Mozilla Labs has launched a new project with the aim to explore the blending of the desktop and the Web through deeper integration of the browser with online services. The project, dubbed Weave, will focus on finding ways to enhance the Firefox user experience, increase user control over personal information, and provide new opportunities for developers to build innovative online experiences. “Just like Mozilla enables massive innovation by making Firefox open on many levels, we will aim to do the same with Weave by developing an open extensible framework for services integration,” reads the blog post over at Mozilla Labs.

Humn, this sounds like the .NET Framework plus mabey Silverlight. ::Thrawn looks in to it as he does develop for the web sometimes::

I'm not sure I fully understand what this is, but looking at their graphic it seems like a privacy nightmare. I don't want to send all my passwords and information to some "cloud" to be shared with everyone. Like I said I don't understand what this is exactly so I'm sure there's more to it than that.

I'd rather see better local file integration into Firefox (more explorer like instead of web/text based). I mean its not like we are living in the old days anymore...

This sounds very much like Google Browser Sync for Firefox which synchronizes your passwords, cookies, bookmarks and more across many Firefox installations.

We set a cap to prevent our servers from being overloaded. We'll evaluate tomorrow and maybe open it up a bit more (but no promises). Sorry!

Just to save people some time figuring out what Weave is (because it's not very clear, imo):

Quote - "mozilla labs"
Initial Roadmap
Weave 0.1 (December 21, 2007) - Basic framework and server-side in place for testing and experimentation
- authentication with a single online service provider (e.g. labs.mozilla.com)
- bookmark and history synchronization to the server from multiple clients
- default encryption of all user data with a placeholder algorithm

Weave 0.2 (Early 200 - Initial Web service APIs for developers to build on
- fine grained user controls and ability to delegate (and revoke) access rights to browser metadata
- UI to enable sharing on applicable interfaces
