Advertisement (Why?)
In order to extend its influence, Al-Qaida's media wing, al-Sahab, announced the availability of eight Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahri video messages for cell phones. In a written message introducing the new cell phone videos, al-Zawahri, al-Qaida's number 2 figure, asked followers to spread the terror group's messages: "I asked God for the men of jihadi media to spread the message of Islam and monotheism to the world and spread real awareness to the people of the nations.” Al-Sahab has promised to release more of its previous video messages in cell-phone quality formats. Videos playable on cell phones are increasingly popular in the Middle East, mainly thanks to how easy they can be transferred from phone to phone using Bluetooth or infrared wireless technology.

1: This isn't really technology news.
2: Your just promoting their message my making light of this
3: Even if I am wrong on the first 2 points, this is hardly front page news.

I think this is front page worthy. It shows you how technology can be used to bad ends as well as good ends. It shows that technology is just a tool used by man to accomplish whatever his particular goals are. Something like that is real hard to stop by the governments in the Middle East and security forces.

We don't get reports like this about the latest spam techniques (also about using technology), so why should this be here?
#4.2 macrosslover on 05 Jan 2008 - 22:47
just because it hasn't happened in the past doesn't mean it shouldn't. I personally would be interested to know how spammers get past the latest filters, the tricks they do etc..
It's not my site so I have no control over content past or future I can only comment on what is placed on it, and looking at this I personally feel that it is FP worthy. It's tech, political, and international realted which are elements alot of FP stories usually have. If the name of the subject was replaced by Apple or some tech company nobody would be saying anything, because it's al-aqeda doesn't make it any less newsworthy. In my eyes it's more important than what Apple or some other tech company chooses to come out with.

I agree completely. I have to say I have NO idea where people get their reasoning for this not being Front Page worthy. It involves Technology + Current events. I'm starting to remember why I don't visit these forums for any other reason than design topics.

Of course, but its hardly a new thing; I mean, European powers in the past used it to justify all manner of atrocities.

The problem is that the US decries the extremism of Bin Laden and yet, supports the very regime (Saudi Royal Family) which allows Salafism/Wahhab to exist within its borders, and worse supports the spreading of this intolerant version of Islam outside the kingdom.

I mean, mainstream muslims give me a hard time because I'm a sufi - but when was the last time you saw a Dervish blowing themselves up?
#9.2 Amnesia on 06 Jan 2008 - 08:35
that's really a shame that it happens to you. I'm sunni. We once wanted to show that we're all one family so the sunnis and sheeas all prayed together in the same mosque.

Unless you are completely dumb, please remove this useless news. I don't have to specify what kind of trouble you could get into for propagating this stuff.

I can sum up this up with one word - Treason (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treason)

Get rid of this article now!

I know this is going to cause a storm, but good/bad, is all a point of view, on here, as we are the west, it is bad.
At the other end, this would be classed as a good use of technology.

Oh please, no wonder some are so dumb on current on affairs, when news outlets decide not to actually report, or when they do people ask for it to be pulled.

By reporting a news story, I doubt they can be classed as causing trouble or treason.

how this is treason of propagation of terrorism is beyond my mental capabilities i'm afraid

I did think similar, but I edited as I thought it might cause offence to suggest that.

It seems hard to grasp, but propaganda is a two way street.
#19 Nexx295 on 06 Jan 2008 - 02:02
IMHO, this article doesn't belong on the front page; not even on this site. It's useless for normal people like me, not really about technology, and it's promoting their garbage.

#23 andy2004 on 06 Jan 2008 - 03:44
Its not neowin helping to spread the message. You can hardly say that because there are no links to any videos. Its just a useless , pointless, dis-tasteful non news worthy article that doesnt belong on the front page. Where is the news worthyness of this article ? the dumb idiots calling them selves al crapeda have been using different forms of medium for spewing there nonsense for years now. Also the associated press is no different than the register

#30 evo_spook on 06 Jan 2008 - 14:18
I think this news story is a sad comment on the state of society.

It a news story about an technology being used to further some end. But people want it censored.
Where do you stop? if the govt and news channels censor everything that is decided to delicate, how will you ever know what is going beyond your own small world, how do you know the truth of what is happening.

Its like the Iraq war some years past, sometimes the only way to find out the truth of what was happening was to watch international news outlets, eg the BBC as the American home channels left out anything that was felt too touchy for there viewers.
#31 Lexcyn on 06 Jan 2008 - 16:02

#32 Megalon on 06 Jan 2008 - 16:06
why don't they tell the truth bin laddin had nothing to do with 911 it was a Zionist inside job by the eleet family Rothschild who owns all european countries.
#33 +Dakkaroth on 06 Jan 2008 - 16:34
Propaganda. They know a good population of US citizens don't sit and listen to the news. We carry on with life, as opposed to sitting around hearing about how many crashes, deaths, crimes, etc happened today. This in turn has pushed them to bring the "terror" to your cellphone. Don't buy into this bulls***. The idea of men in caves having some sort of "uncontrollable" movement in your neighborhood is very unlikely.

Don't sell yourself to this idea or any other media controlled garbage. Be educated; don't let them be "educated" for you.
#34 ataris_kid on 07 Jan 2008 - 16:28

There are worst terrorist group INSIDE America (KKK, Black Panthers, a lot of dangerous sects, ultra conservationist and such) but to blame a foreign and exotic group is way more impacting. In comparison, Al Quaida looks like a bunch of gays.

And yes, almost every single group own a webpage, videos and such.
