Ten New Years Resolutions for the PC Industry

Happy New Years folks and that means it's time for New Years resolutions. We have some suggested resolutions for the PC Industry that will help them...and us!

#1 To the PC Makers: Stop pre-loading shareware. Nothing is more annoying than getting a new PC loaded with "trial versions" of programs. Just stop it.

#2 To Microsoft: Get Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista out there ASAP and make sure IE 7 doesn't hang anymore for no apparent reason.

#3 To Apple: Get that 3G iPhone out the door sooner rather than later. GPS on it would be nice too.

#4 To the RIAA: Just stop it. I mean, seriously, just stop.

#5 To Jack Thompson: Get a new hobby. Better yet, get a life. In a world in which one can't escape "The Girls Next Door" on TV are video games really a threat?

#6 To Google: Please make a Project Management extension to Google Calendar!

#7 To the BluRay and HD-DVD consortiums, please find a way to work together. You're just slowing down adoption (massively).

#8 To Amazon: Just because you think it might be patentable doesn't mean you should try to patent it.

#9 To Bloggers: This year is the US Presidential Election. Just remember, just because someone doesn't agree with your political opinion doesn't mean they're a bunch of sub-human monsters who eat babies.

#10 To Internet Users: Just remember that there is another person on the other side of that screen. Just because they aren't there to punch you in the nose doesn't mean you should surrender any semblance of civility on-line.

Have a Happy New Year!

So how's about them new PUTV episodes Brad? You broke my heart and killed me in 2007. Christmas 2006 my heart was broken when I heard there was no more PUTV. But I was promised 'specials' which gave me the will to live. Then Jan 1 2008 came and i killed myself because there were no specials.

Anyway my parents are gonna sue you.

Nice post though, and happy new year everyone.

add to the #1: let make possible to the final user to select the OS in their machine (lap/desk top).
#8.1 mrmckeb on 02 Jan 2008 - 03:10
No... lets tell the end user to get over their fears and start using Vista. XP is gone and linux is still relatively useless to the average joe.

i still think the right (posibility) to choose is a better idea. not anybody is an "average joe"... and dont let me confuse you... im using Vista as my main OS.

If you're not "average joe" you shouldn't be buying Dell PCs (laptops sure) you should be building your own.

Dell still offer reasonable quality for a damned good price sometimes, you just have to catch the right thing at the right time

and it should also apply to IBM, who patent more things a year than anyone else on the planet.

I think three things stopping HD adoption is TV manufacturers, DVD player manufacturers, and cable companies. They keep selling all these crap models that don't do full high definition (1080p), so most people don't get to watch real high definition, they're stuck with 720p or sometimes even 480p ('cause it's barely-but-still-technically high definition!. If all the TVs out there did all the way up to 1080p, people might see a difference. Then we've got the manufacturers making DVD players that "upscale to HD!" Your average consumer, especially the one not willing to fork out more than 50$ on a disc player, is going to think "well, it does high definition, why the hell should I pay X amount more for that Blu-Ray or HD... whatever crap?" Then there's the cable companies, who offer "HD channels" but don't have enough bandwidth to be able to deliver any real quality. They need to get their act together, stop sending all the channels at once, and start delivering real HD content at a decent bitrate, with nothing below 1080p. To put the cherry on top of all these people still offer the old stuff! TVs that aren't even ED are still being sold, DVD players that barely function are still being sold, and we still have analog television! These people really need to get their act together if they want technology to go anywhere. It's like when Apple was still selling the Mac II well into the 90s.
#12.1 shockz on 02 Jan 2008 - 03:36
They are already working on getting 1080p mainstream... but its a long way off... people still aren't ready for a digital switch over in 2009. It's just not going to happen over night. They simply don't have the bandwidth.

Haha, my family got a DVD-RW set for our CRT SDTV which can up scale to 1080p, for Christmas .
#12.3 vetbangbang023 on 02 Jan 2008 - 18:23
Saying that 720p isn't "real" HD is just silly. It's part of the HD standard just like 1080p.

People can say 720p isnt true HD all they want, fact is, if they have cable or sat, they are not getting true HD to start with... It's always compressed more then if it came OTA on those mediums... so the res is always going to be lower... right now on comcast they are pushing 1080i as well 950i basically to save bandwidth... and sat is doing similar things especially before the new direct tv sat went up... they sent it out in way lower res then 1080i... sure its higher now but still not 1080

LOL Aw Brad, I'm pretty sure atleast one of my angry sub-civilized comments about Windowblinds and Stardock passed your mind when writing that last one.. Dont worry my resolution matches that one too. I'm trying to be a lot more nicer about ...well... everything. Happy New Years and best of luck to you and Stardock, and all your future endeavors.

I agree with 1 - 10 100% of the way.. Nice post. LoL @ 9

Great List (Y).

Just curious, can i copy paste this to my blog? and add a link o this page as source? would it be right?
#27 Jugalator on 02 Jan 2008 - 09:51
Yes, good list!

