Starting on Monday, December 24th, at 1 am PST, you can watch Santa Claus fly making his yearly world round trip. Thanks to NORAD and partners Google, AGI, Verizon, Booz Allen Hamilton, Official Santa Mail, GlobeLink, Qwest, Avaya, Plantronics, First Choice Awards & Gifts, Meshbox, E-Frontier, and Santa's Workshop, several hundred of Santa's stops in over 200 countries and territories will be available online. The video footage will be embedded on Google Maps, viewable at the NORAD Tracks Santa YouTube channel. NORAD will also provide a downloadable Santa Tracker file to track several thousand of Santa's stops in Google Earth. Finally, a way to see how Saint Nick pulls it all off in just one night!

You might want to read more than just the headline next time. I'll give you the highlights:

Still, the text of the article makes it sound like Google are wholly responsible for enabling NORAD to do this; when in fact NORAD have done fine without their help for the last 50 years, in one form or another.

All this just to track a fictional character? And using NORAD? Wow....... welcome to america!
#8.1 +Octol on 24 Dec 2007 - 11:23
Hey, we've got a fictional president. You think maybe someone will start tracking him now?
#8.2 Angel Blue01 on 24 Dec 2007 - 13:49
Cheny has his "undislcosed location", although he would probably end up on the naughty list now so he's getting no help from the red guy.

Um this is nothing for NORAD... they track hundreds of thousands of pieces of space junk some smaller then the size of a quarter... they can have some fun too every once and a while... maybe you should try to have some too..

Yah they did do this last year. Though it does make me laugh the fact some people could believe in him, for example if he was true he'd have to travel at 350MPH per second to deliver to every christian household.
#13.1 +stevember on 24 Dec 2007 - 12:51
Its for kids, children ie under 10 or so.

jeeezs.

350 miles per hour, per second? Yeah, that really makes sense, y'know?

Dude, it's just something fun for kids... Quit trying to ruin their fun.

It is nice to see Santa tracking going high tech with Google Earth.

I remember watching the news with the Norad updates when I was younger and they had a hokie cutout of Santa and his reindeer over a map of the world showing where he was.
#16 xSuRgEx on 24 Dec 2007 - 13:51
LoL santa is in Indonesia ATM proberly delivering all those scamed ebay items. LOL j/k

It's quite sad how some of you have lost all sense of fun. Do you remember being a kid?

I was expecting some little google map application with maybe a dot on it where midnight was on the planet, but they've really went all out. IT's got information, videos, little CGI ones of Santa flying past various cities and such...
It's a huge waste of time, but a brilliantly done one. Thank you, Mr American Tax Payer, you've made my day!
#19 LoneWolf3669 on 24 Dec 2007 - 14:55
All you naysayers out there...my 6 year old daughter thinks it's great. Maybe it isn't for you, but to kids, it's fantastic.
#20 musicman on 24 Dec 2007 - 16:45
I think it's great. Kids can watch short videos showing Santa flying around world monuments and can also click spots on the map and follow links to learn more about that area of the world. For those calling this stupid, it's Christmas! Heck, I'm 35 and I'm loving it. This time of year is great.

And to those complaining about tax money being spent for it:

The NORAD Tracks Santa (NTS) program has been around for a long time, since 1955 to be exact! And while NORAD has the "history" and excellent technology to track Santa, NORAD cannot expend government funds on the program. Besides the short time a NTS Project Officer spends "managing" the program, NORAD spends only the minimal amount of funds on NTS.

So, how do we do it? The NTS program is funded through generous contributions from our sponsors. Everything from computer servers, web site design, video imaging, Santa's tracking map, and the toll free telephone number, to the souvenir Santa Tracker buttons volunteers are presented on Christmas Eve, companies, corporations and individual sponsors, or what we like to call Partners, bring this program to children around the world.

I think this is a great idea. Good fun for our children.

But, if you really want headlines here that will start a war of idiots, start it off with "Santa buys a Mac, dumps Vista because of countless BSODs!"

#23.1 webeagle12 on 25 Dec 2007 - 01:34
Nah, better if something like that:

Santa said: Vista suckzorr, XP pwnd.

p.s: looks like he skipped over USA, he saw gas prices.

He sure didn't forget to stop in Iraq.

Santa sucks, I didn't get any presents this year. Thanks a lot Mr. Clause, I hope NORAD really does shoot you down next year.
