Sony assures Australians choose Blu-ray this Holiday Season

Any Australian resident 18 years or older who purchases one of twelve Sony Bravia Full HD 1080 LCD Televisions from a participating authorised Austrialian Sony dealer between 9am ADST December 21, 2007 and 11:59pm AEDST January 28, 2008 is entitled to claim (online, see link below) a free 40GB PlayStation 3. That’s $700 worth of console. Of course, they could just use it for gaming, but somehow I don’t think that’s what Sony is pushing for, in the long run. The purchaser should expect up to four weeks of waiting after the claim is accepted before receiving their new entertainment powerhouse. It sure seems like a good deal for both Sony and the customer, what do you think?

Ouch, that's unlucky. I had a similar excperience, just not as bad as yours. I finally succumbed to Sony and bought a 60GB PS3, then 3-4 weeks later, it got a price cut over here by £75 ($150)!
#5 TDQuiksilver on 22 Dec 2007 - 23:04
Awesome! Four weeks really isn't that bad of a wait compared to other "rebate" deals and similar offerings.
#6 BBinder on 22 Dec 2007 - 23:39
in uk if u goto waitrose they had this offer
#7 Julius Caro on 22 Dec 2007 - 23:57
Let's just say that I would buy yet another TV just to have yet another PS3 xD
#8 +Boz on 23 Dec 2007 - 00:20
LOL.. when you can't sell them.. give them away.. hahahah.. j/k...

This is actually great for someone who is in for an HDTV. Bravia TVs are pretty good and free PS3, well it's free and getting a game console for free with hi-def capability is not bad at all. You can't beat free.

I think Yes.

For me it would be a great deal if I had it over here.
I'd get a HDTV, game console, and HD player all in one nice sweep, for the cost of the HDTV I'd be planning for anyway. Yes, a good deal indeed.

It's probably cheaper for me to buy a non-Sony brand HDTV from Circuit City and then buy the PS3 (or Xbox 360 + HDDVD player) myself.
#11 Novaoblivion on 23 Dec 2007 - 01:41
Wow nice deal I wish they did that here when I bought my TV lol.

Given that the cost of Sony Braviia 1080p TV's down here is pretty high anyway, I can't imagine there will be a huge amount of people taking advantage of this offer. Especially when there are other TV's available for less which provide 1080p also and have equal performance

Considering the price gap with Sony's crap you could probably pick up a different brand AND a PS3 and still pay less than the Bravia.
#12.2 +Boz on 23 Dec 2007 - 09:33
Exactly.. actually after looking at some prices I've noticed that NONE of the those Bravias that qualify for a free PS3 deal are cheap. They are all $2000 models and up.. considering you can get $900-$1500 TVs from other brands with HD DVD player for example for less (not to mention the new free HD DVD player with Toshiba TVs ranging from 37" to 50" also in Australia) this SOny deals starts sounding a bit less great.

Here you might want to check this link out if you are in the market for a good HDTV:

time for me to buy a new tv me thinks

Well, when Sony makes such a horrible console they can't sell it, then why not bundle it in with their overpriced TVs so that they don't seem so expensive....
#14.1 Jugalator on 23 Dec 2007 - 19:41
The reason Blu-ray sells so well compared to HD-DVD is because they can sell PS3's without these deals. :-p

This goes to show you how hard-up Sony is to get rid of the PS3. "No NO! Take one. You're going to buy one of our TVs anyway.. might as well take the PS3 and get get a Blew-ray player!"

Yes no?
#15.1 +Xerxes on 23 Dec 2007 - 10:45
Well it's their own fault really, ripping us off (expecting us to pay AUSD$999 for it! which is more then the US/Japan paid for it) what they expect? that it would still fly out the door on the "PlayStation" name alone?!? serves them right, and now they are giving a free PS3 with their over priced HDTVs...Sony will never learn.
#15.2 elvenseven on 23 Dec 2007 - 12:34
, your post would have been a bit more credible if Sony didn't sell 7.7m PS3s.

What he says is true, I can't beleive the amount of PS3's that have been given away, you can get one for free if you sign up for AOL broadband here in the UK, you can't help but wonder, how many PS3's have actually been "sold".

No, it shows how they are smart enough to make timely good deals during the holiday season for people already wondering about switching to HDTV's. A Blu-ray player adds up to the value of a HDTV quite well for obvious reasons. It's not like they're tossing together two unrelated items. There's a nice synergy at work here in the added entertainment value, and this is an excellent idea by Sony. They oviously have the profit margins covered too, or they wouldn't do it.

That's your opinion. I think it's more-less desperation to saturate the market with BD players in order to gain more lead on HD-DVD. That's just what I think. The numbers I've seen still show Xbox 360 ahead of the PS3, with the Wii still pushing ahead.

No. The Playstation 3 is now the number 1 selling console in Australia and New Zealand (in fact, in New Zealand the Wii trails behind the Xbox 360 and the PS3). I don't think Sony is having any trouble selling them

... no problem selling them in TWO countries. Good point.

It's a shame that most of these comments are just a flamewar against Sony. I'm glad they have this offer, I need a new tv but I'm not sure if I want a sony, this may make me get one.

If the offer is expanded to the Netherlands, I will definitely buy a Bravia!

Since the rootkit scandal Sony has been going down and down. I just hope MS to release a new 360 console with the HD-DVD drive built-in keeping the same price and Nintendo to offer Colored Wii's with Mario Kart included so they can kill the PS3 once and forever
#22.1 Jugalator on 23 Dec 2007 - 19:50
Uh, well, you go buy that Xbox with a HD-DVD drive. I don't know why one would want to willingly switch to the format that seems to be struggling in the format war, but that's completely your choice, of course.

Sony "assures" Australians of what? Perhaps it "ensures" they choose Blu-ray, but it will do little to "assure" them of anything. There are few remaining on the internet with a solid command of English vernacular, it seems.