I just have another opinion on the Google thing, really. While that Calendar feature would be nice, I'd first like to see a new revision of their search algorithm to reduce the amount of spam results. That, and a category system for their web search, so you have a few checkboxes on what to show as results... For example: Blogs, News, Shops, Forums, Other. So I can uncheck for example "Shops" if I'm searching for a product name and want reviews and forum feedback. Or uncheck "Blogs" if I want news from just more reputable sources. Now that would be awesome!

The reason the PC makers "load trialware" into the machines is simply because that's the only way they can gain some profit from the machines - the profits they get from manufacturing and selling these machines is pennies as it is.

For example Symantec pays X manufacturer for each PC they sell with the Norton Trialware - without those little streams it would be practically senseless to manufacture machines.
#28.1 Cidinho on 02 Jan 2008 - 10:51
So they apply a an additional price for putting it all together, and still want to get more money by loading bloatware?

Whatever, I can just reinstall the OS.

Quote - (Cidinho said @ #28.1)

Yeah, and in a sense... Although that's a bit annoying, it's also a good feeling knowing you eradicate all the rubbish on the drive in doing a reformat + reinstall.
#29 Cidinho on 02 Jan 2008 - 10:50
To Mac/Windows fanboys: Stop fanboying your OS. The more people are likely to protect the OS at all costs, the less Apple and Microsoft will work to fix "protected" issues.

#1 To the PC Makers: Stop pre-loading shareware. Nothing is more annoying than getting a new PC loaded with "trial versions" of programs. Just stop it.

Nice idea but they make a lot of money from it so it isn't going to go away any time soon.

#2 To Microsoft: Get Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista out there ASAP and make sure IE 7 doesn't hang anymore for no apparent reason.

I'd rather they get a solid SP1 out there than rush it and IE7 doesn't hang for "no apparent reason" for me...

#3 To Apple: Get that 3G iPhone out the door sooner rather than later. GPS on it would be nice too.

Why is this a "PC industry" new year resolution???
#30.1 daPhoenix on 02 Jan 2008 - 17:52
PC
Personal computer, a computer whose original sales price, size, and capabilities make it useful for individuals

Today a personal computer may be a desktop computer, a laptop computer, or a tablet computer. The most common operating systems are Microsoft Windows, Mac OS and Linux, while the most common microprocessors are the x86 and PowerPC CPUs.

--

So in a sense, Mac is a PC as much as anything else. Just that most people are using "IBM x86 compatible personal computers" and equate "PC" to any machine that runs Windows - even if the term PC itself is not brand/hardware dependent.
#31 Danrarbc on 02 Jan 2008 - 11:51
#1 should be ammended to say don't include any software that makes the computer look bad. That is to say McAfee/Norton that makes computers take forever to boot and do anything, additional desktop search software for no reason when there's one already in Vista, and having everything they possibly can have run on boot run on boot.

Trials are annoying for sure, but there are people that return computers to stores because the way they are out of the box they can run slower for some of these people than their old boxes. The software pack-ins in general have just gotten insane.

I wouldn't be surprised if this alone was a reason for the surge in Mac sales, they don't have useless crap installed by default that drags the system down. Dell needs to make the option they offer on a few configurations the deafult for everyone. If Norton really wants a user to use the software then include a trial on a CD in the package.

According to the laws of physics, really fast things can be really massive, such as protons, which in particle accelerators have masses equivalent to that of cars at rest, so saying that something has slowed something else's adoption massively is to say that it is being adopted very fast, which is wrong.

Indutries have a set model to make as much money as possible so a "resoultion" though great for the consumer might not net them as much money.

For everyday people, NY Resoultions are a drudge preventing us from having as much fun as possible. How many of your resolutions are fun? These resolutions are akin to asking Sony or MS to lose 50 lbs. As consumer's we'd like to see it as it might make them friendlier and more active in the community, but, if it prevents their business models from working, it ain't going to happen.

WHOA NELLY!!!

Let's add a touch of humility to the situation here, Brad. Shall we add one more to the list??

TO SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS: You DO NOT own the computing world. Just because you hide behind small cubilcle desks and write applications, doesn't mean you should forget where your paycheck comes from. And, to quote Brad:

Quote -
Just remember that there is another person on the other side of that screen. Just because they aren't there to punch you in the nose doesn't mean you should surrender any semblance of civility on-line.

Keep that in mind when your customers have issues... (yes, as a professional notebook technician, I am fully aware of those calling in you'd rather hang up on than to talk to). And guess what?? Yeah, over 90% of the issues are software related... none of it belongs to the company I work for, yet I'm the one left at the table trying to figure out why it doesn't work. Customers call us because software developers tend to blame those that preinstall it, say it's their problem and that they (software developers) are not responsible for fixing it!!

( isn't there some sort of escape clause written into every EULA, stating that the developers are not responsible for frying your system should you choose to use the software? )

Go figure....

It's a double edged sword!
#48 Wrezal on 04 Jan 2008 - 12:27
I think number 1 is the most important. I hate all that crap you get on laptops and the such. Why can't they just make it optional, then everyone would be happy
