Panasonic has begun shipping samples of the world's thinnest (that’s 9.5 mm to be exact) internal Blu-ray Disc drives to personal computer manufacturers. The new sample 9.5 mm high BD drives were accomplished by combining Panasonic’s own technologies such as the low-profile, 2-lens actuator and spherical aberration compensation mechanism and an optimized optical design for the CD, DVD and Blu-ray disc laser. Even with its thin profile, the new BD drive features double speed reading and writing for both write-once BD-R and rewritable BD-RE discs. All Blu-Ray discs have a maximum reading speed of 2x. Single layer discs are written at 2x while double layer discs have a max writing speed of 1x.

This feature was facilitated through perfecting technologies such as improved light usage efficiency, high-speed recording waveform and broader bandwidth of the light-receiving element. The product will be compatible with future organic pigment-type BDs. The new drive supports reading and writing on four types of BD media: BD-R, BD-RE, BD-R DL, BD-RE DL, and reading of BD-ROMs. In addition, it is capable of reading and writing on seven types of CD/DVD media: DVD-RAM, DVD-R, +R, DVD-RW, +RW, CD-R, CD-RW, and reading of DVD-ROMs and CD-ROMs. The samples will be exhibited at the 2008 International CES, the world's largest consumer electronics show, to be held from January 7, 2008 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in the United States.

I would already own a BD player if I only had a HDTV. It's only $199 for a regular player for the PC now (at 4x speed too) and I find that bearable, especially with the current sweet USD exhcange rates.

Off the topic

It's sad that theres a format war going on yet the actual movies are very expensive meaning I refuse to buy BD's for my PS3. Surly if films were slightly cheaper then this gets more people buying one format effectively killing off the competition?

£4 for Casino Royale on DVD where as its £23 for the BD version

It's too bad they don't have BOGOs in Europe. I got several BDs for $10 each with free shipping from Amazon.

Well, everything in the UK is a rip off. We seem to pay twice as much as every other country. For some reason too people are actually wanting to come and live here...

a few places (amazon, play, hmv) have had buy 2 get one free for a while now, not as good a deal as a bogo but they do them for both formats and include popular movies

Well this is nice and all, but I am a fan of HD DVD.

I'm somewhat confused by the subject: aren't all optical drives the same height? Or do all the current Blu-Ray drives take up two drive bays?
