US Has Become "Endemic Surveillance Society"

Advertisement (Why?)
In a report released by Privacy International, a human rights group formed in 1990 as a watchdog on surveillance and privacy invasions by governments and corporations, the United States has dropped from an "extensive surveillance society" to an "endemic surveillance society," joining the ranks of Singapore, China, Russia, the UK, Malaysia, Thailand, and Taiwan. The report runs over 1,100 pages and includes 6,000 footnotes, with more than 200 experts from around the world providing materials and commentary. Among its findings, Privacy International notes that, in terms of statutory protections and privacy enforcement, the US is the worst ranking country in the democratic world. In terms of overall privacy protection the United States has performed very poorly, being out-ranked by both India and the Philippines. The highest-ranking countries in 2007 are Greece, Romania and Canada, though all three have only middle of the line rankings; on a scale of 1-5, no countries have a score above a 3.

Does privacy actually exist anymore?
#6 kag9000 on 31 Dec 2007 - 19:19
Of course privacy doesn't exist, it never does for serfs and slaves and I guess our respective Governments are just letting us know what they think of us.

The state of Pennsylvania is under arrest then.

This study is a bunch of crap. The category ID and Biometrics is supposed to show if there is a national ID card and if it uses Biometrics. The US gets the worst grade. Hello there is no NATIONAL ID card and since there is not one it cannot use biometrics. Therefore we should get the best score.

me personally, i wish the US gov would be overthrown and have the us citizens take it back to the basic's of the "constitution"! instead of them just "doing whatever they "FEEL" like"
#10 ivanz on 31 Dec 2007 - 20:31
Not surprised. Last time I went there, they had a camera take my picture automatically at the border! I've been to dozens of countries, and have never had such an blatant disrespect for my privacy and rights. I would have asked the border guard if I was under arrest or something, but I was in a hurry...

Ummmm, wrong answer, son. He WAS a producer of Motion Pictures (The Rose, Trading Places).....if you watched the documentary, you would've caught that little nugget. He WAS, as in, he recently passed away.

Son? Anyway, I looked at the bio on his site. It mentions he was Bette Midler's manager, and worked in the music industry a lot. I didn't bother with the movie because I don't base my political views on the opinions of others. It tends to cloud the view.

Even worse (for me):

Yeah, the world is overall in a worse state than their last edition. :-(

Not that I'm surprised... It's saddening to see what Bin Laden accomplished. He couldn't possibly have dreamt of this himself.

difference between USA and China being that in the USA its not a supreme authority watching (for the most part)

most surveillance is done by private business on their own premises

You do know that privacy was never actually a right in America it didn't really exist until quite recently.... The only sort of privacy you had before was in your head. Also, freedom is relative as well. You never had the freedom to do as you pleased....

reguardless if your right or not, i think it's pretty obvious as to what privacy people (the average citizen) should have... like privacy in there own homes so cops or feds etc just cant kick in there door when they "feel like it" etc etc.

people need to get back to the constitution in general!

p.s. another area (even though it's a little off topic) is people with guns nowadays are basically treated like criminals! ... thats a bunch of crap.... i think the society would be better off if they did not have as much gun restrictions as they do now.... sure i dont want a psycho to get guns but overall the people are better off with guns vs without them... cause one of the MAJOR arguments FOR GUNS is... "if you disarmed the average joe from using guns then the only people with guns with be the bad guys"... that reason alone is enough to allow the average joe to own a gun... plus another thing is if people had guns in general ... alot of these school shootings and random acts of violence in public could be prevented or atleast when they do happen the loss of life would be much lower since odds are someone would shoot back at those psycho's and end shootings quicker etc..... on the flip side im sure there would be side effects to having the majority of people having guns like some people might not get shot if they did not have the guns etc etc... but overall i think having guns is better than not having them since u can NEVER get rid of the bad guys from having guns.

Why is the headline targeting the US? The UK, where this privacy group is located, is also listed as Endemic Surveillance, but the UK has a worse rating in many categories on their own chart. Since both countries were Endemic this year as well as last year, wouldn't that mean US hasn't become more anything than their own society? We may be black, but most of the EU has slipped steeply towards that ledge. (Two levels in the France's case! The title should read, "Many Countries are Becoming an 'Endemic Surveillance Society'" :|

That's because UK was actually already listed as one in the last edition. The news here is that the USA has become a state much like it in this latest edition. I don't think many are surprised either, seeing how the world is turning. It's also not just about the US -- other nations have dropped in ratings in this edition too, but I think US was alone in dropping to the lowest level this year. :-/

How about "Rankings Indicate Worsening Privacy Protection Across World"? It's a paraphrasing of the first key finding in the report, and points the finger everywhere where it should.

Yeah, and it will become even more mind boggling to many people who forgot how the world once looked the further we move into the future, it seems.

Remember that there are many levels of privacy too. For example, today people aren't (in general) monitored where they're moving in a city. That's one form of privacy in public. It's not just about CCTV's, if you were thinking of that, although some countries still have quite strict regulations of where a public CCTV can be aimed or placed.

It is not the surveillance society you need to worry about, it is here and will continue to invade our lives. It is the (voluntary) "slave society" that is behind all this. Money is being concentrated in fewer hands, those hands guide governments, and the law. The surveillance society is all about controlling the masses, during a transition.

Slavery was only "abolished" when it became a more expensive system than free enterprise, where people chose to work for a subsistence wage (see any parallels folks?) - forget what the history books tell you they are lies!

The financial system needs a "re-set", George Bush's comments regarding WW3 were not just rhetoric, people will eventually wake up,and fight the New World Order, it will be bloody!
