Happy New Years folks and that means it's time for New Years resolutions. We have some suggested resolutions for the PC Industry that will help them...and us!
#1 To the PC Makers: Stop pre-loading shareware. Nothing is more annoying than getting a new PC loaded with "trial versions" of programs. Just stop it.
#2 To Microsoft: Get Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista out there ASAP and make sure IE 7 doesn't hang anymore for no apparent reason.
#3 To Apple: Get that 3G iPhone out the door sooner rather than later. GPS on it would be nice too.
#4 To the RIAA: Just stop it. I mean, seriously, just stop.
#5 To Jack Thompson: Get a new hobby. Better yet, get a life. In a world in which one can't escape "The Girls Next Door" on TV are video games really a threat?
#6 To Google: Please make a Project Management extension to Google Calendar!
#7 To the BluRay and HD-DVD consortiums, please find a way to work together. You're just slowing down adoption (massively).
#8 To Amazon: Just because you think it might be patentable doesn't mean you should try to patent it.
#9 To Bloggers: This year is the US Presidential Election. Just remember, just because someone doesn't agree with your political opinion doesn't mean they're a bunch of sub-human monsters who eat babies.
#10 To Internet Users: Just remember that there is another person on the other side of that screen. Just because they aren't there to punch you in the nose doesn't mean you should surrender any semblance of civility on-line.
Have a Happy New Year!

Anyway my parents are gonna sue you.
Nice post though, and happy new year everyone.
Bring back poweruser.tv
Nothing is the same without it!!!!
Happy New Year everyone!

it has nothign to do with fear, it is compatibility
i still think the right (posibility) to choose is a better idea. not anybody is an "average joe"... and dont let me confuse you... im using Vista as my main OS.

If you're not "average joe" you shouldn't be buying Dell PCs (laptops sure) you should be building your own.

and that's what i do. i built my own pc. but I am thinking of those who want a cheaper pc.
Uhh, I think I prefer the parent's option with no forcing of specific brands. Fear? What about choice?

Dell still offer reasonable quality for a damned good price sometimes, you just have to catch the right thing at the right time

People can say 720p isnt true HD all they want, fact is, if they have cable or sat, they are not getting true HD to start with... It's always compressed more then if it came OTA on those mediums... so the res is always going to be lower... right now on comcast they are pushing 1080i as well 950i basically to save bandwidth... and sat is doing similar things especially before the new direct tv sat went up... they sent it out in way lower res then 1080i... sure its higher now but still not 1080
And yes. Let's all have a happy new 2008.
#1 and #4 FOR SURE. Wake the f*** UP
BTW: Happy new year and cheers for all of u, from Brazil

also make bluetooth useful for something an dyeah i mean the OBEX profile.
and also mass storage and a file explorer would be nice... itunes is slow... i don't want it in my PC:
AMEN XD
i agree with every single freakin line up there!!! you read my mind.
That would be the actual candidates.
Just curious, can i copy paste this to my blog? and add a link o this page as source? would it be right?
I just have another opinion on the Google thing, really. While that Calendar feature would be nice, I'd first like to see a new revision of their search algorithm to reduce the amount of spam results. That, and a category system for their web search, so you have a few checkboxes on what to show as results... For example: Blogs, News, Shops, Forums, Other. So I can uncheck for example "Shops" if I'm searching for a product name and want reviews and forum feedback. Or uncheck "Blogs" if I want news from just more reputable sources. Now that would be awesome!

For example Symantec pays X manufacturer for each PC they sell with the Norton Trialware - without those little streams it would be practically senseless to manufacture machines.
Whatever, I can just reinstall the OS.
Yeah, and in a sense... Although that's a bit annoying, it's also a good feeling knowing you eradicate all the rubbish on the drive in doing a reformat + reinstall.
Nice idea but they make a lot of money from it so it isn't going to go away any time soon.
#2 To Microsoft: Get Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista out there ASAP and make sure IE 7 doesn't hang anymore for no apparent reason.
I'd rather they get a solid SP1 out there than rush it and IE7 doesn't hang for "no apparent reason" for me...
#3 To Apple: Get that 3G iPhone out the door sooner rather than later. GPS on it would be nice too.
Why is this a "PC industry" new year resolution???
Personal computer, a computer whose original sales price, size, and capabilities make it useful for individuals
Today a personal computer may be a desktop computer, a laptop computer, or a tablet computer. The most common operating systems are Microsoft Windows, Mac OS and Linux, while the most common microprocessors are the x86 and PowerPC CPUs.
--
So in a sense, Mac is a PC as much as anything else. Just that most people are using "IBM x86 compatible personal computers" and equate "PC" to any machine that runs Windows - even if the term PC itself is not brand/hardware dependent.
Trials are annoying for sure, but there are people that return computers to stores because the way they are out of the box they can run slower for some of these people than their old boxes. The software pack-ins in general have just gotten insane.
I wouldn't be surprised if this alone was a reason for the surge in Mac sales, they don't have useless crap installed by default that drags the system down. Dell needs to make the option they offer on a few configurations the deafult for everyone. If Norton really wants a user to use the software then include a trial on a CD in the package.

I think that its way more important that US citizen STOP VOTING FOR A ASSH***, specially if this assh** have nuclear missiles pointing at the rest of the world.
+1
Haliburton makes much more money in a costly ground war. Why would we use nukes?
#12 Stop with the retarded "This is news?" bandwagon. It's old, and 99% of the time it comes from someone who contributes diddly squat to Neowin.
This appears to be forgotten here more and more often.
According to the laws of physics, really fast things can be really massive, such as protons, which in particle accelerators have masses equivalent to that of cars at rest, so saying that something has slowed something else's adoption massively is to say that it is being adopted very fast, which is wrong.

For everyday people, NY Resoultions are a drudge preventing us from having as much fun as possible. How many of your resolutions are fun? These resolutions are akin to asking Sony or MS to lose 50 lbs. As consumer's we'd like to see it as it might make them friendlier and more active in the community, but, if it prevents their business models from working, it ain't going to happen.

Time to have that threesome.
Even if its just Norton that they stop inculding it will make me some what happier
just because .... doesn't mean...
#11 This year I promise to purchase my own copy of an OS as long as it worth it.
Let's add a touch of humility to the situation here, Brad. Shall we add one more to the list??
TO SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS: You DO NOT own the computing world. Just because you hide behind small cubilcle desks and write applications, doesn't mean you should forget where your paycheck comes from. And, to quote Brad:
Keep that in mind when your customers have issues... (yes, as a professional notebook technician, I am fully aware of those calling in you'd rather hang up on than to talk to). And guess what?? Yeah, over 90% of the issues are software related... none of it belongs to the company I work for, yet I'm the one left at the table trying to figure out why it doesn't work. Customers call us because software developers tend to blame those that preinstall it, say it's their problem and that they (software developers) are not responsible for fixing it!!
( isn't there some sort of escape clause written into every EULA, stating that the developers are not responsible for frying your system should you choose to use the software? )
Go figure....
It's a double edged sword!
