been checking with folks I know that are in the beta and there's nothing. This could just be a very limited release that no one but a very few have access to, but if you don't believe me, see the other posts in this thread at the bottom by folks who are apparently in the beta.

I did not get ahead of myself in regards to the download link. The reason? The news post claims it will be labeled as RC to the public. The one at BetaNews, which is public, is indeed labeled that.

What you're saying all comes down to the fact you don't believe it will soon become available. If you don't trust our news, why bother visiting our front page?
That post at fileforum is a week old. We don't post news a week old.

No. What I'm saying is Neowin posted what appears to be a direct copy-paste (since it makes mention of NDA etc.) of an announcement for a new build. However, having checked with folks in the beta, they do not see that announcement anywhere.
#1.11 Swift33 on 18 Dec 2007 - 22:18
Again Slimy, as I said previously I'm more than willing to admit that I'm flat out wrong on this one if it turns out to be true but I nevertheless wanted to point you to the actual news article about the older RC1 download:

http://www.betanews.com/article/Office_200...long/1197392924

where it makes mention of the older RC1 build as being available to the public.

If MS release a newer build to the public and call it RC, then they're doing the exact opposite of trying to avoid confusion since an older build is already available with that label.
#1.12 Swift33 on 18 Dec 2007 - 22:38
Just saw the news post about it over at Bink.nu. Looks like I was wrong on this one however it also looks like this is some sort of private beta as again, checking with friends in the beta, it looks to not be a part of the regular SP3 beta.

While there is a public download available for v3264, the above story is false in that it has not been posted to Connect for download.

Great. I can now use Vmware for something now!
#3 Croquant on 18 Dec 2007 - 19:24
What's the build number?
#4 Swift33 on 18 Dec 2007 - 20:24
As much as I would like to not contradict the news post, I noticed it got slightly changed (the bit about it being available later to testers on Connect got removed) meaning that it should now be available to testers on Connect but it still is not...

"Stuck"?

How about "So if you are still lucky enough to be using XP..."

@Neobond
Why are you laughing?
Windows Vista is a big pile of crap, and the most irritating of Vista is:
When you run windows update:
- 1: it takes HOURS to update
- 2: "installed" updates just come back the next time you check, confirmed by users and most importantly: Microsoft
- 3: goto 1

Fanboi-ism bad, really bad.

1) what? It updates very quickly here
2) Never seen this, only have seen stuff like that in XP a few years ago
3) sounds like you have a messed up install

btw I dont like vista either but never seen those problems

You try (test install and update) EVERYTHING from windows update.
All language packs (2 fail) and the worst crap of all: Dreamscene.

Then you will see how crappy it all is, if i would seriously use Vista, i never install all these updates, only the ones i need. But as test purpose i update and install everything, all extras, all updates just everything.

If you google on it, you will see that more people have these problems, its just PATHETIC Microsoft does nothing about it, and allows it to happen. Anyone can do it, its not like i am special.

I haven't had a problem with DreamScene or the language packs. As neufuse said, you may have a problem with your Windows install (or some malware.)

This supposed new build is not available for me yet either. As much as we love exclusives it helps for them to be factually correct, and this one clearly is not because testers do not yet have access to it.

I'm definitely not "stuck" with XP!
I have tried Vista Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate with the latest SP1 RC, and I couldn't switch back to XP fast enough!!

Build v.3264 still asks for a cd key when you integrate the cd. So much for the keyless install microsoft has been talking about.

Did you try not entering one? Vista asks for a key too, but you can proceed with the text box blank.
#11.2 LargeLarry on 19 Dec 2007 - 15:50
I guess I should have worded that differently. It won't let you install without a cd key. I tried leaving it blank and it won't let me continue without it.

After a long wait installing this i got "Access is denied".
