Russia launches Final Satellites for its own GPS

Russia has successfully launched a rocket, carrying the last three satellites to complete a navigation system to rival America's GPS, from Baikonur cosmodrome on the steppes of neighbouring Kazakhstan, where Russia rents the facility. The military-run Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) works over most of Russia and is expected to cover the globe by the end of 2009, once all its 24 navigational satellites are operating. Work on GLONASS began in the Soviet Union in the mid-1970s to give its armed forces exact bearings around the world. Officials said the mapping system would mainly be used alongside the U.S. global positioning system, which Washington can switch off for civilian subscribers, as it did during recent military operations in Iraq.

Is it me or this generation of Americans suck at technology (except inventing iPod, apparently that's the only thing we're good at). While everyone else is catching up we’re still stuck in 1970’s.

They all ultimately do; the average westerner would rather spend time learning "business" at university than taking difficult subjects like engineering, medicine etc. because he would sooner hang out with "chicks, beer and rugby!" than doing study. I see it in New Zealand, its pathetic.

Except the first mass-produced digital audio player was created in 1997 by SaeHan Information Systems, which domestically sold its “MPMan” player in the middle of 1998. The South Korean company then licensed the players to Eiger Labs which distributed them to the North American market during the summer of 1998. So, Apple didn't so much invent the iPod as much as they meerly re-invented the MP3 player.

Apple wasn't even the first to make a hard-drive based MP3 player. That was Compaq.

Of course you are missing Ipod 1st and 2nd Generation, specially 1st generation with the "battery" problems.

Along side U.S.A? ha-ha Yeah right! More like we control it, somehow doubt we would have let this happen without a kill switch! So America being behind the times? Um no, we just don't get the credit most of the time, we prefer not to.

Doubt most US Government officials want people knowing we had a hand in this, just more big brother spy propaganda.

It simply means that you can use both GPS and GLONASS in Russia at the same time. There will be navigation devices that will support both systems for maximum coverage.

Japan still does a lot of cool stuff. Their robotics industry is now the best in the world. Then there's this...

Toshiba has developed a new class of micro size Nuclear Reactors that is designed to power individual apartment buildings or city blocks. The new reactor, which is only 20 feet by 6 feet, could change everything for small remote communities, small businesses or even a group of neighbors who are fed up with the power companies and want more control over their energy needs.

http://www.nextenergynews.com/news1/next-e...ear-12.17b.html

Now look at that compared to the lies we hear from US politicians about energy problems. American oil companies and telecom monopolies are major reason for America's decline. Japan, China, Russia, and even parts of "Old Europe" are going to be using next-gen energy sources and have 100Mbit broadband, while Americans will still be debating whether or not global warming exists. It doesn't matter if it exists or not, it's time to get out of the dark ages. Fossil fuels are for barbarians.

So we'll end up with at least three systems? GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo? Wow... But on one hand I can sort of understand it, despite GPS alone being widely available, because it can be changed or regulated in the future by governments outside your control.

Really, thats it? You gotta do better than that.

Russia just accomplished something we accomplished decades ago and there is thread after thread saying how technologically retarded we are. We had this decades ago...hello.

Personally I'm ecstatic about this news and about all the other advances Russia is making again. The best thing for America is competition. We became as strong as we are because of WWII and the cold war, in part because of all the technological breakthroughs that were happening trying to beat our very worthy opponents. So as far as I'm concerned, Go Russia!

GPS in the modern world is something that shouldn't be controlled by one nation, especially when people just seem to take for granted the fact that it does just exist up there.

At least this way, if one system does go down, we can backup to the other one, and vice versa!

Anyone know how accurate this will be in comparison to GPS?
#12.1 TRC on 27 Dec 2007 - 05:49
As long as you have receivers for each, you can't use your GPS reciever with this.

Russia is basically the worst nation in the world when it comes to technology. Everything they own is old and outdated. Look at their crappy planes. They still use Tupolevs, Antonovs, MiGs and other Russian ****...enough said! Everything dirty and old comes from Russia.

Most of Americans here needs to watch their language, because they are just confirming an international point of view on what is modern "American nation" - "nation of retards". After all many of you still asking why the world hate us and bashing us...
